Chapter 62: Regrets

The result of the initial assessment of the newborn was pleasantly surprising.

“In fact, our genes aren’t the most compatible,” Jiang Miao couldn’t help but say on the way back. “At that time, I was matched with six people, and the one with the highest compatibility was a doctor.”

“Oh?” Yan He glanced at her. “Then why did you choose me?”

“That person was so annoying, he insisted on fighting for custody with me. When I disagreed, he just rejected me outright,” Jiang Miao shrugged. “But it doesn’t matter. I liked you more anyway.”

Yan He remained silent for a moment and asked, “Was it because you liked my face?”

Jiang Miao grinned, “What else could it be?”

In this society, everyone is superficial. “I like your face” is also a straightforward compliment. Most people would be happy to hear it, even saying “thank you” or “I’m honored.”

Jiang Miao thought Yan He would be happy to hear it.

Yan He swiped the screen with his finger, looking at the coefficients. “The carrier benefits have been credited.”

“Wow,” Jiang Miao glanced at it curiously, surprised. “Such a high coefficient?”

Yan He kissed her on the cheek. “Because two people with excellent genes have created an even more excellent child.”

Thinking of Rui Rui’s high evaluation score, Jiang Miao felt happy. Her child had won at the starting line!

Taking off her bag, she said, “You should rest well, and I’ll take care of Rui Rui…”

Before she could finish saying “and take him to my room,” she turned around and found that Yan He had quietly pushed little Rui Rui towards his own room.

Jiang Miao: “…”

“I’ll take care of Rui Rui tonight!” Jiang Miao hurriedly caught up, stopping Yan He. “You should rest well. After all, you had surgery, and even though you’re as tough as nails, you still need rest and recuperation, considering your organs have been moved.”

“The hardness of pure iron can’t compare to my muscle hardness.” Yan He raised an eyebrow.

That was true. Yan He could tense his muscles so much that he could even stop small-caliber bullets! But…

Jiang Miao stopped the baby crib and said, “Yan He, actually, I want… I don’t want our child to be cared for by robots at night. Although the robots at home have already installed parenting modules, but…”

She hesitated for a moment and continued, “You may not believe it, but I started forming long-term memories several years earlier than other children. I can even remember some very early childhood memories. When I was little, the robot came to take care of me at night, leaving me with deep psychological trauma. I don’t want our child to experience all of this. I intend to personally take care of him at least at night.”

It’s okay during the day, at least it won’t be so scary, and robots can assist.

Yan He’s gaze flickered, seemingly both surprised and happy.

“So you also don’t like leaving the child entirely to robots?” he said with relief.

“Huh?” Jiang Miao was surprised. “You too…?”

“Yeah, when we were browsing those parenting experiences online together before, I didn’t like it at all. What’s the point of having caretakers if everything is left to robots?” Yan He sighed. “I’ve been worried that you would also raise the child like that. Turns out you’re not. Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

It’s always the guilty one who’s the first to complain.

Jiang Miao helplessly touched her forehead. “I thought you’d be the kind of person who would leave everything to robots. I wasn’t planning to burden you too much. I was planning to take over only at night after you gave birth.”

“Just like what I thought.” Yan He’s eyes curved up, and he leaned down to peck her rosy lips. “I’m glad we’re on the same page again.”

Jiang Miao also felt an indescribable sense of relaxation and happiness. It’s really great to be with someone whose values align with yours!

“So tonight…” She gently pushed the baby crib, intending to change direction.

However, Yan He stopped her. “The first month was supposed to be my paternity leave. It’s your turn next month.”

He touched Jiang Miao’s face again gently and said, “Don’t worry about it. In terms of physical condition, I’m the last one who needs to be worried about. And don’t worry about the child; I’ll take good care of him. Let him go back to his room to sleep first, and I’ll go cook for you. What do you want to eat tonight?”

Caught in the tender attack, Jiang Miao was completely helpless. It wasn’t until she sat on the sofa for a while that she realized she had sent her newly-born husband, who had only just given birth two hours ago, to cook!

Why does she feel so guilty?

Hesitantly, Jiang Miao shuffled towards the kitchen door.

Yan He was wearing an apron. Although he didn’t have abs now, and his waist was thicker than before, his physique still surpassed that of many ordinary men.

Without a big belly, he was much smoother at cutting vegetables than a few days ago.

There was no sign of weakness or discomfort at all.

Jiang Miao leaned against the door and kept watching, not wanting to do anything else. She just kept watching this man busy in the kitchen, feeling like she could watch him for a lifetime.

Until Yan He turned his head and asked her, “What are you smiling about?”

Jiang Miao said, “It’s like dreaming.”

Yan He was puzzled.

But Jiang Miao didn’t want to explain, just smiling at him. That smile was filled with satisfaction.

Yan He smiled back and gave her a task, “Go check if the baby has wet himself.”

Jiang Miao obeyed and went, carefully checking Jiang Rui’s diaper. Seeing him still sound asleep, the more she looked, the more handsome he seemed. She couldn’t help taking many pictures of his sleeping face.

Happily returning to the living room, Jiang Miao planned to share these photos on her social space, with the caption: “I’m a mom now!”

After arranging the layout and preparing to tap “send,” she suddenly paused.

A mom now…

Should she notify that person?

With the household robot carrying a plate, Yan He followed from the kitchen to the dining room but saw Jiang Miao sitting on the sofa, seemingly lost in thought.

“Dinner’s ready,” he called out.

But Jiang Miao didn’t move.

What’s she so focused on?

Curiously, Yan He walked over, only to find Jiang Miao not doing anything. She was curled up on the sofa, hugging her knees, just staring blankly.

A screen was unfolded in front of her, displaying the photos of Jiang Rui, neatly arranged on her social space, but they hadn’t been sent yet.

Jiang Miao just stared at the screen, seemingly not focused on it, her thoughts wandering elsewhere.

Yan He rarely saw Jiang Miao like this, sensing something amiss, he gently tapped her shoulder. “Jiang Miao?”

Jiang Miao snapped out of it. “What… Oh! Is dinner ready?”

“What are you thinking about?” Yan He asked.

“Just thinking about being a mom now, couldn’t help but feel emotional,” Jiang Miao replied with a smile.

Yan He always saw through Jiang Miao’s lies but never pointed it out.

Everyone has secrets, corners they don’t want to share with others. Even someone as optimistic and cheerful as Jiang Miao.

Yan He didn’t press further.

Jiang Miao didn’t sleep well at night.

She tossed and turned, vaguely hearing the baby cry. It shouldn’t be, her house has good soundproofing. But…

Jiang Miao sat up, barefoot, and ran out of the bedroom.

“Yan He, Yan He,” she whispered softly at Yan He’s door, “Can I come in?”

The bedroom door slid open, and Jiang Miao entered, the room dark. In the darkness, she heard Yan He shushing.

Jiang Miao stopped in her tracks, listening carefully, indeed hearing the sound of swallowing. Jiang Rui was drinking milk.

Jiang Miao tiptoed closer, walking to the bedside in the dark, gradually discerning Yan He’s silhouette.

Yan He was holding Jiang Rui, feeding him milk. Jiang Rui was drinking vigorously. It was hard to imagine such a small body having such strong sucking ability. If Dr. Li were here, he would surely remark, “Truly a child from a high-gravity planet.”

Jiang Miao sat down beside Yan He, leaning closely against him.

Her eyes adjusted to the darkness, able to see clearly. Yan He was smiling at her, his eyes shining like stars in the darkness.

After looking at her for a moment, he leaned in and kissed her nose.

Jiang Miao smiled, resting her head on his shoulder as they both watched and listened to Jiang Rui drink milk eagerly.

The little one finally had enough to drink, no longer crying or fussing. After burping, he quickly fell asleep again.

Yan He gently placed him back in the crib, and Jiang Miao wanted to reach out and pat him, but Yan He turned and hugged her. “Why did you come over?”

Jiang Miao whispered, “I heard Rui crying.”

Yan He didn’t believe her. “I got up after just one cry, and the soundproofing in this house is impossible for it to reach your side.”

“But I really heard it!” Jiang Miao also knew that Yan He was right; the sound wouldn’t reach her side in their house.

“Because you’re a mom, right?” Yan He stroked her hair. “Amazing.”

Jiang Miao also found it amazing.

She rubbed against Yan He’s neck and took a deep breath. “You’re amazing too, you have milk scent now.”

It hadn’t been twenty-four hours yet, but Yan He’s body odor had already changed, unlike before!

Jiang Miao grabbed his collar and sniffed around his neck. “Smells really good!”

It was late at night, making people restless.

Yan He didn’t hesitate to hold the back of Jiang Miao’s head, kissing her lips and savoring them carefully. After a long while, he let go.

Jiang Miao’s breathing was uneven, she struggled a bit and whispered, “I’m going back to sleep.”

But Yan He not only didn’t let go of her, he bent down, lifted her legs, and carried her horizontally back to their bed.

Jiang Miao’s heart raced, her body warmed up.

“Sleep,” Yan He said.

Huh?

Yan He’s hand reached her ear, pinching her earlobe lightly as he chuckled softly. He asked in a low voice, “Your earlobe is so warm. Do you think I want to do something to you?”

Jiang Miao closed her eyes and turned her face to the other side. “How would I know! I thought you were a beast, but turns out you’re not even that.”

Yan He’s kiss landed on that earlobe.

Jiang Miao kept her eyes closed, refusing to open them, not letting him tease her again.

“Go to sleep,” Yan He said. “I know you won’t sleep well if you don’t watch over him yourself. Let’s sleep together in my bed tonight.”

Jiang Miao opened her eyes, sighed slowly, and replied with a “Hmm.” She leaned back, snuggling into Yan He’s arms, pressing close.

Yan He gently stroked her shoulders, softly asking in the quiet of the night, “Why weren’t you happy today?”

Yan He gave birth prematurely today, and Jiang Miao rushed back home. Although she was extremely nervous, seeing him and the baby safe made her feel euphoric.

The hospital’s assessment results were also a source of joy. Even when he was cooking, she stood at the door watching and giggling foolishly.

So, when dinner was served, Jiang Miao sat in the living room with a distracted and melancholy expression, which seemed particularly out of place on this joyous day.

What person or thing could make her, who loved to smile, show such an expression?

Yan He endured it for a night, not wanting to delve into it, letting Jiang Miao have her own little corner. But when he held her in his arms, he felt her fragility.

Yan He wrapped her in his arms, unable to endure seeing her unhappy because of someone or something!
