Chapter 87. Checkpoint

Medical personnel’s work has always been heavy, and in order to make time for their wedding leave, Wei Shi has been busier than ever these days.

Shen Shuman used to complain about his boundless energy, always bothering her.

But now he often comes home late at night, too busy to spend time with her, making her miss the feeling of being held in his arms and doing naughty things.

Even though they live under the same roof, she only has the chance to see him and sit down for breakfast with him when she wakes up early.

At times when she couldn’t see him, she resigned herself to that fact, but even sending him a message required a long wait for his reply.

She wasn’t clingy. Even if he couldn’t be with her, she found ways to entertain herself:

“The sister-in-law called. I heard the phone ringing for a while and answered it, thinking she might be worried about you,” Yu Dai explained, his fingers rapidly typing on the keyboard.

Hospital resources were limited, and most doctors did not have their own desks, sharing office resources instead. Thus, Yu Dai sometimes used Wei Shi’s computer when he couldn’t find an available one.

After pouring himself some water to soothe his throat, Wei Shi warned, “If you dare to mess with my things again, you’ll have to give me the office keys.”

Yu Dai paused, rubbing the stubble on his chin, and thought about shaving later.

He glanced at the photo frame on the desk and cheekily remarked, “Director Wei, you should spend more time with your beautiful newly-wed wife. Aren’t you worried?”

“If I had the time, I would love to spend it with her,” Wei Shi said, his words tinged with a sense of helplessness and nostalgia. He wished to fill the gaps of the years they hadn’t spent together with the rest of his life.

“But how can I have so much free time to always be with her with my busy work schedule?”

Then, shifting the topic, Wei Shi asked, “How do you know she’s beautiful?”

Narrowing his eyes, he resembled a predator ready to pounce on its prey.

Yu Dai shivered, “Isn’t it obvious? Your phone wallpaper and the photo frame on your desk, aren’t they all her pictures?”

Wei Shi flipped the photo frame face down with a snap. Was his affection for her that apparent?

However, Yu Dai’s comment made him think. Neglecting his newlywed wife for so long could make her feel lonely…

No, that wouldn’t do. He set down his enamel mug on the desk, an idea forming in his mind.

Soft Candy: Generally, doctors don’t have private offices, but I’ve made a deposit for you, in case you need it for future mischief.

Wei Shi: Agreed.

Chapter 88:

That afternoon, as the clerk announced, “All rise, please welcome the judicial officers into the courtroom,” Shen Shuman followed behind the presiding judge, slowly making her way to the bench.

Just as she settled into her position, she caught sight of a distinguished figure in the gallery. She blinked in disbelief, not expecting Wei Shi to attend this trial. However, after a brief moment of distraction, she composed herself, sat down with the presiding judge, and quickly focused on her duties, serious about her responsibilities.

Wei Shi sat in the front row, his gaze intensely fixed on her, as if all other sounds faded away, fully absorbed in watching her. Her black tea-colored long curly hair was neatly bundled into a bun at the back of her head, revealing her smooth forehead and giving her a look of dignified maturity.

Wearing a loose black judge’s robe, her delicate face and fair skin were highlighted even more. She sat upright, her face expressionless, revealing no hint of emotion, resembling an emotionless robot.

The trial lasted nearly three hours before concluding.

After the announcement of adjournment, Shen Shuman gave Wei Shi a glance before leaving.

Wei Shi waited for her in the car.

Half an hour later, she changed out of her judge’s robe and emerged from the courthouse in a light blue knee-length dress, getting into the passenger seat.

“Why did you suddenly come?” she asked while buckling up, her lips curving into a smile that she couldn’t suppress, a stark contrast to the emotionless robot on the bench just moments before.

“I wanted to see what you’re like at work,” he replied, engaging the gear and driving off.

“And? What did you think?” she inquired.

“Beautiful. They say a woman who is serious about her work is the most beautiful. That’s certainly true.”

“Flatterer,” Shen Shuman chuckled, looking out at the swiftly passing scenery. “This isn’t the way home. Where are we going?”

“On a date,” he simply said, slowing down at a red light.

“Huh?” She was pleasantly surprised, as this was their first date despite being married for some time.

“However, we can’t go too far. Just a stroll around the neighborhood, grab something to eat… You know, if there’s an emergency at the hospital, I need to be able to get there quickly,” Wei Shi said, feeling somewhat guilty.

Since getting married, he had spent more time at the hospital than at home, and more time with patients than with her.

“As a family member of an outstanding medical worker, I understand,” Shen Shuman didn’t really mind where they went on their date; being with him was enough to make her happy.

Wei Shi smiled at her, “Thank you, Mrs. Wei, for your great support of my work. With a wife like you, what more could I ask for?”

Shen Shuman, feeling shy under his gaze, turned to adjust the car’s air conditioning. “By the way, why did you decide to become a doctor?”

“Hmm,” Wei Shi’s focus returned to driving. “Because my dad is a renowned surgeon.”

“I’ve thought about it. He’s dedicated his life to his work and research. Although he hasn’t won a Nobel Prize yet, who knows, it might happen someday… If I follow in his footsteps, maybe I can bask in some of that glory.”

His choice of profession had been a deliberate decision.

“So, his main task now is to stay healthy until he can see the results of his research and accept an award.”

Shen Shuman had thought he chose to be a doctor to make full use of his intelligence for the welfare of humanity, not to ride on his father’s coattails to get his name on the list of Nobel laureates.

“Wow, you’ve got quite the plan there.”

“And you? Why become a judge?” Wei Shi parked in the underground garage of the Holiday Plaza, leaning in to unbuckle her seatbelt.

As he drew closer, Shen Shuman could see his porcelain-like fair skin up close and smell the faint scent of his masculine hormones. Perhaps it had been too long since they were intimate, but desire fluttered inside her, eager to break free.

“Didn’t you notice? Our workplaces are very close. It’s convenient for commuting, and we save a lot on gas.”

As soon as she finished speaking, she quickly pecked a kiss on his cheek and shyly opened the car door to step out.

Wei Shi, watching her graceful figure and the swaying of her skirt, covered the cheek she had kissed with his hand, his eyes deepening as he pondered how to return the gesture.

Wei Cheng: Spoiled son.

Wei Shi: I hear self-deprecation is in trend now. Dad, you’re quite up-to-date.
