Warm Fuzzies

Chapter 14

These realizations made Zilan’s mind buzz.

The possibility that the little nine-tailed fox might be a medical immortal, demonstrated by her proficient care in changing his bandages and treating wounds, especially such severe injuries, started to dawn on Zilan. Considering his injuries, caused by a dragon’s claws, along with various other wounds all over his body, even a medical immortal in the wolf realm would likely find it challenging and time-consuming to address them all.

Yet, this little fox not only managed to rescue him but also healed his injuries more optimistically and quickly than expected. It indicated that the fox’s medical skills were remarkable, perhaps even surpassing those of the medical immortals in the wolf realm.

The fact that the other owner of this house had gone out suggested that there was a connection between this realm and the outside world. Zilan began to realize that, with the right approach, he might find a way back to the Nine Heavens.

Zilan’s emotions stirred. Despite being physically weak and with faint immortal energy, he hadn’t sensed any aura from the outside world during his time in this realm. Anxiously contemplating what to do next, he suddenly recognized that this realm might have an exit. Although he couldn’t return to the Nine Heavens on his own in his current state, the possibility of leaving this realm lifted a burden from his mind.

With these thoughts, Zilan felt a sense of relief.

He walked over to the simple “nest” that Snow Pear had prepared for him in the large room, slowly lying down and settling in to recuperate.

Though the nest was rudimentary, it surprisingly offered comfort and warmth. The surrounding air was infused with the herbal fragrance similar to that of the little fox.

Her technique was delicate, her movements graceful, and the process of crafting the herbal medicine and employing magical arts was smooth and seamless.

By the time she finished preparing all the spirit medicine, the moon had ascended to its zenith.

With a final yawn, Xueli transformed back into her fox form, drowsily ran back to her own room, jumped onto the bed, and curled up under the thin spring quilt, falling into a comfortable and contented sleep.

…

Thump, thump.

Creak.

The next morning, Snow Pear was awakened by strange noises in the house.

Confused, she emerged from the covers, and upon opening her eyes, she saw a large, clean-furred snow wolf in her home.

“Ahwoo!”

Still groggy from sleep and not yet comprehending why such a massive beast was in her house, Snow Pear was startled. She flew up in a panic, retreating so hastily that she tumbled off the bed. Wrapped in her tail, she rolled around a couple of times before finally waking up.

Oh right, this was the large snow wolf she had been treating for injuries recently. Yesterday, she brought him back from the forest, and for some time ahead, they were supposed to live together.

Xueli was still in a daze, clearly not accustomed to the current situation.

Hearing the noise, Zilan glanced at her.

Originally, Zilan didn’t intend to disturb her, but with injuries on his legs, he couldn’t fully control his movements, causing unintentional sounds as he walked. Now that he saw Xueli was awake, he lowered his ears apologetically.

Apologizing awkwardly, Zilan said, “I… I’m sorry.”

To Xueli, his apology sounded like a wolf’s howl, and she interpreted it as a greeting. So, she patiently responded, “No problem, I forgot I brought you back. The house must be cramped, right? You can go outside for some fresh air. I’ll water the spirit herbs first, and then I’ll bring radishes for you to eat later.”

With that, Xueli hurried over to open the door. She darted outside first, signaling for the snow wolf to follow.

Zilan had already planned to step outside and didn’t hesitate. He immediately followed Xueli out.

The environment within the realm was beautifully clear, and the morning air was especially refreshing. Snow Pear, as usual, swiftly made her way into the courtyard, checking the growth of spirit herbs and then watering them.

These herbs were planted by Xueli and her aunt and were crucial ingredients for making spirit elixirs.

The realm was small, and the intelligent animals were scarce. Everything maintained a rather ancient appearance.

Initially, the spirit flowers and herbs grew randomly, causing inconvenience in harvesting and the risk of running out at crucial moments.

So, Xueli and her aunt spent some effort transplanting the spirit herbs that weren’t too demanding on the growing environment into the courtyard. They collected their seeds and roots and planted them in designated locations.

Not every herb existed naturally in the realm, so whenever her aunt went out, she brought back samples or seeds of various spirit herbs, expanding the variety of medicinal plants. Over time, the collection had become quite substantial.

After carefully tallying the number and growth of the herbs, Xueli turned to the stream to freshen up.

On the other side, after stepping out of the house, Zilan pondered for a moment and then headed towards the kitchen.

Having been gravely injured, Zilan had benefited greatly from Xueli’s meticulous care over the past few days. She not only tended to his wounds but also took the trouble to prepare various radish dishes for him. Zilan felt a sense of guilt but didn’t know how to express it.

Now that he could engage in simple activities, he felt the need to contribute and not just sit idly. Thus, he ran to the kitchen to see if there was anything he could do.

Zilan, of course, couldn’t cook. In the wolf realm, he had plenty of people taking care of him, and being born with a susceptibility to the cold, he was treated like a precious treasure by the wolf king and queen. They were always afraid he might get too cold or fall, so while he received strict training in cultivation, he lacked experience in daily life.

Fortunately, he found radish cakes that Xueli had steamed the day before in a bamboo steamer.

He added some firewood to the stove, heated the cakes, and then clumsily found bowls, plates, and chopsticks to transfer the radish cakes onto a plate.

Maintaining his wolf form for extended periods wasn’t as common in the wolf realm, and he wasn’t as adept as Xueli at using a fox form for various tasks. Moreover, he didn’t currently have the ability to transform back into a human, making things quite challenging.

Fearful that Xueli might not want to eat if he used his mouth, he purposely found a wooden spoon and used it to delicately maneuver the radish cakes onto the plate. It took quite some time, but he finally managed to prepare two servings.

Balancing the edge of the plate in his mouth, Zilan carefully carried it out of the kitchen, intending to place it somewhere visible for Xueli.

He set down one plate with the most delicate movements, placed it on the ground, and then turned to retrieve the second plate

Little did he know that at that moment, he heard the sound of gurgling water nearby. Subconsciously turning his head, he saw Little Nine-Tailed Fox playing in the stream.

The snowy-white Little Nine-Tailed Fox joyfully stood in the water, splashing and hopping around, occasionally rolling and shaking off the water. After thoroughly shaking the water from her fur, she hopped back to the bank and patiently groomed her beautiful nine tails.

Zilan’s face turned red in an instant, and he shyly averted his gaze.

Is this what girls do when grooming themselves?

He felt awkward for watching her groom her tails without permission. Hastily, the embarrassed snow wolf turned back to the kitchen and took the second plate with him.

Meanwhile, Little Nine-Tailed Fox finished grooming her tails and happily returned. However, as soon as she reached the yard, she spotted a plate of radish cakes neatly placed in the center.

Xueli immediately displayed a horrified expression.

Seeing Zilan carefully bringing the second plate of radish cakes from the kitchen, Xulei understood his intentions. She didn’t want to hurt the big snow wolf’s feelings, but she also didn’t want to eat radish cakes.

Xueli swiftly picked up the plate and rushed back into the wooden house. She casually found a clean box to hide the radish cakes, then placed the plate far away. Sitting down beside it, she waited.

So, when Zilan came out with the second plate of radish cakes, he saw that the plate in front of Little Nine-Tailed Fox was already empty. Little Nine-Tailed Fox sat obediently, wagging her tail.

Snow Pear sincerely performed, “Burp.”
