InterStellar Dad

Chapter 24: Agreement

Everyone living in this world will have at least two faces.

Take Dr. Jiang Miao, for example. It’s been a long time since she had any intimate encounters with a real man, yet in the company, she still pretends to go with the flow, acting like “I had a great date with a guy yesterday.”

In their initial encounter, Major Yan He appeared to be a stern and serious person. After living together for three or four days, seeing each other in comfortable home clothes, slippers, eating at a table, chatting on a sofa, he finally took off that diplomatic face, revealing a more private and casual side.

It was then that Jiang Miao discovered that Major Yan He was actually a person who loved to smile.

Especially for someone like Jiang Miao, who excelled in research and was determined to follow Major Yan He’s training plan, he didn’t hesitate to give compliments.

“Last three, three, two, one.” He stood next to the mat, arms crossed, personally supervising. “Very good, we’ll stop here for today.”

With a thud, Jiang Miao collapsed on the mat like a dead dog, drenched in sweat, as if she had been soaked in water.

Yan He squatted down, “Are you okay?”

“Eh, Eh? How did you know?” Jiang Miao, like a dead dog, got up.

“People who can cook have a talent for knowing what others like to eat at a glance.” Yan He said seriously as he stood up, “Hurry up and wash, I’ll get some vegetables.”

“Wow, impressive… Wait!” Dr. Jiang suddenly realized and loudly questioned Yan He’s back, “Did you tamper with the statistics of my cooking machine?”

Outside the door came Yan He’s muffled laughter.

Jiang Miao gritted her teeth.

After taking a shower and coming to the dining table, she was surprised, “Did you buy ceramics?”

The bowls and plates on the table were not the biodegradable disposable ones Jiang Miao usually used; they were an exquisite set of ceramics she had never seen before.

“Exquisitely prepared food deserves exquisite tableware.” Yan He opened a beer, “Actually, I’m a bit curious. You’ve prepared a complete set of cooking tools, why not tableware?”

“Uh, it’s not me who cooks.” Jiang Miao scratched her face, “I thought if she came, she might like to choose her own tableware; she has a high taste.”

Yan He raised an eyebrow while holding his cup, “You’re considerate of her.”

Jiang Miao hesitated for a moment and then asked, “What is your caregiver like?”

“I was raised by my father, who is also a military man. To raise me, he applied for a transfer to a ground service unit for a few years. He returned to the front line only when I graduated from elementary school and started boarding at a military school.” Yan He said calmly.

“Ah? Is that okay?” Jiang Miao was surprised, “For ordinary people, wouldn’t that be equivalent to giving up custody rights?”

“But we are not ordinary people; we are military personnel.” Yan He said, “The policy for military personnel regarding parenting is different from that of civilians. The government encourages and supports military personnel to be caregivers. Children raised by military personnel are required to enter military schools instead of regular schools in junior high. When they grow up, most of them become military personnel.”

Jiang Miao thought for a moment and frowned, “Is it for…?” Is it what she thought?

Yan He saw her expression and knew she understood, nodding, “Ensuring a stable source of recruits.”

Jiang Miao didn’t say anything, but her body moved uneasily.

Her body language was easy to interpret, and Yan He raised his chin to comfort her, “Don’t worry. The future of our child, whether he or she chooses to be a soldier, will be guided by you.”

Jiang Miao breathed a sigh of relief.

“If a child raised by a soldier doesn’t want to enlist after graduating from a military school?” she couldn’t help but ask.

“It’s rare,” Yan He acknowledged, “In that case, the individual must pay the extra amount beyond the obligatory education during their time at the military school. For young people who have just graduated, that’s a significant cost. Of course, if the caregiver is willing to pay, they can avoid military service.”

“But if the caregiver doesn’t want the child to join the military,” Jiang Miao immediately said, “Wouldn’t it be better not to let the child enter a military school in the first place?”

“Yes,” Yan He admitted, “When entering military school, we sign a service agreement. If the obligation period is not fulfilled after graduation, there are not only economic penalties, but the citizen rating will also be significantly reduced.”

“However,” Yan He added, “As caregivers, who are military personnel, there is an initial screening process.”

Jiang Miao asked, “How is the screening done?”

“Because military personnel are encouraged to have more children, many military personnel have more than one child. From the beginning, the decision to personally care for the child is based on the child’s initial scores at birth.” Yan He explained.

Raising a child by a military person and a civilian person would undoubtedly result in different parenting styles, Jiang Miao understood.

“Before the child enters the military school, there is enough time for the caregiver to observe whether the child is suitable to become a soldier. Although most children with high physical fitness are suitable to become soldiers, there are exceptions. In cases of exceptions, a report can be submitted to the military from the beginning, allowing the child to enter a regular school during junior high school. In this case, the economic loss is relatively small.”

“Oh…” Jiang Miao said, “I see…”

Yan He saw her hand tightening on the chopsticks and immediately understood what she was worried about.

He put a piece of soy bone on her plate with a spoon and said casually, “That’s why you need to sign the cooperation agreement after dinner.”

“Oh, okay.” Jiang Miao suddenly realized, “Huh?”

“If you sign with me, you’ll need to sign the military version. This version is specifically for military personnel, and military personnel have the priority to decide custody based on the newborn’s physique. But since I never intended to be the caregiver, I will directly waive this clause.”

“Mr. Major!” Jiang Miao was touched.

Yan He felt that her wide-eyed and watery-eyed look was quite familiar.

After thinking about it, oh… like a small rodent in the forest.

“But I still have to remind you,” he said, “Based on my genetic analysis, the most suitable profession for me is a soldier. This child inherits my genes, and although you will be the caregiver, there is a high probability that he or she will lean towards choosing the military as a profession. Some things are engraved in the genes, passed down through generations, and it’s challenging to change them through upbringing.”

“That’s okay.” Jiang Miao held her chopsticks and said seriously, “If it’s a choice made by him or her after growing up, I will respect his or her personal wishes no matter what. What I cannot accept is letting someone else decide his or her future when the person is still a minor, still doesn’t understand anything, and not giving him or her the right to choose.”

She paused for a moment, hesitated for a while, and couldn’t help but ask, “Major, for someone like you forced into a military school in junior high and then forced into service, do you feel…”

Unwilling? Unhappy?

“No,” Yan He’s answer was clear.

“In fact, genetic analysis has proven to be correct,” Yan He said, “Not only am I suitable, but I also love this profession. Most of my comrades on the front line love this job just like me, love the battlefield.”

“Of course, I don’t deny that some people are only attracted by the high salary to join the military. In reality, there are many people like that in garrison units, so the garrison units in the Capital Star Circle are jokingly called the retirement units by us on the front line.”

Yan He stopped abruptly, and his tone became somewhat unnatural.

Jiang Miao also thought: since it’s a retirement unit, why did someone like Yan He, who loves the battlefield and has received medals, get transferred here?

She had the intention to ask but when she raised her eyes, she saw Yan He put down the spoon and lowered his eyes. She felt that Yan He seemed to be avoiding her, so she thought for a while but did not speak.

Let’s wait until later when they became more familiar, and ask him again.

But she didn’t need to wait until later. After the two finished dinner and sat in the living room, preparing to negotiate and sign the contract downloaded from the government website, Yan He spoke.

“Before signing this agreement, there’s something not in my resume that I think you have the right to know.” He said, pulling up a document from his smart brain and sending it to Jiang Miao’s.

“What’s this?” Jiang Miao looked closely, then raised her eyebrows in suspicion, “Post-traumatic stress disorder?”

Yan He nodded, “Mild.”

Jiang Miao fell silent for a moment and asked, “Can you tell me more about it?”

“In simple terms,” Yan He said, “I previously undertook a mission deep into enemy territory for seven months, and I only returned two months ago. I… came back alone; none of my people… made it back.”

Yan He described it very “simply,” but Jiang Miao sensed the hidden pain beneath his calm voice.

Jiang Miao immediately remembered the latest medal in his resume. Calculating the time, it was probably obtained during this mission.

This merit was built upon the lives of his colleagues, and Yan He’s lowered eyes and indifferent gaze made Jiang Miao understand that he didn’t consider this merit an honor.

“So…,” Jiang Miao hesitated, “What are the symptoms of this mild disorder, and to what extent?”

“Mainly, it manifests as insomnia, low mood, and mental tension,” Yan He said.

“And what else?” Jiang Miao asked.

“Nothing else,” Yan He said, then glanced at her and added, “There’s no tendency towards violence; you can rest assured.”

“Is that all?” Jiang Miao breathed a sigh of relief, “You scared me. I thought it would be severe.”

“For me, it’s already severe enough,” Yan He said, “I am a seasoned officer, stationed on the frontline of the war, often tasked with high-risk missions. A slight mistake results in loss of life. So, my superiors temporarily transferred me to the rear, considering it a form of recuperation.”

“I understand, I understand,” Jiang Miao twisted her fingers, “But, this symptom doesn’t seem to have a significant impact on daily life, right?”

Yan He nodded, “Yes, that’s correct.”

“I also feel that way; you’ve been living with me for several days, and I haven’t noticed anything. You seem perfectly normal, and you even seem quite cheerful,” Jiang Miao said.

Yan He’s expression softened.

“Speaking of which, I should thank you, Doctor.” He said, “Although the days of cohabitation are short, I’ve been very relaxed these days. You have a kitchen, which surprised me. Cooking is a very stress-relieving activity for me. Living with you is also pleasant; Doctor, you are a woman who makes people feel relaxed and happy.”

Being praised like this by the ideal type of two lifetimes made Jiang Miao feel like she was floating.

But Yan He said, “I should have told you about this at the beginning. I apologize for waiting until today.”

But he did mention it before signing the agreement, right? This report wasn’t in his public records due to military secrecy, and they could’ve easily gone through with having the child without mentioning it.

“Okay, apology accepted,” Jiang Miao forgave Yan He easily.

“So…” Yan He looked at the other screen in front of her.

“Wait a minute.” Jiang Miao’s fingers moved quickly, embedding the clauses she had prepared into the contract template and pushing it to Yan He, “Take a good look and see if there’s anything that needs to be modified…”

Before she could finish saying the word “changed,” Yan He had already raised his hand, directly authorized, and marked the electronic signature, approving it.

“…” Jiang Miao. “”Shouldn’t you at least take a look.”

“No need.” Yan He smiled, “I believe in Doctor Jiang.”

“…”

Damn it, what PTSD, that smile… is obviously very warm.
