Chapter 82

The narrow corridor felt a bit crowded as Wen Jing politely pushed Jun Yanzhi back and went ahead. Calmly turning around, he almost bumped into a protruding corner but was quickly shielded by Jun Yanzhi’s hand.

Jun Yanzhi softly said, “Be careful… don’t hurt yourself on the stones.”

Wen Jing was aware that Jun Yanzhi was trying to tease him, but he didn’t know how to react. He coughed lightly and said, “Those stones are not as delicate as you, nor do they cry as much as you do.”

Jun Yanzhi’s expression changed, and he lowered his head, “I did cry a lot during those three years…” As he spoke, his voice became somewhat bitter.

Wen Jing knew he had said the wrong thing and instantly regretted it. He coaxed with a bitter face, “It’s all my fault, I was wrong, Jun shixiong…” Please don’t cry anymore; if you cry, I’ll cry too.

With his head down, Wen Jing led the way forward.

With the advantage of geographical location and people, but lacking the right timing, if it weren’t for Liu Qianmo waiting outside, he would have stayed here with Jun Yanzhi…

The two of them walked out of the dungeon, with Jun Yanzhi as silent as ever, and Wen Jing standing five steps away from him, seemingly feeling a bit wronged and uncomfortable.

Liu Qianmo had something on his mind and didn’t notice the strangeness between the two. He anxiously said, “Five to six hundred disciples of the Qing Xu Sword Sect suddenly got minor wounds that won’t stop bleeding. Elder Yun Xi is a bit worried and asked me to call you to see if there’s any solution.”

Wen Jing was taken aback, “Isn’t Xi Fei dead?”

Liu Qianmo hurriedly replied, “Xi Fei is dead, and Zhu Jin has been captured, but there are still five to six hundred people in our Sword Sect who encountered trouble. I don’t know what happened. You should hurry and take a look.”

Jun Yanzhi said, “Grind Baiying Grass and Jinming Grass into a potion, apply it on the wounds, and do not take any elixirs or use any magical techniques. Wen Jing and I will go to Elder Yun Xi to discuss it with him.”

Liu Qianmo repeatedly agreed and flew off immediately, “I’ll go prepare. Elder Yun Xi is at the residence of the Peak Master of Yurong Peak.”

Wen Jing pulled Jun Yanzhi and said, “Let’s go.”

Jun Yanzhi walked with his head down, lost in thought, and didn’t say much. Wen Jing didn’t want to disturb him and couldn’t help but wonder: Xi Fei is dead, Zhu Jin has been caught, who else could be behind this? They were so focused on Xi Fei that they didn’t notice another person hiding in the shadows. What was terrifying was that this person possesses the Blood-summoning Flag.

He couldn’t help asking, “Jun shixiong, do you know who this person is and what their purpose is?”

Jun Yanzhi said softly, “Do you know? I saw with my own eyes that my mother’s sister was killed. I killed the two people who murdered them with my own hands in Heng Tian Sect.”

Advertisements

Wen Jing tightly held his hand, “Hmm, it’s good that they’re dead.”

Jun Yanzhi’s gaze turned slightly cold, “But the person who killed my father, I have never found. Among the demonic cultivators I interrogated, two of them said that they personally saw Duan Xuan kill my father.”

Wen Jing softly exclaimed, “Back then, someone impersonated the Master and, together with a group of demonic cultivators, destroyed the Hengyang Palace. Wasn’t that person Xi Fei?”

“Xi Fei is used to operating from the shadows, devising plans from behind the scenes, and he doesn’t like to get his hands stained with blood directly. Posing as my father to lead the troops into battle is not something he would do. I did find it a bit strange, but I didn’t think much about it…”

If that person back then wasn’t pretending to be Master, then could they be Jun Yanzhi’s father’s murderer? Who exactly is this person?

The two fell silent, lost in their thoughts, as they headed straight to Xi Fei’s residence on Yurong Peak.

This was the residence of the Qing Xu Sect’s sect master, and the architectural layout was carefully crafted, exuding a grand and majestic aura. Two ancient trees, each over a thousand years old, stood on the left and right, their branches and leaves blocking out the sun.

Before Wen Jing and Jun Yanzhi could speak, a hoarse voice from inside said, “Come in.”

As they entered, they saw a clear spring that occupied most of the courtyard, with its bottom visible through the crystal-clear water. The courtyard was filled with spiritual herbs emitting a refreshing fragrance. Elder Yun Xi sat on a stone chair, flipping through a book.

Wen Jing said, “Elder Yun Xi, the disciples are waiting for your orders.”

Elder Yun Xi closed the book, “Does ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art’ have the ability to dispel demonic techniques? Can it solve the problem of the Blood-summoning Flag?”

Jun Yanzhi replied, “I have asked the eldest shixiong to prepare medicine to stop the bleeding, so there should be no major issues. Later, I will go and try to solve the problem.”

Wen Jing asked, “Elder, do you know about the Blood-summoning Flag?”

Elder Yun Xi stroked his beard and tossed the book in his hand to Wen Jing, sighing softly, “That incident from back then caused the death of quite a few people. I have secluded myself for many years and had no idea that something like this would happen.”

Jun Yanzhi said, “Since the Elder has read the records about Xi Fei, did it mention who impersonated the Master and slaughtered Hengyang Palace with the Blood-summoning Flag?”

Elder Yun Xi stroked his beard again, “In his secret chamber, there are at least a thousand volumes of records. The big and small events of the Sword Sect over the past century are all documented. After searching for a long time, I only found records of Lu Zhen’s death.”

Wen Jing briefly flipped through the book in his hand, most of which were about the daily events of the Sword Sect. He opened his mouth to say something but hesitated.

Elder Yun Xi sighed, “You don’t need to read it. I’ll tell you. Lu Zhen loved studying the history of the sect from a young age and had a deep understanding of the various sects in Zhufeng Country. Xi Fei grew up together with him, they were about the same age, and their relationship was deeper than that of other shixiongs. In the historical records of Hengyang Palace, there was a vague mention of an ancestor with a scar on his left face. It was nothing significant, but Lu Zhen happened to read this sentence by chance. He found it intriguing and told Xi Fei about it, also mentioning that Hengyang Palace’s ‘Shangyun True Technique,’ though just a mental cultivation method, had some similarities with the ‘Immortal Sword Art’ that Long Sun Liupin practiced back then. It was an innocent remark, but Xi Fei took an interest in restoring the Sword Sect to its former glory and naturally became intrigued by Hengyang Palace. He wanted to follow the clues and investigate whether Hengyang Palace was descended from Long Sun Liupin’s disciple.”

Jun Yanzhi listened silently.

“Not long after, he was chosen as my successor to the sect master position, full of energy and ideas. He temporarily forgot about this matter. Lu Zhen was originally a peaceful and reclusive person, but gradually, he couldn’t get along well with Xi Fei. Naturally, they grew apart, and Lu Zhen quietly focused on teaching his disciples at the Huishi Peak. It was during this time that he took in Duan Xuan, who was only twelve years old.”

Wen Jing couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.

“Duan Xuan was an exceptional talent, quiet and diligent. Lu Zhen liked him very much and treated him well. In fact, he treated all his disciples well, but Duan Xuan, being an orphan from a young age, had never experienced such care from anyone before. Over time, he developed some inexplicable feelings.”

Elder Yun Xi continued, “I must bear some responsibility for this too. Even as a child, I could see some hints of Duan Xuan’s feelings towards your Master. Once, I encountered Lu Zhen and Duan Xuan gathering spiritual herbs. The mountain dew was heavy, and there was some drizzle. Duan Xuan walked behind Lu Zhen, holding an umbrella over his head, while he got drenched. I teased Duan Xuan and said, ‘You’re so good to your Master, you should marry him in the future.’ It was just a joke, but I didn’t expect him to blush and leave in anger.”

Wen Jing secretly gave Jun Yanzhi a pitiful look.

Elder Yun Xi sighed again, “Xi Fei watched as Duan Xuan and Lu Zhen grew closer day by day, and he felt uncomfortable. However, as the sect master, he had a great responsibility, and Duan Xuan was a rare talent. He couldn’t let personal feelings affect his judgment, so he distanced himself further from Lu Zhen. The Sword Sect’s status among the Five Great Sects declined, and Xi Fei became anxious, considering the idea of merging with Hengyang Palace.”

Jun Yanzhi asked, “How would the merger work?”

“Xi Fei carefully investigated Hengyang Palace’s history and discovered that, apart from the ‘Shangyun True Technique,’ the other sword techniques and mental cultivation methods also had some similarities with the Sword Sect’s methods. He became more convinced of the connection. He started approaching your father, trying to win him over with emotions and reason, attempting to persuade him to submit to the Sword Sect.”

“My father would never agree.”

“Naturally, your father would not admit that Hengyang Palace had any connection to the Qingxu Sword Sect. At the time, he was completely unaware of it. When Xi Fei mentioned the two ancient scrolls of inheritance, your father’s expression changed, which made Xi Fei even more clear about the situation. The ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art’ was originally called the ‘Diyan Heart Method,’ and the ‘Wuxing Guiyuan Sword Art’ was originally the ‘Su Heart Sword Art.’ Although Hengyang Palace changed the names of the inheritances, their content remained the same. Your father discovered that Hengyang Palace actually originated from the Qingxu Sword Sect, which left him conflicted. He refused the merger and avoided Xi Fei from then on.”

“Xi Fei certainly didn’t stop there.”

“Since Xi Fei confirmed that the two ancient scrolls of inheritance were still there, how could he easily give up? He was quite sincere at the time and disguised himself many times, making promises to Duan Xuan and other disciples who followed him, saying that they could enjoy the resources of the Sword Sect. Your father was more conservative and bound by the family tradition, so he was determined not to agree, leading to a deadlock between the two sides.”

“Mm…”

Elder Yun Xi sighed, “Unexpectedly, at this time, the incident of Lu Zhen being harmed by demonic cultivators happened.”

He paused for a moment before continuing, “Long Sun Liupin took away the ‘Diyan Heart Method’ and the ‘Su Heart Sword Art,’ but due to their antiquity and being a shameful matter for the Sword Sect, not many people knew about them, and even fewer knew their names. If Xi Fei hadn’t been the sect master, he wouldn’t have known about the effects of the ‘Diyan Heart Method’ and the ‘Su Heart Sword Art.’ Xi Fei felt upset and angry due to your father’s repeated refusals. He could only talk to Lu Zhen about this matter, so he went to find him that night.”

“And then?”

“By this time, Lu Zhen’s body had already started to decay, festering, but he spent every day not eating or sleeping. When Xi Fei saw him, he was shocked. Under questioning, Lu Zhen remained silent, only saying that he had accidentally offended a demonic cultivator and became the target of retaliation. Xi Fei was anxious and impatient, knowing that only Hengyang Palace’s ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art’ could save him. So, he once again boldly visited Hengyang Palace, asking your father to find someone to learn the ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art.'”

Jun Yanzhi’s face slightly turned pale. “Unfortunately, at the age of six, I was already chosen to learn the ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art.'”

“Correct,” Elder Yun Xi sighed. “Your father carefully considered but still refused. The ‘Baiyao Qianhun Art’ could only be practiced after you reached at least fifteen years old; otherwise, it would be extremely easy to backfire and cause sudden death. At that time, you were only ten years old, and Lu Zhen had less than a month left to live. If he forcefully made you practice, it would have been a death sentence for you. Lu Zhen was just an outsider; how could your father sacrifice his son’s life for him?”

Jun Yanzhi’s eyelashes trembled slightly. “I understand.”

“Xi Fei waited in front of Hengyang Palace for several days and nights, but it was all in vain. Later, he couldn’t wait any longer and returned to the Sword Sect to visit Lu Zhen. However, he found that Lu Zhen’s body had already decayed beyond recognition, and he was dead. All the pill boxes in the room were empty, as if he couldn’t bear the pain and took a large amount of pills to commit suicide. Lu Zhen left behind many records for Duan Xuan, mostly about daily life. From the scattered and indirect descriptions, Xi Fei roughly deduced what had happened.”

Wen Jing sighed, “I didn’t expect it to be like this…”

“Then you can probably guess what happened next. Overwhelmed by grief, Xi Fei couldn’t control himself and placed all his anger and resentment on Hengyang Palace, which remained tight-lipped, and the demonic cultivators who had harmed Lu Zhen. He swore to annihilate them all. Lu Zhen’s death was caused by Duan Xuan, so Xi Fei didn’t spare him either. This led to the incident where he ordered the Fu Xiu faction to disguise themselves as Duan Xuan, leading the demonic cultivators to exterminate Hengyang Palace.”

Jun Yanzhi’s face turned pale, nodding. “I understand.”

Wen Jing tightly held his hand. “Shixiong…”

“Innocent Hengyang Palace was entangled in this matter, but Xi Fei had already lost his humanity and was solely focused on merging Hengyang Palace and regaining the inheritance to revive the Sword Sect, convincing himself that it was for the sake of the sect,” Elder Yun Xi sighed. “Xi Fei was already somewhat stubborn, but from then on, he became truly cold and ruthless.”

Wen Jing thought to himself, everyone has different mechanisms for enduring pain. If given a choice, he would rather everyone cry for three years like Jun Yanzhi. Xi Fei’s self-hypnosis truly caused harm.

Elder Yun Xi said, “That’s all I’ve read so far. You go and check on those injured disciples, and I’ll continue looking for the next book. I’ll inform you when I finish reading it.”

“Thank you, Elder. Shixiong, let’s go.”

“Yes, let’s go to Huishi Peak.”

Without delay, the two bid farewell to Elder Yun Xi and hurried towards Huishi Peak. Wen Jing held Jun Yanzhi’s hand and whispered, “Shixiong, now that we have clarified most of the situation, at least we have some answers.”

“Yes.”

“This matter is really… complicated,” Wen Jing advised again, “for now, let’s not think too much. Elder Yun Xi will figure out the rest, and then we can make plans.”

“Yes.”

Before they could settle down, they saw several disciples gathered in front of Wen Jing’s residence from a distance. Among them was Liu Qianmo, anxiously asking, “Why does Da Gui (Great Tortoise) look like this?”

“Can he survive?”

Wen Jing’s heart trembled as he rushed down, shouting loudly, “Make way, what happened to Da Gui?”

He pushed through the crowd and saw Da Gui lying motionless on the ground, blood flowing and continuously dripping down. Wen Jing’s lips turned pale, and he couldn’t even speak, kneeling down to gently touch him.

Da Gui raised his head and glanced at him, struggling to open his mouth.

The crowd gasped in shock.

There was half a finger and a jade ring inside Da Gui’s mouth.

“Whose ring is this? Who hurt Da Gui like this?” Wen Jing picked up the half finger, “Whose is it?”

Mo Shaoyan quickly said, “I was walking halfway when I suddenly heard someone screaming about a dead turtle near your residence. I rushed over to see a person in a cloak running away in a panic, holding a black flag. Da Gui was lying on the ground, covered in blood.”

Liu Qianmo anxiously asked, “Could you recognize who it was?”

“No…”

“Can Da Gui be saved?”

Da Gui carefully shifted a bit towards Wen Jing, rubbing his head against Wen Jing’s hand, and then opened his mouth to gently bite. Halfway through the bite, it seemed as if it suddenly fell asleep, becoming motionless.

Wen Jing was bewildered and asked, “Jun shixiong, what happened to it?”

Jun Yanzhi calmly pulled Wen Jing away and squatted down, gently lifting Da Gui’s head. He infused a stream of spiritual energy into Da Gui’s body, bowed his head in silence for a long time, and finally raised his head, whispering, “Shidi, don’t worry, let me see if there’s any way to help.”

Wen Jing softly asked, “What’s wrong? It just bit me earlier, did it faint?”

Jun Yanzhi held his hand and hoarsely reassured him, “Yes, it fainted.”

Wen Jing gazed at him blankly, feeling his eyes welling up with tears.

Hello! Thank you for the chapter! I noticed a little error with how you wrote the honorifics. Usually in Pinyin, it's different from the English because it would actually be "[name] + [honorific]". So in English it's "Senior Brother Jun", but in Pinyin, it should be hyphenated and the honorific lowercase to "Jun-shixiong" 🙂

But regardless, thank you for the chapter!
