Chapter 10  “Fu Sheng, let’s get divorced.”

He Yuan was crying so hard that he couldn’t catch his breath. Tears streamed down his reddened face, his gaze vacant. His whole body trembled at the slightest touch, as if it would shatter and release a pool of soft warm water at any moment.

The inn was quiet, with the sound of crickets chirping and the crisp chime of wind chimes as the wind blew under the eaves. But there was no sound of voices.

From dusk until late at night, He Yuan’s glands were marked with overlapping bite marks.

Fu Sheng turned his head slightly, looking at him coldly. “Is it that you can’t or you don’t want to?”

He Yuan remained silent. Fu Sheng had never been so cold before, and he couldn’t quite figure out his temper. Fu Sheng was too unpredictable at the moment.

Fu Sheng said, “It seems like you didn’t take what I said earlier to heart.” He paused and then sneered, a bit sarcastically, “But of course, you don’t have me in your heart, so why would you care about my words?”

He Yuan remained silent, his gaze somewhat dazed. He indeed hadn’t taken Fu Sheng’s words to heart, not because he didn’t care, but because in his understanding, Fu Sheng was cold and rational, like a sharp steel blade. He was a true soldier, skilled in decision-making and strategy, always accustomed to maximising his own interests in everything he did.

Just like when He Beijia appeared, Fu Sheng’s first thought wasn’t whether their marriage would be ruined, or if He Yuan would be sad and disappointed, or even the legendary love story of perfect compatibility and the 100% match of AO pheromones. Instead, he considered how the high matching rate of O pheromones could help him pass the physical fitness index test for future promotions.

Even if Fu Sheng had volunteered to fight on the front lines to marry He Yuan, he would still have gone to the front lines without him because it was the fastest way to build military achievements. Although, with the shelter of his family, Fu Sheng would eventually climb to his current high position. However, with Fu Sheng’s arrogance and pride, he wouldn’t tolerate himself being a mediocre officer relying on the assistance of his ancestors for his entire life.

Fu Sheng was always rational; he always knew how to make the right decisions.

So when He Beijia appeared, He Yuan knew that Fu Sheng would eventually make the right decision.

“He Yuan? Who are you people?” A voice filled with vigilance suddenly reprimanded from outside the courtyard of the inn.

He Yuan looked up and saw several cars at the entrance, along with a row of casually dressed, upright figures. In the middle was the inn owner’s daughter, who had finally returned from the market.

She looked at Fu Sheng, who stood tall and imposing in the courtyard, with a face full of surprise. He had a cold expression and held someone wrapped in a blanket in his arms. Outside, there were so many fierce-looking people standing still. Her heart almost stopped in fear. Could it be that they were going to do something sinister in their family’s inn?

“Who… who are you? I’m telling you, I’ve already called the police, you—”

“It’s me.” He Yuan took off the blanket covering his head, turned around, and spoke with a gentle gaze, “It’s alright, he is… my husband. They are all my husband’s men.”

The girl’s eyes brightened. “He Yuan?” She looked at the people outside and then at Fu Sheng. Suddenly, she became excited and blushed, covering her mouth and giggling secretly.

He Yuan knew from her reaction that she probably thought of some strange TV drama plot and was excited about it. Then he realised that Fu Sheng was whispering softly with his head down, “You were with her today, and she was holding your arm. You looked very happy.”

He Yuan was startled. It seemed that Fu Sheng had arrived earlier than he had imagined and had sent someone to monitor him. So regardless of whether he would come back to retrieve his ID or not, he probably wouldn’t be able to escape, and it might even anger Fu Sheng.

“We have nothing between us.”

Fu Sheng chuckled, precisely because he knew there was nothing going on that he could now appear calm and composed.

He Yuan was led into the car, and Fu Sheng didn’t look at him or speak again throughout the journey, only holding him tightly. The car then headed towards the airport, where there was a private landing zone. The reason Fu Sheng had arrived so quickly was that he had flown in on a private plane.

The private plane was borrowed from a friend. Since Fu Sheng was in a period of advancement, he couldn’t use a military-owned private plane without a legitimate reason, so he had to borrow one. Fortunately, it wasn’t difficult for someone in his position to borrow a mere plane.

By now, He Yuan was exhausted and couldn’t hold on anymore. His head slowly drooped, and as soon as he put on the noise-cancelling headphones, he fell asleep.

When he woke up again, he found himself back at the apartment. He got out of bed without putting on his shoes and walked around the room. He didn’t see Fu Sheng’s figure, but as he looked around at the familiar decorations and furniture, He Yuan couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

He stood in place, pondering for a few seconds, then suddenly walked quickly towards the balcony. He pulled back the heavy curtains in one swift motion, and the glaring sunlight instantly spilled in. After his eyes adjusted to the familiar brightness, He Yuan opened his eyes wider and couldn’t hide his astonishment.

He saw that the blue sky and white clouds seemed to be quite close. When he looked into the distance, all he could see were aerial vehicles, sky roads, and towering skyscrapers. It was a city full of metal and modern design, a highly modernised and mechanised city—it was, in fact, the capital of the Outer Ring.

Previously, whether it was the university where he taught or the Huashang Apartment where he lived, including the military district compound, there were rarely heavy elements of modern technology. Those places belonged to the inner circle of the capital and had maintained their traditional appearance over the years, preserving a slow-paced style that blended with nostalgia and the old era. So it was rare to see aerial vehicles and sky roads there.

This wasn’t the Huashang Apartment?

He Yuan realised this, and he slowly turned his head to look at the decoration of the place he had lived in for six years. From the layout of the room to the arrangement of the tables and chairs, from the silver-grey carpet to the TV cabinet missing a corner, it was all filled with familiar traces. Despite not being the exact replica of his previous living space, there was a ridiculous sense of absurdity permeating the air.

He Yuan felt a sense of panic, his scalp tingling.

What on earth was Fu Sheng doing? What was his plan?
