InterStellar Dad

Chapter 15: Diary

Xiaona has already taken control of the household robot to move Yan He’s luggage into the bedroom.

Jiang Miao tactfully exits the guest room—now, it should be called Yan He’s bedroom, or maybe, Dad’s room?

Jiang Miao’s thoughts wander, already imagining the scene where this child’s father, Yan He, solemnly but patiently teaches their shared child how to glide on a jet-powered skateboard on the lawn.

Thinking of that wonderful scene, Dr. Jiang can’t help but smile like a fool.

Yan He closes the door, opens the suitcase, and activates a privacy shield device. In Xiaona’s monitoring, Yan He’s bedroom becomes a blank space.

This device is commonly used by people on business trips. Some individuals are more privacy-conscious and don’t want their personal activities monitored by hotel AI, primarily out of fear of data leakage.

From the ancient Earth era to the interstellar era, there has never been a shortage of perverts who enjoy peeping into others’ lives.

Yan He then takes out his desktop intelligence brain.

After a while, this handsome young military officer lifts his gaze again and says, “I should have applied earlier, actually. I wasn’t very focused before.”

He sighs gently, his voice carrying a discernible regret, regretting that he didn’t apply for genetic elite parenting sooner.

“This time, going deep into enemy territory,” he says, “coming back makes you a hero, but the chances of not coming back are greater.”

“I’ve frozen my own sperm in the military sperm bank.”

“If I die, Mr. Yan Shen, my guardian, will be notified. In my will, I’ve left all my property to him and entrusted him to find a woman willing to continue my DNA with my sperm, conceive a child, and give birth.”

The person in the video chuckles self-deprecatingly, saying, “I used to hear about senior military personnel doing this and even made fun of them. It’s only when it’s your turn that you can understand – reproduction is truly an instinct inherent in our genes.”

“Compared to leaving behind property, medals, writings, or anything else, it seems that only in times like these do you really feel that it’s indeed necessary… to leave behind a child.”

“Don’t you think so?”

After posing this rhetorical question in the video, the person falls silent for a moment, looks at the camera, and says, “That’s how it is.”

The screen goes black, and the video ends.

The fears faced alone, the emotions handled in solitude, the regrets and sorrows born out of things that should have been done earlier but weren’t, and the instinctive longing and determination to have a child – all of these are encapsulated in this video.

Yan He replays this segment of the video, pressing his fist against his lips, lowering his gaze. For a long time, there is no movement, resembling a living statue.

Half an hour later, Yan He precisely opens the door and comes out to eat. Jiang Miao has been waiting for him in the dining room. Hearing footsteps, she turns her head, and her breath catches.

Yan He takes off his black high-neck uniform jacket, wearing only a white shirt and black pants. The classic black and white combination, broad shoulders, slim waist, and long, strong legs make him look tall and fit.

Should I ask Xiaona to lower the room temperature now? Will it be too obvious?

“Sorry, am I late?” Yan He asks as he rolls up his shirt sleeves, noticing that Jiang Miao is just staring at him without saying anything.

Jiang Miao stares at Yan He’s long and powerful fingers, saying, “No, how could it be late for you…”

“Not a minute… late at all,” she adds, glancing at the decorative wall clock that prioritizes aesthetics over practicality.

Indeed, not a minute late, almost like clockwork precision.

“Um, I’ll go get the food,” Jiang Miao, who has been single for too long, suddenly finds herself alone in a room with a man she’s not very familiar with. It feels a bit awkward, so she quickly finds an excuse and turns around. Normally, she might even ask the household robot to help with serving the food, but today she decides to be diligent and do it herself.

It’s just a few steps away. The food processor is in the dining room, not in the kitchen.

The kitchen Jiang Miao decorated is a traditional one, tailor-made for cooking enthusiasts. Unfortunately, since its completion, Jiang Miao has hardly set foot in it.

To welcome Yan He, Jiang Miao has ordered several dishes today, all of them hearty. As she opens the food processor’s warming compartment, several dishes are already plated in biodegradable disposable eco-friendly trays, steaming hot.

Yan He comes over to help as well.

Feels like he’s a very diligent and discerning man! In the ancient Earth era, he would probably be the kind of son-in-law that a mother-in-law would appreciate… Ah, what am I thinking!

Jiang Miao vigorously shakes her head.

She realizes that despite having lived two lives and clearly preferring the societal structure of this current era, the various aspects of her previous life are deeply ingrained and not easily eliminated.

Although she intentionally added some hearty dishes to welcome Yan He, the dishes made by the food processor just feel lacking, as if there’s a missing ingredient called “festivity.”

In her previous life, every time Jiang Miao returned home during holidays, the meals her mother prepared were filled with the taste of “festivity.” Zhang Ya could create such flavors when she was in a good mood and cooking in person.

Yet, what the food processor produces falls a bit short.

This is the first meal for the two of them on their first meeting, and Jiang Miao observes discreetly.

While she really, really wants Yan He’s excellent genes, she also has her limits. For example, she cannot tolerate things like loud chewing during meals.

Luckily, it’s not an issue.

Even during the meal, Yan He sits up straight. Catching Jiang Miao’s scrutinizing gaze, he asks, “What’s wrong?”

Jiang Miao, caught peeking, feels a slight embarrassment. Considering that living together is for mutual observation, she decides to be open about it and says, “Hmm… you can relax a bit.”

Yan He glances at Jiang Miao’s tense shoulders, “Hmm,” he says, “You too.”

Jiang Miao clears her throat and asks, “Is the food still to your liking?”

Does she really need to review standard dishes made by the food processor? Yan He politely responds, “It’s okay.”

Jiang Miao realizes she asked a silly question and tries to make up for it, “Would you like some wine?”

Men seem naturally unable to resist tobacco and alcohol. Even someone as seemingly strict as Yan He responds immediately, “If you don’t mind.”

“Of course not.” Jiang Miao senses a bit of pleasure in Yan He’s voice. Since they met, this is the only hint of emotion he’s shown. Jiang Miao seizes the opportunity and asks, “Red wine? Beer?”

“Beer.”

Jiang Miao breathes a sigh of relief. Red wine has too much ceremony, making it feel like a business banquet or a romantic date. Beer is a better choice.

Sure enough, once the beer is on the table, the atmosphere lightens, giving off a somewhat homey feeling.

Seemingly in a casual chat mood, Yan He casually asks, “Do you usually eat machine-made meals?”

He’s just making small talk, but Jiang Miao, with nerves on edge, suddenly perks up.

What? Is he expecting his parenting partner to be skilled in cooking?

Jiang Miao hesitates for a moment.

If she could deceive someone into having a child with her, she’d boldly claim to be a cooking expert and then secretly learn. The problem is, after leaving Zhang Ya and graduating from school, Jiang Miao did try cooking on her own, but… she truly lacks any talent for it.

Her cooking is not even as good as the food processor’s.

Jiang Miao can only admit honestly, “Yes.”

Her tone is stiff, shoulders tense, eyes fixed on Yan He.

Yan He notices her reaction, pauses, then realizes and explains, “Just asking casually.”

Jiang Miao breathes a sigh of relief.

Yan He is a bit helpless. He noticed it from the first video call—Dr. Jiang always seems nervous.

For a woman as beautiful and accomplished as her, with plenty of men waiting to have a fling, engage in a long-term relationship, or even cooperate in parenting, Yan He can’t fathom why Jiang Miao would be so nervous.

Little does he know that he fits Jiang Miao’s ideal image of the “child’s father” in every way.

For Jiang Miao, he is the one she is destined to have.

Two strangers can only find mundane topics to discuss, but luckily, they share a common interest.

“How do you usually do gravity training?” Yan He asks.

Jiang Miao replies, “I train for two hours each session, three times a week, at 2.5 times gravity.”

Due to Dufa Star being a moderately high-gravity planet, this training intensity ensures that Jiang Miao’s bones and muscles stay in good condition. She feels it’s sufficient.

However, Yan He just nods slightly, revealing no expression on his face, only asking, “How much gravity can your gravity field generator reach at maximum?”

“Three times,” Jiang Miao says.

Yan He says, “I’ll order a new set later.”

Surprised, Jiang Miao asks, “Not enough?”

“I was born on a high-gravity planet,” Yan He explains. “I need at least four times.”

“No need to buy a new one,” Jiang Miao says. “I’ll take it to the company tomorrow for modification.”

Yan He blinks and says, “Okay.”

Jiang Miao asks about Yan He’s work, “Are you about to start your job?”

“No,” Yan He replies. “Just reporting in. Still have a month of unused vacation.”

That means an entire month of being together day and night, no time to slack off!

Under the table, Jiang Miao clenches her fist in excitement!
