I Eat My Own Jealousy chapter 38

Chapter 38

Zong Yue was very considerate. One day before her birthday, she sent specially tailored outfits to Jian Ning and his two friends. The next day, the three of them put on their dresses and, together with Professor Moor, set off for the birthday party.

The party was held in a sprawling estate in the outskirts. They got out of the car before reaching the estate gate, underwent several security checks, and then entered the estate.

The interior of the estate was beautifully decorated and elegant, filled with elegantly dressed nobles, people Jian Ning had only seen on the star network before. Terry and Jenny nervously followed Jian Ning, who was also a bit nervous because of them, unconsciously touching his bowtie.

“Relax, it’s just a party. As long as you don’t do anything out of the ordinary, no one will notice you,” Professor Moor reassured them. Before entering the estate, the gifts they brought were taken away for inspection by the guards. Professor Moor walked lightly with the three youths into the estate.

Upon entering the hall, someone quickly approached Professor Moor to greet him. He led the three of them to the dining table and asked them to stay there and eat while he went off with the person.

Inside the hall, everyone was engaged in elegant conversations, and no one paid any attention to the three of them. They were quickly drawn to the various foods on the table and began to help themselves.

Alan, not believing Terry’s fib, instantly lost his good mood, and he went back to his cousin’s side in anger.

“Your friends?” Carter, holding a glass of wine, noticed the situation by the dining table and asked.

Alan, still angry, replied, “Not at all. They shouldn’t be here.”

Carter, who had heard about the situation in their class from Alan, looked with interest at Jian Ning, who was sharing a piece of cake with Terry. “Is that Jian Ning, the one who transferred from your class to Class B?”

Alan nodded, feeling frustrated.

Carter took a sip of his drink and discreetly observed Jian Ning.

Jian Ning, completely unaware that he was being watched, suddenly heard a commotion at the entrance of the hall. He looked up and saw Shelley and Prince Lan Nuo entering.

As soon as the two arrived, they were surrounded by familiar friends, all of them praising, “Shelley, you look stunning today.”

Shelley smiled graciously and asked Lan Nuo, “Why hasn’t your uncle arrived yet?”

Lan Nuo pretended to be puzzled and said, “Which uncle are you talking about?”

Shelley glared at him, and Lan Nuo chuckled, “I just asked, and he’s on his way.”

Just as they were speaking, there was another commotion at the entrance, and Zong Ye and Zong Ming entered.

“Uncle and Second Uncle,” Lan Nuo went to greet them. “Why did you arrive so late? Shelley was just asking about it.”

Shelley paused in his steps, feeling a bit embarrassed. He then looked at Zong Ye and said, “Marshal.”

Zong Ye scanned the hall, his gaze absentmindedly responding with a casual “Hmm.”

“Uncle, what are you looking at?” Lan Nuo noticed that he was not paying much attention to Shelley and, following his gaze, began to scan the hall as well. When he saw Jian Ning at the corner of the dining table, he tugged at Shelley’s sleeve and said, “Shelley, isn’t that someone from your academy? He’s not in the same class as you. Why is he here?”

Lan Nuo had previously gone to find Jian Ning to help Shelley locate the person who was with Zong Ye.

Shelley saw Jian Ning and instinctively looked at Zong Ye, who had already shifted his gaze away.

“I’ll go and ask. Maybe they sneaked in,” Lan Nuo said casually, about to approach.

“Hold on,” Zong Ye frowned and stopped him. “Your mother’s birthday party, and a few students sneaked in? General Telande is here; go and greet him.”

General Telande was Shelley’s father and currently Lan Nuo’s private tutor, highly respected in the Empire. Lan Nuo had no choice but to follow Zong Ye.

At the corner table, Jian Ning also noticed Zong Ye. Seeing him surrounded by Shelley and Lan Nuo, and surrounded by unfamiliar nobles, Jian Ning quietly averted his gaze. However, Zong Ming, lifting his wine glass, greeted him.

“Is Professor Zong Ming saying hello to us?” several noble girls around them excitedly asked.

As everyone had gathered in the hall, Zong Yue and King Simon finally descended from upstairs. King Simon was a handsome and charismatic man, and Zong Yue looked elegant and noble today. They looked quite compatible together. The only regret was that Zong Yue was not King Simon’s first wife; he had a son with his previous wife, who was five years older than Lan Nuo.

“Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I’m seeing His Majesty and the Queen!” Terry exclaimed, covering his chest. He had come to study on Imperial Star with the intention of graduating and returning to his home planet to become an ordinary farmer. He had never imagined he would get this close to His Majesty and the Queen.

Jenny was also thrilled. Despite being a local of Imperial Star, she had never been this close to His Majesty and the Queen before.

After a few words between Zong Yue and King Simon, they announced the start of the banquet and were the first to glide onto the dance floor for the opening dance.

People around them started entering the dance floor to join in, and Jenny also waved at Jian Ning, saying, “Let’s go dance.”

“I don’t know how,” Jian Ning quickly shook his head and pushed Terry forward. “Let Terry and you go.”

“Miss, may I have this dance?” Terry wiped some cookie crumbs from his mouth, bending over gallantly to extend his hand to Jenny. The two of them happily slid onto the dance floor.

“Aren’t you going to dance?” Jian Ning watched them dance as a male voice sounded beside him.

He turned and recognized the person who had struck up a conversation with him earlier, the young man who had come with Alan.

“I’m Carter, Alan’s cousin,” the young man introduced himself. “I know some things about Alan at the academy. He’s been spoiled since he was a child. If he’s done anything excessive to you, I apologize on his behalf.”

Jian Ning looked at him suspiciously. “You know me?”

Carter raised an eyebrow. “Of course, the only student in decades whose psychic power suddenly skyrocketed after enrollment. If it hadn’t been suppressed, you would have been on the star network a long time ago.”

Jian Ning pursed his lips. He didn’t like Alan, and he didn’t have much fondness for Alan’s cousin either. He spoke, “I’m going to the restroom.”

He turned to leave, but Carter, holding a glass of wine, accidentally spilled it on his clothes. Carter quickly put down the glass and said, “I’m sorry. Let me accompany you to clean up.”

Near the dance floor on the opposite side, General Telande pulled Shelley aside and grinned at Zong Ye. “Zong Ye, would you mind dancing with my son?”

General Telande was a respected elder to Zong Ye. Looking at Shelley’s expectant eyes, Zong Ye hesitated for a moment before deciding. He saw Jian Ning being bothered by a young man near the table across from them. Zong Ye slightly furrowed his brow and said, “I’m feeling a bit tired. I’d like to rest upstairs. Lan Nuo, come and dance with Shelley.”

He called Lan Nuo over, took a few steps toward the opposite side, and then suddenly paused, instructing a waiter with a few words.

Jian Ning didn’t actually want Carter to accompany him to the restroom, and he was frowning when a waiter approached and asked, “Gentlemen, is there anything I can help you with?”

“My clothes accidentally got soaked with wine,” Jian Ning replied.

The waiter glanced at his clothes and said, “Please follow me.” He then led Jian Ning upstairs.

“You can rest here for a while, and once your clothes are cleaned, I will bring them back to you,” the waiter said as he opened a room for Jian Ning and gestured for him to take off his stained suit jacket before leaving and closing the door behind him.

Jian Ning had just settled on the sofa when there was a knock on the door. He walked over, thinking of opening it, but hesitated and instead looked through the peephole. Carter was standing outside.

Why did Alan’s cousin keep bothering him? Jian Ning furrowed his brow and saw that someone else had arrived. Carter turned and said a few words before respectfully leaving.

The newcomer entered the peephole’s view, and Jian Ning recognized him as Zong Ye. Jian Ning opened the door.

Zong Ye seemed somewhat surprised. He had been hesitating whether to knock on the door, but Jian Ning had opened it.

“My clothes got soaked with wine, and the waiter brought me here to change,” Jian Ning explained, thinking Zong Ye probably didn’t know why he was here.

Zong Ye didn’t mention that he had instructed the waiter to bring Jian Ning upstairs. He nodded and said, “Rest here for now. You can come back down when they’re serving the cake.”

With that, they fell into silence, unsure of what to say next. Jian Ning looked up at him and asked, “…Would you like to come in and sit?”

Zong Ye had originally planned to leave but, meeting Jian Ning’s eyes, found himself unconsciously stepping into the room.

Shelley stood at the corner of the corridor, helplessly watching Zong Ye and Jian Ning enter a room. He clenched his lips, wondering what was so special about Jian Ning that made Zong Ye refuse to dance with him.

“Shelley, let’s go downstairs,” Lan Nuo said, noticing how Shelley was affected by the situation. He sighed and pulled Shelley downstairs.

Jian Ning and Zong Ye didn’t stay in the room for too long. The waiter soon brought their cleaned clothes. They descended the stairs one after the other.

Carter stood in a corner, watching Jian Ning and Zong Ye with curiosity. This boy named Jian Ning was truly extraordinary. Not only could he boost his mental powers, but he also seemed to have an unusual connection with the Marshal. Carter couldn’t help but wonder if there were other secrets hidden within him.

He had a feeling that this boy named Jian Ning might prove to be useful to them. He needed to keep a close eye on him.

Jian Ning and Zong Ye came downstairs just as the dance had ended, and it was time to cut the cake. Jian Ning tried to find Terry and Jenny in the crowd, about to walk towards them when suddenly, with a snap, the lights in the hall went out. Only Zong Yue and King Simon remained illuminated.

The crowd in the hall moved towards the source of light, and in the darkness, Jian Ning was bumped into several times. Feeling disoriented, someone grabbed his hand and led him towards the source of light.
