Daydreaming About Me

Chapter 45.3: I intend to pursue you.

Shen Juan didn’t know Ning Yuan, so he didn’t bother listening to any of the discussion about him. He drank the last of his water and placed the empty bottle at the edge of the chair. When he lifted his head he saw several girls timidly approach from the stands, one of them offering him a sports drink.

Shen Juan looked up at her.

The girl blushed. “Classmate Shen Juan, I see you just finished your water, so you can have this. I just bought it…”

Lin Yujing, standing not far away, heard the girl speak and looked over.

He’d finished his water one second, and the next someone brought him a drink.

Talk about perfect timing, more timely than the rain [1].

Can you all put this kind of devotion into your studies? Can you?!

Lin Yujing turned away, pretending to listen to Song Zhiming and the others, but sneaking glances at Shen Juan.

“Should I have given him my QQ number? Will he add me?”

“If he adds it or not, you already gave it to him.”

“…”

With a sound of loudly crinkling plastic, Lin Yujing crushed the mineral water bottle in her hand.

A little water overflowed from it, wet her hand, and fell to the floor drop by drop.

Did you see that?

Men.

Just before the game they were all lovey-dovey with their girlfriends, and now they’re flirting with other girls.

Lin Yujing took a deep breath, turned, and walked out of the stadium.

Shen Juan turned his head and watched her walk out; she looked like she was about to start a fight.

He furrowed his brow and then kicked Wang Yiyang’s rear with his foot. Wang Yiyang reflexively hopped overand lowered his head. “What’s wrong, Master Juan?”

Shen Juan lifted his chin slightly and lowered his voice. “Go pay them back for the water.”

Wang Yiyang said, “Oh,” and, without another word, sprinted over to the group of girls and shouted, “Hey, sisters! Sisters, wait a moment—”

“Come back,” Shen Juan called him again.

Wang Yiyang turned to look at him.

“Can you keep a low profile?” Shen Juan said, “Go over and quietly call her, give her the money in private, and then apologize.”

Yu Pengfei stood to the side, looking bewildered. “Boss Shen, it’s just a bottle of water, not even two yuan. Why bother?”

Shen Juan silently leaned over to pick up his uniform jacket and walked out.

Wen Zihui, standing beside him, understood the situation; girls were always sensitive to these things. She turned to look at Yu Pengfei. “Shut up, you don’t get it.”

Li Lin looked at Yu Pengfei as well. “Yeah, you don’t get it.”

Song Zhiming took a few sips of water. “You don’t f*cking get it,” he said, and then shouted at Shen Juan. “Master Juan! The game starts in ten minutes, hurry up!”

Shen Juan waved behind him.

Lin Yujing couldn’t help but shiver as she left the gymnasium. It had been so crowded, and the shouting and jumping had kept her warm, but as soon as she stepped into the hall a cold draft hit her as the temperature fell. She was only wearing a t-shirt, jersey, and shorts, and with her legs and arms exposed the cold made her teeth chatter.

She stood with her shoulders hunched, and jumped in place a few times. Shivering, she looked back at the closed door to the basketball court, still faintly able to hear the noise inside, then turned and walked toward the restroom.

She walked for a while. As she turned the corner she heard footsteps behind her shortly before a uniform jacket was draped over her shoulders.

Lin Yujing stopped in her tracks. She didn’t need to turn around; she could tell who it was by the scent of his clothes.

She had no intention of acknowledging him. She shrugged her shoulders, and the large uniform jacket fell to the ground with a soft sound.

Without looking back, Lin Yujing continued walking straight forward as if nothing had happened.

She heard Shen Juan’s low chuckle behind her.

This guy.

Is actually.

Still.

Laughing.

Lin Yujing closed her eyes, gritted her teeth, and walked to the women’s restroom. From behind she appeared calm and composed.

She pushed the restroom door open, then closed it behind her. Inside, a few girls were chatting and laughing together.

With an indifferent expression, Lin Yujing walked into the last stall and closed the door, and her calm demeanor disappeared as she stood silently shaking her head in frustration.

Such a bother.

This wasn’t how it happened in books and on TV.

In those stories, the handsome school jerk playing sports is surrounded by girls who eagerly offer him water, but he won’t accept one drop from them. Instead he walks up to the girl he likes and asks with a devilish grin, “Don’t you have any water for me?”

To be fair, Lin Yujing did not in fact have any water for him, but that wasn’t the point.

The point was that in real life, guys would only take water offered by attractive girls before politely saying “thank you.”

All men were liars.

Lin Yujing put on a smile, pulled herself together, and stepped out of the stall. She went to the sink to wash her hands, then turned and left the restroom.

[1] “more timely than Song Jiang” – This is a reference to a Chinese historical figure (Song Jiang) who was fictionalized in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. His nickname is “Timely Rain” because of his generosity.
