Married to the Male Lead’s Hidden Rich Brother

Chapter 59

In contrast to the worries of various families, Zhou Qiaoqiao felt content with her life now. To prevent future threats from the Zhou family, she decided to transfer her household registration out. Therefore, she needed to… steal her household registration book again.

Upon hearing her say this, Yan Wei once again suggested, “…Actually, I think we should just buy it.” For Yan Wei, any problem that could be solved with money wasn’t a problem.

“No, I want to steal it. I don’t want to give money to that bunch of idiots in the Lin family,” Zhou Qiaoqiao clenched her fist, decisively refusing.

“Alright, as long as you’re happy. So, how do you plan to steal it?” Yan Wei asked.

Zhou Qiaoqiao’s eyes lit up as she said, “I’ll send study materials to Zhou Xingxing.”

Yan Wei: “…”

And so, on this Saturday, Zhou Qiaoqiao returned home with a pile of her university materials. Since Sunday happened to be the winter solstice, Zhou Xingxing came home from school to celebrate the festival and conveniently handed over the opportunity to Zhou Qiaoqiao.

This time, Zhou Qiaoqiao didn’t bring any fruits. She went straight to the door and knocked.

Lin Meisu didn’t mind, she turned to continue preparing lunch in the kitchen.

Seeing Lin Meisu busy in the kitchen, Zhou Xingxing brushing his teeth, Zhou Xiongxiong not at home, and Zhou Yingjie having gone out, the timing for stealing the household registration book was perfect! Zhou Qiaoqiao gave Yan Wei a meaningful look and then sneaked into the master bedroom.

When Zhou Xingxing emerged from the bathroom, she saw Yan Wei sitting alone in the living room. Yan Wei was wearing a pure brown sweater, black wide-legged trousers, and a black horn-buttoned wool coat draped over the sofa. He was reading one of Zhou Qiaoqiao’s university materials textbooks. Zhou Xingxing couldn’t tell what was written on it, but whenever Yan Wei read certain parts, he would display a knowing smile.

After a moment’s consideration, Zhou Xingxing still went over to Yan Wei and softly called out, “Yan Wei.”

Yan Wei was taken aback, then turned around to see Zhou Xingxing standing behind him in coral pajamas. He furrowed his brows and said, “Call me brother-in-law.”

Zhou Xingxing made a face and said, “She’s not my sister, and by the way, where is she?”

Yan Wei: “…” These sisters…

Zhou Xingxing immediately brightened up and said, “You guys are stealing the household registration book again, aren’t you?”

Seeing through the ruse, Yan Wei remained unfazed and playfully asked, “Why do you think that?”

“After you guys stole it last time, my dad stopped leaving the household registration book in the master bedroom,” Zhou Xingxing proudly said.

“Oh~” Yan Wei listened with a light smile and asked, “So, where is it now?”

Zhou Xingxing wasn’t falling for it. She turned her head and asked, “Are you trying to trick me? I’m not going to tell.”

Advertisements

“I was just asking casually,” Yan Wei replied.

Zhou Xingxing mischievously smiled, “Casually asking? I don’t believe that.”

Yan Wei smiled as he looked at the slightly open master bedroom door and said, “I really was just asking casually. There are countless ways to get the household registration book, but she insisted on coming back to get it herself, so I accompanied her.”

Zhou Xingxing was taken aback, staring at Yan Wei in a daze, and saw Yan Wei seemed to emit a soft and gentle glow. Yan Wei continued, “As long as she’s happy.”

In Zhou Xingxing’s heart, there was a resounding thud, and her heart started to race.

This infuriating man, his words are so gentle!

While Zhou Xingxing was lost in thought, she saw Zhou Qiaoqiao coming out of the room with a downcast expression.

Seeing Zhou Qiaoqiao come out, Yan Wei smiled and asked, “Didn’t find it?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao nodded and said, “No, he’s not keeping it in the drawer anymore.”

Yan Wei shook his head helplessly, then took Zhou Qiaoqiao’s hand and sat her down on the sofa. Zhou Qiaoqiao’s oversized down jacket made her look as if she was wrapped up, combined with her dispirited appearance, she appeared quite cute.

Lin Meisu finished preparing the dishes and came out with a smile, asking, “What do you want for lunch? Should I go buy some additional ingredients?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao waved her hand and said, “No need, we’ll head back to eat.”

Advertisements

Lin Meisu smiled and said, “How can that be? It’s almost lunchtime. You must eat before you leave.”

Zhou Qiaoqiao was pregnant and loved sleeping, so Yan Wei naturally didn’t wake her up early in the morning. Therefore, by the time the two of them arrived, it was already 10:30 AM.

Zhou Xingxing didn’t inform Lin Meisu about Zhou Qiaoqiao’s plan to steal the household registration book. After Lin Meisu left, she grinned mischievously and asked, “Do you want the household registration book?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao was puzzled by the question, wondering what Zhou Xingxing was about to say.

And then Zhou Xingxing said, “I heard you guys are pretty well off. Get me a Fruity brand computer!”

“What?” Zhou Qiaoqiao looked at her in astonishment and said, “Buy you a computer? Why on earth?”

Zhou Xingxing crossed her legs and said cheerfully, “Because I know where the household registration book is!”

At first, Zhou Qiaoqiao didn’t catch on, but soon she realized and exclaimed, “My dad hid the household registration book? Is he crazy?”

Zhou Xingxing: “…”

And then the “crazy” one came back. As soon as he heard his eldest daughter’s words, Zhou Yingjie immediately became unhappy and said, “Who are you calling crazy?”

Seeing Zhou Yingjie’s return, Zhou Qiaoqiao immediately deflated. It seemed that they wouldn’t be able to get the household registration book today.

Zhou Yingjie gave Zhou Qiaoqiao a glare. Oh, so in her eyes, I’m just a crazy person even though I raised her?

Advertisements

Yan Wei immediately looked serious and said to Zhou Yingjie, “Father-in-law, you should speak more softly to Qiaoqiao. She’s going to be a mother now, be careful not to startle the baby in her belly.”

Zhou Yingjie was taken aback and exclaimed, “She’s pregnant even before the wedding?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao chuckled and asked, “Who are you talking about?”

The only things in Zhou Yingjie’s life that could be used to tease him were extramarital affairs, arguments, and illegitimate children. As soon as he heard Zhou Qiaoqiao’s ambiguous words, he knew she was recalling the incident when Zhou Xiongxiong had visited them before.

Zhou Yingjie hadn’t really minded that incident, and even if Zhou Qiaoqiao was being sarcastic, he could only tolerate it.

So, Zhou Yingjie decided to change the topic and asked Zhou Qiaoqiao, “What did you come back for?”

Not wanting to buy a computer for Zhou Xingxing, Zhou Qiaoqiao straightforwardly told Zhou Yingjie, “I want the household registration book.”

Zhou Yingjie frowned and asked, “Why do you need the household registration book?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao replied with pursed lips, “I want to change my registered address.”

Zhou Yingjie was taken aback, saying, “Why would you change your registered address just because you’re getting married? Who does that?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao pressed her lips together and said, “I just want to.”

Yan Wei gave Zhou Qiaoqiao a reassuring look and then turned to Zhou Yingjie, saying, “Father-in-law, since Qiaoqiao wants to change it, what’s the point of blocking her?”

In fact, Zhou Yingjie knew deep down, what was the point of blocking her? Besides, he hadn’t been very concerned about Zhou Qiaoqiao since she was a child, and after growing up, Lin Meisu had encouraged her to become more independent.

Zhou Yingjie didn’t strongly object to it, but that didn’t mean he didn’t love her at all. He had once been deeply in love with his former wife, Luan Feng. Zhou Qiaoqiao, as the only child of their marriage, had been the center of his affections.

However, no matter how much he loved her, it couldn’t overcome his inner desire to have an heir. Zhou Xiongxiong’s birth had disrupted his previous family and shattered Zhou Qiaoqiao’s love and respect for him.

But what of it? Zhou Qiaoqiao was just a 2 or 3-year-old child, what could she understand? Adult matters were not always black and white; there were always some things that were beyond anyone’s control.

He believed that Zhou Qiaoqiao would understand this as she grew up. As his first child, Zhou Qiaoqiao was unique in his life.

Unfortunately, everything succumbs to time in this world. Moreover, there was Lin Meisu in the mix, along with their children Zhou Xiongxiong and Zhou Xingxing.

He and Zhou Qiaoqiao hadn’t met for a long time, and when they did, they would invariably end up arguing.

He was a man who aimed for great achievements and wealth. He didn’t want to be involved in these petty family matters.

Later on, Zhou Qiaoqiao was sent away, and once she was gone, she was gone! Following her uncle wouldn’t lead her to any losses; he could just send her some money.

As Zhou Yingjie’s concern for Zhou Qiaoqiao waned, he didn’t know how she was living anymore.

Lin Meisu took care of everything for him at home. Domestic matters were a woman’s responsibility, and Zhou Yingjie was well aware that Lin Meisu wasn’t Zhou Qiaoqiao’s birth mother, so there might be some biases in her actions. However, one Zhou Qiaoqiao was enough to disrupt a peaceful home. With her gone, it was also a responsibility for Zhou Xiongxiong and Zhou Xingxing.

Zhou Qiaoqiao started university, and her tuition was over 10,000 yuan a year, with living expenses of around 20,000 yuan. This didn’t even include other expenses. A college student needed tens of thousands of yuan a year. Doing a quick calculation, Zhou Qiaoqiao would study until graduation, then Zhou Xiongxiong would follow suit, and once he graduated, Zhou Xingxing would go to university. This would span about 10 years, and Zhou Yingjie’s annual factory income wasn’t much; when divided among them, there wasn’t much money left.

Therefore, when Lin Meisu suddenly brought up the idea of reducing living expenses, it resonated with Zhou Yingjie. He thought that once the child turned 18, they would be considered adults and parents would have fulfilled their obligations.

Moreover, after reaching 18, children should work hard on their own. He agreed with Lin Meisu’s words. He and Zhou Qiaoqiao had reached this point. Zhou Qiaoqiao acknowledged her own shortcomings, and Zhou Yingjie knew he hadn’t done enough either.

The father-daughter pair didn’t like each other, yet due to their blood ties, they couldn’t reach the point of hatred or a vow to never see each other again.

Hearing that Zhou Qiaoqiao wanted to move out, the flesh on Zhou Yingjie’s cheeks trembled slightly. He seemed to have no reason to refuse. Over these 20 years, he hadn’t shown her excessive affection, and she had developed a barrier in her heart towards him. Father and daughter were like strangers. In reality, whether Zhou Qiaoqiao was on the household registration or not didn’t make much of a difference to him.

“Given the tense relationship between you and Qiaoqiao, there’s no need for both sides to be unhappy because of a household registration issue. Qiaoqiao is still young, and she acts impulsively. But as she grows up, she’ll naturally understand you better. As for the household registration, if Qiaoqiao moves out, she’s still your daughter. There’s no need to worry about severing the father-daughter relationship just because of that. In this regard, Father-in-law need not be concerned,” Yán Wei’s words flattered and guided Zhou Yingjie, leaving him without a response.

“I understand. I’ll get it for you,” unexpectedly, Zhou Yingjie didn’t react in any other way. Instead, he cast a despondent look at Zhou Qiaoqiao, then entered Zhou Xingxing’s room.

Because obtaining the household registration book went too smoothly, Zhou Qiaoqiao found it a bit hard to believe.

She didn’t even stay for lunch; in the afternoon, she went with Yan Wei to change the household registration.

These days, everything had become simplified, including changing household registrations. The whole process took less than half an hour.

Yan Wei’s household registration was straightforward. The whole book was only filled with his name, and Zhou Qiaoqiao’s entry was on the second page. Holding the household registration book in her hand, Zhou Qiaoqiao’s eyes welled up with tears. She choked up a bit and said, “Now I realize that I do harbor some resentment towards him. After moving out, I feel much more relieved.”

Yan Wei patted her head, and that same day, they returned the household registration book to Zhou Yingjie.

Zhou Yingjie seemed to have known it was them from the start. When he opened the door to take the household registration book from them, he asked somewhat sadly, “Are you coming back for the New Year’s celebration tomorrow?”

Zhou Qiaoqiao shook her head. Zhou Yingjie sighed. He was getting old, and Zhou Qiaoqiao hadn’t grown up to understand him as he had hoped. However, he did miss his eldest daughter a bit.

Zhou Yingjie thought, well, let it be. From now on, his interaction with Zhou Qiaoqiao would probably be like this: “I’ll come on the third day of the lunar New Year. If you dare give away my seat to someone else, I’ll make a scene.”

Zhou Qiaoqiao: “…” Are you shameless?

Wearing her red down jacket, Zhou Qiaoqiao was held by Yan Wei’s side, much like a penguin, as they left. Zhou Yingjie watched the couple’s figures for a moment, then closed the door. From that point on, the two would each have their own lives.

As their wedding approached, Zhou Qiaoqiao didn’t make too many preparations. Most of the wedding arrangements were left to Tong Geng. He wasn’t entirely capable, but in this world, money could solve many problems.

The wedding was set for the third day of the lunar New Year. Due to her pregnancy, Yan Wei didn’t involve Zhou Qiaoqiao much in the preparations.

Zhen Guoan, on the other hand, enthusiastically participated. He booked the restaurant at “Dao Xin,” the highest-grade in Yiwu City. The hotel was chosen by Yan Wei, who spent most of his time away and had experienced various hotels. Additionally, he suffered from chronic insomnia, so he knew which hotels would provide him a relatively peaceful night’s sleep. The hotel he booked was one he frequented.

For flight tickets, Yan Wei directly arranged them with the airline company. Zhou Qiaoqiao provided Yan Wei with Yu Bei Bei’s and Ren Qing’s identification information to book their tickets. She didn’t invite other friends or relatives from outside Yiwu City; if they came, they would just be a hassle.

Two days before the New Year, the Yan family learned about Yan Wei’s wedding plans. Mao Jinghua spent a day crying in her room.

Fortunately, Yan Wei didn’t completely cut them off and still informed them. He even brought Zhou Qiaoqiao back home before the wedding. Mao Jinghua was pleased and gave Zhou Qiaoqiao some gold as a gift, with each piece being of significant weight.

The whole process took only an hour, and Yan Wei was about to leave. Mao Jinghua didn’t dare to stop them; she could only see them off at the door.

When they reached the door, Mao Jinghua asked Yan Wei, “Will the bride come to our house on the day?”

Yan Wei shook his head and said, “We’ve booked a hotel. Everyone will go to the hotel.”

Because Yan Wei currently had no plans to move out of his small apartment and the apartment was too small to host guests, he intended to pick up the bride from home and take her to the hotel. This way, they wouldn’t need to trouble his family to host the wedding.

As Yan Wei helped Zhou Qiaoqiao zip up her down jacket, Mao Jinghua suddenly asked, “When are you planning to have children?”

Yan Wei smiled faintly and said, “We already have one.”

As he spoke, Yan Wei led Zhou Qiaoqiao away. Mao Jinghua stood there, taking a while to realize—Zhou Qiaoqiao was pregnant.

Due to the incident from the previous two months, Yan Yifei and Yan Ye didn’t feel comfortable seeing them off. The two of them were hiding in the living room, and before they could exchange more than a few words, Mao Jinghua burst in with an astonished expression, saying, “Qiaoqiao is pregnant.”

Yan Yifei was momentarily taken aback, as if he had just realized something. He asked, “So, if Qiaoqiao is pregnant, does she get a share of the stake?”1Wrong Priorities again. This guy never learns what he should value more than the shares

After saying that, Yan Yifei paused again and sighed. Considering Yan Wei’s current wealth, to be honest, he might not even value the portion of shares owned by Elder Yán.

Amid the eager anticipation of many, Yan Wei’s wedding took place.

On that day, netizens who woke up to their screens suddenly found that several big names were trending.

Linhua Technology

Xin Yi Real Estate

Zhu Di Business

It was as if today was the day for company CEOs to walk the red carpet, with prominent figures continuously being pushed onto the trending list. Among them were the Three-life Movie Emperor, Yu Jingjing, and also internationally acclaimed pianist Jobe Bonner. The reason they were trending was that all these influential people were heading to the same place.

Dao Xin, a well-known venue for high-end consumption in Yiwu City. A five-star hotel, a world for the wealthy.

Zhou Qiaoqiao was brought back to her family’s home on the first day of the New Year. Her wedding dress was the one she had set her eyes on from the beginning. The makeup artist she hired was one of the best in the industry. At 7 a.m., Zhou Qiaoqiao got out of bed, went through her morning routine, and then sat at the makeup table. The makeup artist skillfully opened her makeup kit, which was nearly ten layers deep, and got to work.

Yes, Zhou Qiaoqiao was staying in Zhou Yingjie and Lin Meisu’s room. Although Lin Meisu politely put it that way, Zhou Qiaoqiao wasn’t very courteous in her response. Zhou Yingjie didn’t mind; the groom would be arriving soon, and he couldn’t have them barging into the study, right?

So, for the sake of face, Zhou Yingjie had offered the master bedroom to Zhou Qiaoqiao.

Before Zhou Qiaoqiao arrived, Zhou Yingjie had instructed Zhou Xingxing and Zhou Xiongxiong to tidy up the bridal chamber. Zhou Yingjie’s house was already luxurious for a middle-class family, and since Zhou Qiaoqiao was his eldest daughter and the first among his children to get married, he naturally had to go all out to ensure that everything was perfect.

Hence, Zhou Yingjie had gone out in advance to buy ribbons, a bunch of balloons, consulted people about wedding customs, and did his best to ensure that everything was done properly and respectfully.

On the night before the wedding, Zhou Qiaoqiao woke up hungry. She covered her stomach and went out to look for food, only to see Zhou Yingjie sitting alone on the living room sofa, inflating balloons. Because it was late at night, Zhou Yingjie hadn’t turned on the brightest crystal chandelier; instead, he had illuminated the area with the soft, warm light from the ceiling fixtures.

As a result, the living room still seemed a bit dim.

Zhou Qiaoqiao walked out. Zhou Yingjie had truly aged. The man she had once admired and respected the most now had patches of white hair on his head. His hands trembled slightly as he inflated the balloons.

There were signs of age on his face, he had grown old, while she was still young.

Zhou Yingjie seemed to sense someone behind him, he turned to glance, exclaiming, “You scared the hell out of me, standing behind me in the middle of the night! What are you doing?”

Seeing the pile of balloons in front of him, Zhou Qiaoqiao remarked, “Let Xingxing and Xiongxiong inflate them tomorrow morning!”

“Sigh, I know, go rest!” Zhou Yingjie turned back to continue inflating balloons. He said, “I just can’t sleep, so I’m sitting here and inflating some balloons for no reason.”

Zhou Qiaoqiao stood behind him and said lightly, “There’s no need to inflate balloons. After all, it’s just tomorrow morning, they’ll be taken away, so what’s the use of doing so much?”

Zhou Yingjie waved his hand without saying a word.

Seeing him like this, Zhou Qiaoqiao also felt uneasy. She really wanted to ask him: If you wanted to be good to me, why did you treat me badly before?

However, Zhou Qiaoqiao knew that this answer was already meaningless. The damage had been done, and it couldn’t be undone.

“I’m hungry, is there any food in the kitchen?” Zhou Qiaoqiao asked.

Zhou Yingjie sat there, his fat body moved slightly, then he turned to look at Zhou Qiaoqiao for a moment and said, “Wait a moment, I’ll make you some noodles!”

Zhou Qiaoqiao sat at the table, watching Zhou Yingjie go into the kitchen. He opened the fridge, took out two eggs, and then some greens and tomatoes.

Zhou Qiaoqiao had a pretty good idea of what kind of noodles Zhou Yingjie was going to make. He had a bit of chauvinism when it came to cooking; he adhered to the idea that gentlemen should stay away from the kitchen and rarely ventured in.

When he had a good relationship with Zhou Qiaoqiao’s mother, Bai Shulan, he did cook. Bai Shulan had health issues and frequently felt unwell, so Zhou Yingjie took over the cooking duties during those times. His cooking skills were not great; he learned to make tomato noodles at a restaurant and then served it at home. It led to a routine of eating tomato noodles every few days.

Although the ingredients were cheap and the meal was repetitive, because the atmosphere at home was good, both Bai Shulan and Zhou Qiaoqiao were quite content.

Zhou Yingjie’s tomato noodles got better and better…

Half an hour later, Zhou Qiaoqiao watched Zhou Yingjie bring out the noodles.

The tomato noodles were the same, just with more ingredients. Perhaps it was because the fridge was now well-stocked.

Zhou Qiaoqiao picked up her chopsticks and silently picked up some noodles…

“Is it delicious?” Zhou Yingjie asked from across the table.

Zhou Qiaoqiao didn’t speak, and neither did Zhou Yingjie. He silently watched her eat for a while, then got up and said, “When you’re done eating, just leave the bowl on the table.” With that, he returned to the living room to continue inflating balloons.

Zhou Qiaoqiao didn’t know why, but as she ate, she became irritated. With a bang, she dropped her chopsticks and hurried back into her room.

Zhou Yingjie glanced at the closed door, then turned his head to look at the steam still rising from the noodles on the table. Ultimately, he remained silent, lowered his head, and continued inflating balloons.

Although I want to hate her father, I also wish she could have one moment with him where they can be at peace with each other. He wasn’t perfect and there’s no way to change the past, but don’t harbor the bad feelings in the future, and maybe go visit her mom’s burial site together 😢 especially since she’s getting married and starting a family of her own…

Their relationship would get somewhat better. It’s a little hard to improve a relationship that has been broken for so many years and the dad doesn’t even realize how much he has hurt her, and how biased he was. She won’t harbor bad feelings against him since he didn’t fight her for changing the household registration. And you know, her family has a tendency to become a leech but the dad is not that thick skinned, so that’s another plus for improving the relationship.

      1. mamaBear01

That’s good to know, I feel so invested in our QQ that I really hope the relationships in her life are in her favor and the antagonists can leave her and YW alone to enjoy their happiness they’re making together

  2. Spinthepickle

I don’t feel bad for him, anymore than I do for YW’s family. It’s amazing to me they keep them in their lives as much as they are. You don’t sacrifice one of your kids to make your life easier. If that’s the only thing a parent think to do or manage to do out of their own selfishness or mental stress, accept the consequences. Don’t expect the child to love and trust you afterwards. Especially in this case where they abandoned them repeatedly as both our protagonists were. Be sad mom, dads and brother. The kids were hurt and sad.

Oh, I haven’t read that but I saw that novel all the time before.

I feel bad for them and him. He’s old, now, and it’s kind of sad to see a lonely old man who wants to but can’t be close to his daughter, but also, he did hurt her a lot so I totally understand and support her keeping her distance. It’s just… kind of melancholy. I’m doing and have done the same to my parents, and I feel bad at times. They’re trying. I can see it, I can tell they really want to mend things, but even with the best intentions, damage has been done. Intentions may be a minor balm, but the damage itself was still damage. Pretty sure it goes both ways too. C’est la vie, I suppose. Perhaps I should visit them.
