Debugging in Book Series

Chapter 14.1

“There will be no one else in this lifetime of mine.”

By the time Jing Xi found Jin Yumeng, she was just done with a body check-up and was currently sipping on some coffee by the window.

Yet, it did not take long for Jin Yumeng to notice him. Hence, she wondered, “What are you doing here?”

Jing Xi answered, “I heard you had an accident.”

Perplexed, Jin Yumeng questioned, “From whom?”

  Jing Xi replied, “Duan Chi.”

For a second, Jin Yumeng thought she had been hallucinating. “Who?”

Just a while ago, their fathers speculated that it was the alarm in Duan Chi’s bracelet that had sounded. Regardless of their attempts, no one could dig up any information about the other party, so who would have expected it to be Yi Zhou? It was no wonder Duan Chi attended the engagement party.

Hesitatingly, she asked, “How’s… your relationship with him?”

  Jing Xi responded, “Rather messy.”

Jin Yumeng let out a faint sound of acknowledgment but did not continue to press the matter.

As conversations traveled through the grapevine, she had heard numerous comments about people wanting to bind themselves to a Lupinus Mutant, as well as how fortunate the person would be to become Duan Chi’s only one. Back then, she would dissent from these views. Now that this had befallen her, it had, all the more, attested to her assumptions.

Everyone should have the freedom to choose whomever they wish to love. Yet, the Lupinus Mutants were deprived of these rights.

Despite her willingness to empathize and cooperate with the sick, it was still hard to swallow the fact that the fate of someone’s life rests on her shoulders. Now, she could only hope for the research institute to find a solution soon, so that she could extricate herself from this situation.

After exchanging a few words about this matter, Jing Xi could tell from her lack of revulsion that she would not choose to separate herself from him entirely.

With that, he remained seated until Duan Chi came over to pick him up. Only then did they make their way to the Lupinus Mutant’s observation room.

The two wolflings had taken their leave judiciously, leaving Duan Xiuwen alone in the room.

At this juncture, his bracelet had stopped ringing. However, the medical AI was still administering medication to him due to his abnormal hormonal level.

Without further conveyance, Jing Xi’s eyes rolled lazily to observe him through the window.

One look was all it took to determine that Duan Xiuwen bore a likeness to Duan Chi. Even so, their temperament differed significantly — Duan Chi was domineering, while Duan Xiuwen was gentlemanly.

With that in mind, Jing Xi’s eyes roved about the room, noticing CEO Duan was about to open the door. “You’re joining me as well?”

Duan Chi fixed him with a look. “What else?”

Jing Xi elaborated, “I heard that there are at least 2 Lupinus Mutants present, so it could be rather dangerous for me.”

Duan Chi assured, “I won’t lay a finger on you.”

Upon hearing that, Jing Xi scrutinized him briefly before deeming that he ought to be reliable and let out a sound of approval.

All this while, Duan Xiuwen could hear their voices as they reverberated through the door. In the silence, the opening door emitted a clear whisper that sent tingling sensations crawling over his scalp. During that lapse of time, he subconsciously held his breath and watched a certain individual enter the room.

Not wishing to stand too closely, Jing Xi stopped approximately two meters from the bed and greeted him with a smile. “Hello.”

  Duan Xiuwen responded, “Hello.”

With a momentary delay, Jing Xi questioned sincerely, “Don’t you find it suffocating to suppress yourself?”

Speechless, Duan Xiuwen threw a sidelong glance at his uncle, only to find that he remained noncommittal.

That was also when he recalled his consent to this meetup. Since he could no longer escape, he made an attempt to take a quick inhale. In an instant, he detected a wisp of scent that was unlike a girl. Suffice to say, his body, whose hormones were already in disarray, instantly set off the alarm in his bracelet.

Perhaps it was due to his mental preparedness, his knowledge of this individual having a likely chance to become his aunt, or the terrifying feeling when his uncle’s eyes burned holes right through him, rendering his mind completely blank.

As such, the ringing persisted for no more than five minutes before coming to a stop swiftly.

In his mind, Jing Xi praised, “Not bad, he has it under control now.”

System boasted, “Of course! Haven’t I told you he is unlike those two who wanted to lick you once?”

From then on, Jing Xi found this male lead rather pleasing to the eye. Hence, he asked Duan Xiuwen about his condition, only to learn that he was still under observation. Yet, he could not help but let his imagination run wild. “This doesn’t seem to differ much since he needs to be hospitalized.”

System refuted, “Now this is normal, alright? It is Duan Chi who is abnormal.”

Jing Xi took this chance to rub it in. “Someone managed to do something the male lead was incapable of doing. Shouldn’t you guys reflect on that?”

“…” System countered, “Why should we reflect on ourselves? In the original storyline, Duan Chi never had to undergo this sort of situation, so the male lead would still retain the title of the Lupinus Mutant with the Swiftest Adaptability. What’s more, he only needed to be under observation for a day, alright?! Since he was taught by Duan Chi, how could you even compare two beings of such contrasting levels? That is not fair to him!”

‘Sure, I suppose,’ Jing Xi thought inwardly.

With the current special circumstances, it did not take him long to decidedly take his leave after making an appearance in the male lead’s presence.

Apart from the necessary treatment, the next step after the transfer to the research station was reaching a consensus on the containment issue.

After receiving an IV drip treatment, he joined Jin Yumeng and the staff member in the meeting room. Initially, Jing Xi was nonchalant about their discussion, but his attempts to rein in the fanatic System failed miserably. Hence, he was informed the second Jin Yumeng decided to cooperate with them.

Recalling the detestable storyline riddled with bugs and the romantic scene it witnessed today, System complimented, “You have done beautifully!”

Jing Xi chuckled, “When have I ever done things otherwise?”

At this juncture, System deemed it unwise to prolong the conversation as it would surely stop functioning. Hence, it judiciously dropped the subject.

With that, they awaited Jin Yumeng’s return. After politely turning down Duan Chi’s offer to send him back, Jing Xi left the research institute with her.

Looking at the time, Jin Yumeng wondered, “Has the event at the sacred tree ended yet?”

Jing Xi’s long eyebrow perked a little as he queried, “You’re still planning to go for it?”

Jin Yumeng answered, “Of course, the event was why I was there in the first place.”

Be that as it may, Jing Xi had no idea whether this was an effect stemming from a psychological suggestion.

However, now that he had involved her in his schemes, he seemed to possess a great deal of patience for her. After instructing System to look into it, he suggested, “I doubt the event has come to an end, so why don’t I join you? I have nothing going on, anyway.”

Jin Yumeng had no intention of convincing him otherwise. After all, her safety would be guaranteed when she had someone by her side, especially when they were still out and about at this time of night.

Jing Xi reminded, “I’m sure you are aware of the fact that the entire planet would be thrown into a huge uproar whenever something happens to the Lupinus Mutants. If those people present today are still in the vicinity, they would probably have possessed hints of curiosity for you. So do you not fear they might congregate around you like they do an exhibition?”
