Chapter 95: “You Are a Rare Gem in This World (II)”

Luan Qiaoqing sat cross-legged on the sofa in her living room, idly swinging her legs as she waited. Finally, the frosted glass door of the shared bathroom slid open.

The boy, shorter than her by a couple of centimeters, limped out slowly. His damp black hair, half-dried, hung down in soft strands, partially covering his eyebrows and eyes, leaving only his delicate nose and lips exposed.

He held a towel in his arms and wore the shirt and trousers she had handed him earlier. They fit him much better than his own oversized clothes. Though his frame was broader than hers, as boys’ naturally were, he filled out the shirt nicely.

Luan Qiaoqing stared for two seconds, stunned, before hopping off the sofa.

Like a mischievous little monkey, she practically bounced over to him, patting him on the shoulder with a grin.
“Didn’t expect you’d look halfway decent once you got cleaned up! Earlier, you were curled up in the corner like a dirty little stray dog.”

Wen Bin wobbled slightly from her pat, his brow furrowing.

Only then did Luan Qiaoqing seem to remember something.
“Oh, you’re injured, aren’t you? I forgot. Come, sit on the sofa—I’ll go find the first aid kit.”

Murmuring to herself, Luan Qiaoqing padded quietly to her room. She returned with a blanket and draped it over him.

After pulling her hand back, she stood there for a few more seconds, watching him.
“Turns out your eyes are really beautiful. So why keep your hair so long? Weird…”

Wen Bin had no idea how long he slept. When he finally opened his eyes, the once-clear sky outside had grown completely dark.

Blinking slowly, his groggy mind struggled to figure out where he was and what time it was.

He shifted slightly and noticed something soft and warm covering him. Confused, he pulled the blanket off and stared at it for a moment. It carried a faint, pleasant fragrance.

“—Oh, you’re awake?”

The movement caught the attention of the girl in the room.

Before Wen Bin could locate the source of the voice, a soft click echoed in the room, and warm light filled the space.

Sitting on a high stool by the circular bar counter that connected the kitchen and dining area was the short-haired girl. Rubbing her eyes, she looked at him.

It took Wen Bin several seconds to recall where he was and why. His body tensed as he held the blanket and prepared to get up.

“Hey, don’t move yet! I haven’t even used the first aid kit I got for you,” the girl said, hopping off the stool. In a few quick strides, she was at his side.

She placed the kit on the table, then perched on the edge of it, her hands resting on her knees, watching him intently.

Wen Bin squirmed under her gaze, feeling uncharacteristically self-conscious in front of someone his age.

They stared at each other silently for several seconds until the girl finally grew impatient.
“Why are you sitting there like a block of wood? If you don’t show me your injuries, how am I supposed to treat them?”

Wen Bin finally understood her intent. For a moment, he hesitated, his face flushing slightly. After a pause, he muttered, “No need.”

“If you’re injured, you need to treat the wound. How can you be so stubborn at such a young age?” The girl put on an exaggerated “I’m the adult, so listen to me” tone, furrowing her brows and glaring at Wen Bin.

Wen Bin couldn’t argue with her. After a few seconds of silence, he slowly extended his arm.

Only then did Luan Qiaoqing relax her frown. She reached over, unbuttoning his shirt and rolling up the sleeve to reveal the bruised area.

“At least it didn’t bleed. If it had, the pain from the scrapes would’ve been unbearable…”

She muttered while taking a bottle of bruise ointment from the first aid kit. Pouring some into her palm, she spread it evenly before carefully applying it to the boy’s arm with practiced movements.

The ointment was cold, but the warmth of her hands gently massaging it in made Wen Bin’s cheeks flush.

Once she finished treating his wound, Wen Bin felt an odd sense of relief. He pulled down his sleeve and stood up.
“Thank you… I’ll wash the clothes and return them to you.”

“No need, that’s too much trouble. I’m not always home anyway.” The girl waved her hand dismissively, exuding a carefree air. After closing the first aid kit, she turned back to him, blinking.
“You’re leaving now?”

“Yeah… thank you.”

Her dark eyes darted about mischievously before she broke into a radiant grin.
“Forget thanking me—do something for me instead.”

Wen Bin hesitated, glancing up at her through his bangs.

She patted her stomach. “Join me for dinner. That’ll settle the debt, alright?”

Wen Bin wanted to refuse. The word “no” was already on the tip of his tongue, but when he met her bright, dark eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to say it.

As if bewitched, he slowly nodded.

Her smile grew even more dazzling. Practically bouncing in place, she spun around and dashed toward the kitchen.
“Wait here! Watch me work some magic!”

Wen Bin: “…”
She was such a small girl, yet her choice of words sounded like they were lifted straight out of some bizarre story.

To be fair, Luan Qiaoqing’s instant noodle cooking skills were… adequate.

At least it was edible.

Although the texture was uneven, with some parts soft and others hard, Wen Bin still managed to finish his entire bowl.
When he set down his chopsticks, he noticed the satisfaction in the girl’s eyes as she sat across from him.

—What a peculiar girl.

That thought crossed Wen Bin’s mind as he slid off the stool by the bar and lowered his head slightly.
“I should go now.”

The girl paused for a few seconds, then nodded with a faintly serious air.
“Alright. Be careful on your way.”

Wen Bin said nothing, walking to the bathroom to retrieve his freshly washed and folded, still slightly damp clothes. Then, he headed for the entryway.

As he bent down to change his shoes, the girl seemed to remember something.
“Wait, let me grab a bag for your clothes.”

Before Wen Bin could refuse, she had already run back to her room.

When she returned with a sturdy bag, the boy was standing quietly under the soft light at the entryway, already wearing his shoes.

She handed him the bag.
“…Thanks.”

He took it, placed his clothes inside, and turned to open the door.

Then, he stepped out.

Luan Qiaoqing lowered her gaze, her smile fading slightly as she waited for the familiar sound of the door closing.

But even after a long while, it didn’t come.

Curious, she looked up to see the boy standing outside with the door open, one hand on the doorknob, his expression hesitant.

She frowned slightly, puzzled.
“What’s wrong?”

The boy remained silent.

The silence stretched for so long that Luan Qiaoqing finally heard him murmur softly:
“Happy birthday.”

She froze.

It took her quite a while to recover from her surprise, and then she slowly broke into a bright smile.
“How did you know it was my birthday today?”

“I saw it on the calendar,” he replied.

Luan Qiaoqing turned her head toward the wall by the entryway, where the day’s date was indeed circled in red, with the words “Daughter’s Birthday” written beside it.

She stared at it for two seconds, then turned back with a grin.
“You’re pretty observant. So, do you realize how lucky you are? If I hadn’t felt like I didn’t want to come back home alone, I wouldn’t have wandered around the school gate for so long. I wouldn’t have seen you, let alone brought you back here.”

The boy pressed his lips together, remaining silent.

“Since you’re so smart, I’ll cover you from now on at school. Remember this: my name’s Luan Qiaoqing, but everyone calls me Sister Qiaoqiao. You can call me that too! If anyone bullies you, just tell them my name!”

“…”

“Why aren’t you saying anything again?” Luan Qiaoqing frowned but then waved her hand dismissively.
“Forget it, I won’t push you. Go home now. Bye!”

“…”

The door closed in front of the boy.

After a long while, the motion-activated hallway light dimmed.

Standing in the darkness, the boy held the bag of clothes against his chest and slowly turned around.

In fact, the moment he saw the circled date on the calendar, he already knew. The girl just didn’t want to spend her birthday alone, didn’t want to have dinner by herself.

If she had come across a stray cat or dog in the rain instead of him, she probably would’ve brought it home too.

Her kindness wasn’t really directed at him; they each got what they needed. By that logic, he didn’t owe her anything.

And yet…

He shuffled forward slowly, murmuring so softly it was almost inaudible,
“Goodbye.”

In the darkness, the motion-activated light suddenly flickered on, illuminating the long corridor ahead of him.

Even though they had said goodbye, neither Luan Qiaoqing nor Wen Bin could have anticipated how soon they would meet again.

It was just a week later, in the cleaning area assigned to Wen Bin’s class.

That morning, Wen Bin was on cleaning duty. As usual, he arrived at school early to tidy up the area. By the time the other students filed into the classroom, he would already be seated inside.

However, that morning during the first half of self-study, someone knocked on the classroom door and called the class hygiene monitor outside. Two minutes later, the hygiene monitor returned with a grim expression and climbed onto the podium.
“Who was assigned to clean the area today? The inspectors said the trash is piling up!”

Wen Bin froze for a moment.

Then he heard a few mocking snickers from the back of the classroom.

After a few seconds of silence, Wen Bin stood up. “I’ll go clean it again.”

He walked to the corner where the cleaning tools were stored, grabbed what he needed, and exited through the back door of the classroom.

What Wen Bin didn’t see was the group of boys at the back of the room exchanging glances. Among them was the one who had been on the receiving end of Wen Bin’s punches before. They quickly stood up and followed him out the back door.

Minutes later, in Wen Bin’s assigned cleaning area.

Next to the pile of garbage—clearly dumped there maliciously—a boy wearing an oversized white shirt was hunched over in pain.

Two boys were pinning his arms down tightly, preventing him from struggling, while a third stood in front of him, raising a foot to kick him in the stomach.

“You dared to hit me? You’ve got a death wish! I insulted you as a favor, but you just had to be ungrateful!”

The boy spat curses with a vicious sneer as he prepared to stomp down again.

Just then, a cheerful voice rang out.
“Hey, senior, why are you fighting again?”

At this hour, most students were in class, and the campus was nearly deserted. The sudden voice startled all three boys, making them freeze in place.

The leader whipped his head around. “Who’s there?”

“Me.”

The voice came from a nearby low wall bordering the cleaning area. Perched on it was a girl with a buzz cut, dressed like a boy.

It was the shortest wall on campus, commonly used as a secret entry and exit point by delinquent students after school gates were locked.

The leader relaxed slightly when he realized it was just a young girl. But as he prepared to curse her away, he paused, staring at her distinctive short hair and the unflinching smile on her face.

After a moment of silence, he asked,
“Are you… Luan Qiaoqing from junior year three?”

“Wow, senior, you’ve heard of me?” Luan Qiaoqing leaned on the wall with one hand and slid down with a hop. She clapped her hands, pretending to dust them off, and then looked up at the boy who was over a head taller than her. She grinned, baring her teeth.
“Yup, that’s me.”

The three boys frowned.

They recognized her as the leader of the so-called “bad girls” group at school. While she and her crew weren’t physically threatening, her family’s reputation was what made them hesitant. It was well-known that her family was well-connected—her aunt, in particular, was highly influential. Rumor had it that when her aunt attended a parent-teacher meeting, even the school administrators had greeted her personally.

In short, unless provoked, they didn’t want to mess with her.

The leader exchanged a glance with the others before saying with a frown,
“This has nothing to do with you, junior. We’re just teaching a brat a lesson.”

“Ah, what a coincidence.”

Luan Qiaoqing playfully clasped her hands behind her back, tilting her head slightly at their words. She leaned to the side to glance at the boy crouched in the corner behind the three of them.

Her eyes curved into crescent moons as she smiled, then she straightened up.

“This clueless kid just so happens to be someone I know. How about you three seniors give me some face and let me handle teaching him a lesson?”

The leader frowned deeply. “You know him?”

Another boy snorted and chimed in, “He’s just a wimp, a model student who walks hugging the walls. How could someone like him possibly know you?”

“Come on, Luan, you can’t fool us like that.”

“I really do know him.”

Luan Qiaoqing blinked innocently, her smile as radiant as ever.
“He’s my boyfriend. We just started dating last week.”

“—???”

The three boys froze simultaneously, exchanging disbelieving looks.

It took over ten seconds for the leader to snap out of it. He sneered at Luan Qiaoqing, “He’s your boyfriend? Yeah, right!”

“Why not?” Luan Qiaoqing replied without a hint of hesitation, her face calm. “I even gave him clothes last week.”

“…” The leader gritted his teeth. “Who knows if you’re just making this up? You could be bluffing us.”

“You don’t believe me? Hmm, let me think of a way to prove it to you.”

As she spoke, Luan Qiaoqing began walking toward the group.

The three boys tensed, their gazes wary as they watched her approach.

She moved past them and stopped in front of the boy sitting in the corner. Squatting down, she grinned at him, carefree and cheerful.
“Hey, boyfriend, how should we prove it to them?”

“…”

Wen Bin slowly lifted his head, giving the bold girl in front of him a complicated look.

After a few seconds of silence, his dry lips moved slightly.
“It’s not your business, you—”

“I’ve got it!”

Her sudden shout startled him, cutting off his low and raspy voice.

Her dark eyes darted quickly, a flicker of emotion passing through them.

Then, gritting her teeth, Luan Qiaoqing leaned forward. Her fair hand pressed against the dirty ground beside him as she closed her eyes and kissed his dry lips.

“…!”

Wen Bin’s words were abruptly silenced.

Under his tousled black bangs, his eyes widened in shock and confusion, filled with disbelief and uncertainty.
