    Chapter 4.1 “Arrogant”

“The main reason is that he was on the night shift last night. He just woke up and was hungry. So, I took him out to buy some meat.” Grandma Chen said, “On weekdays he is very particular about his clothes, and his suits are all made to order. If I had known that we would meet you today, I would have definitely dressed him up like a movie star.”

Zhung Jie couldn’t stop laughing, this old lady was interesting.

Grandma Chen asked her about her job and she answered her straightforwardly. When Grandma Chen heard her say that she had been in Shanghai for many years, her heart jumped, and she lost all hope. Then, she asked her if she had plans to come back later on in life.

Zhuang Jie smiled and shook her head, saying that she had no plan to come back.

Grandma Chen couldn’t hide the disappointment on her face. She reluctantly chatted with Zhuang Jie for a while, and came out with the packed fried chicken. When she saw her grandson waiting at the intersection, her eyes felt hot and achy.  Then she blinked and went next door to line up to buy milk tea. Zhuang Jie was her favorite candidate for a granddaughter-in-law. Before, she only wanted someone to take care of her grandson, but she was vague about that person, and she didn’t have a specific appearance or characteristics. When she met Zhuang Jie today, she felt that her future daughter-in-law should be like her. At first she was happy, now she felt sad…

Chen Maidong came over and asked her why she bought milk tea. Grandma Chen handed him the fried chicken without saying anything.  She bought milk tea and took it to Zhuang Jie, saying that even if she couldn’t be family, it would still be nice to have her as a friend. Before leaving, she praised her a few more times.

Chen Maidong followed grandma silently. He didn’t know what happened, but from her expression it was clear to see that it didn’t work out like she wanted. He took a step forward, touched the back of his head and said, “You just saw her for a second. Maybe she’s not all that you thought she was.”

After thinking for a long time, he tried to comfort her, saying: “Her mother was married late, and her left calf is amputated..”

“That’s why I said you have average eyesight. This girl is very confident. When I introduced you to her, her first reaction was to laugh, but not a girly laugh.” Grandma Chen said: “Forget it, radishes or greens, everyone has their own preferences. It is your life to live.”

He nodded perfunctorily, whatever you say is right. After eating some fried chicken, he changed his clothes and went back to the funeral home.

Grandma Chen sat alone for a while, took out her cellphone to call her son, and asked him for 300,000 yuan. Without saying a word, his son directly transferred 500,000 yuan instead. She went to the bank with her passbook, and she was very relieved after the staff told her the exact amount.

She felt that her energy was not as good as it was in the past. And she needed to start paving the way for her grandson’s future.

Zhuang Jie was so busy it was the evening before she was free.  Looking up, she saw her younger sister, Chen NiaoNiao, half lying in the doorway, only showing her head to look at her. When her younger sister was born, Zhuang Jie was taking college entrance exams. After she was admitted to Shanghai, she would only come back two or three times a year, so the two sisters didn’t really have time to build a sense of intimacy between them. NiaoNiao, however, loved to follow her around like the wag on a tail.

Chen Niao said: “Sister, Mom said for you to go pick up brother.”

“What time is the ticket for Zhuang Yan?” Zhuang Jie asked, wiping her hands. Zhuang Yan was in high school in the city, and he always took the high-speed train back on holidays.

    “Six-Twenty”

Zhuang Jie looked at the time, took off her overalls and said, “It’s almost there.” She got on her motorcycle and was about to go to the station. Then she saw NiaoNiao looking from the door, and asked her, “Do you want to go?”

Chen Niao nodded first, then shook her head, “Brother also has a suitcase, so I won’t be able to fit.”

Zhuang Jie thought for a while, then patted the back seat and said, “Come on, we’ll figure it out once we get there.” Chen NiaoNiao trotted over and climbed onto the back seat.

When Zhuang Yan exited the station, he saw Zhuang Jie waving at him. Zhuang Yan yelled, “Sister!”, and ran over with the suitcase, and said happily, “Mom said you came back for vacation, I thought she was lying!”

“A little fatter, it seems that the school food is good.” Zhuang Jie said and she pinched his face.

Zhuang Yan laughed, saying that it was far inferior to her good cooking.

The three of them went back to the parking lot. Zhuang Jie was a little bit annoyed looking at the suitcase. The motorcycle really couldn’t carry it. She looked around, and when she saw someone familiar, she immediately went over and asked him where he was headed. Hearing he was headed to their town, she asked him if he could take the suitcase to the roast chicken restaurant in the center of the town, on his way.

After dealing with the suitcase issue, she took the two of them directly to the snack bar in the town, ordered a Mala Tang (spicy noodles – kind of like hot pot in an instant noodle version), and a spicy and sour noodle. She drank her milk and watched them eat.

Zhuang Yan asked her why she didn’t eat. She said that she had a bad stomach and needed to avoid food for a while. After eating, the three went home. The courtyard next door was brightly lit, and Liao Tao and a few temporary workers were sealing the vacuum- roasted chickens.

Fifteen boxes of vacuum-roasted chicken were loaded on the trolley. There are 100 pieces in a box, and if the business is good, they will sell out in two or three days. Zhuang Jie wanted to help, but Liao Tao asked her to check the homework of her siblings, especially He Niao, who was really bad at math.

Zhuang Jie asked, “Where’s Uncle He?”

“He had to go out to do something.” Liao Tao said: “You had a busy evening, go rest. We will chat with you when we are finished here.”

Zhuang Jie went back to the room to check He Niaoyou’s homework. NiaoNiao took out a test paper and asked her to sign it. Then she glanced at the score – 79 points. No matter how you look at it, though, it was wrong. The whole paper had only 3 check marks, so how could it be possible to score 79 points.

She didn’t expose He Niao’s little trick, she signed her name on the upper right, and checked each question after signing. When she saw a multiple-choice question and asked to choose the correct answer in ABC, she chose D in the brackets.

Zhuang Jie was puzzled and pointed to the question and asked, “How did you come up with D?”

He Niaoyou looked at it for a long time, then stuck out the tip of her tongue and said, “The question was wrong.”

Zhuang Jie flipped through several previous test papers, one after another. He Niaoyou’s foundation was so poor that she couldn’t do anything about it. Zhuang Yan wrote homework on the side and interjected: “She’s going to be promoted to junior high school soon, and our mom still wants her to study in the city, just with these types of results…”

Zhuang Jie’s brain hurt. She absolutely has no patience for tutoring, and she doesn’t have the time to focus on it. He Niaoyou sat on the sofa and picked her nails, “I want to learn well too, but I can’t understand what the school tutor says.”

“Is the tutoring class big?” Zhuang Jie asked.

“The tutor class is recommended by our teacher, and there are 26 people per class.”

“You can’t do the basic courses in a group.  You have to take one-on-one supplementary lessons, and then you can take the group lessons after you catch up.” Zhuang Jie thought for a while, and then took her motorcycle and took to the streets to find a tutoring institution.
