When she got to the store, Liu Xu’er went in to have a look. Sure enough, Liu Lin could be found here. When he saw his family’s horse carriage, he immediately came out for a look and curiously asked, “Xu’er? Why did you come?”

Liu Xu’er smiled and said, “There’s something I need to tell you.” Then she got the driver to move away.

Seeing this, Liu Lin immediately understood. He came and sat next to her before asking, “Is it…. Mum’s matter?”

Liu Xu’er rolled her eyes at him. “It’s your matter! Why did it become mum’s?” She thought for a moment before smiling and asking, “Erge, tell me. How did you know we had invited Song Yao for our banquet yesterday?”

Liu Xu’er understood. What she had thought before was right. Her erge was very clear. If he didn’t like her, there were many ways to help her. There was no need for him to actually marry her. So she smiled and nodded before sharing that He shi had changed her mind.

Liu Lin was both surprised and delighted. He grabbed her arm and shook it saying. “Really! Mum agreed? Oh… Thank you, you really did me a huge favour!”

Liu Xu’er smiled, “It’s nothing. Since mum wanted to hear my opinion, I just gave her my honest thoughts!”

Liu Lin laughed, but he immediately thought of something, “Anything…. Did mum say anything else?”

“No, she just said to do what you planned to do. She probably meant that if you wanted to invite a matchmaker to propose marriage, to go ahead. But… It would be best if you still discuss your plans with the family first.” As Liu Xu’er spoke, she thought of something else! She had forgotten a matter…. How would her mother account for this with her dajiu? Her dajiu’s family should have known of her mother’s plan to match Xiuxiu with her erge. Now that he was proposing marriage to someone else….

Oh dear. She had completely forgotten this matter earlier…..

Liu Lin had originally been over the moon, but seeing her facial expression change, he started to get nervous. It was as though he had just received his dearest wish, but now someone was threatening to take it away from him. He anxiously asked, “What? Did mum…. Say something else?”

Liu Xu’er quickly shook her head, “It’s nothing, I just thought of something unrelated…. You quickly think up your plan! I’m heading home.”

Liu Lin nodded his head before waving the driver back, while he himself headed back into the store.

When Liu Xu’er got home, Liu Shu had also arrived back. He saw her and smiled, “You are rather busy – what, did you manage to arrange your erge’s matter?”

Liu Xu’er smiled and headed into the courtyard at a run, “There’s still a small issue to wrap up!”

Liu Shu smiled and shook his head. He told the driver not to leave – in a while, he too wanted to head out. Then he headed to his own courtyard and called, “Shao Rong, Shao Rong?”

Shao Rong came out of the house. Seeing him, she asked curiously, “It’s late morning, why are you back?”

Liu Shu waved his hand, “Come, I’m taking you out.”

Shao Rong was puzzled. Liu Shu stood where he was, so she headed out, “Where are we going? What time will we be back? At noon… I need to head over to mum’s room. I still have….”

Liu Shu took two steps forward and grabbed hold of her hand. He smiled and said, “Let’s go, we should be back in two hours.” He looked at what she was wearing – although it was just home clothes, she would be sitting in the carriage and not heading out. So he didn’t bother getting her to change, and pulled her out the door.

Shao Rong was puzzled. In the carriage, she was still asking, “Where are we going?”

    “County office.”

Shao Rong nearly jumped! Stammeringly she said, “Why are we going there? I…. I haven’t changed my clothes.”

“When we get there you will understand. There’s no need to get off the carriage, so don’t worry.” Liu Shu smiled and said.

When Shao Rong heard she wouldn’t be getting down, she finally heaved a sigh of relief. Then she got curious again – why head there if they weren’t getting off?

Very quickly they got to the entrance of the office. It was nearly noon at the time. The carriage stopped at the opposite street. The entrance of county office was already filled with people. When Shao Rong looked over, her eyes got bigger…. She recognised the people standing around – they were from her village!

Shao Rong looked over puzzled at Liu Shu. She was about to ask him what was happening, when a few officials came out of the door. One of them was holding a piece of paper. He opened it and started to read it for the crowd at the door. After listening for a while, Shao Rong was stunned!

The official was reading about two cases that the office had been investigating for the past few days. This was the final judgement. One of them was about Niangou Village Head and his son stealing taxed grain! Shao Rong seemed to have heard that they had stolen two sheng of grain?

Just as she was reeling, she heard the official read out the punishment. The Village Head would lose his post and be beaten 20 times with a board, while his son would receive 30 strokes.

Then they pushed out three people. Two of them were the Niangou Village Head and his son, while the other was the criminal from the other case. The three of them were pushed to the entrance where a long bench had already been prepared. Both of their arms and legs were tied down before the judicial beating was carried out. The sound rang out.

Shao Rong turned to look at Liu Shu, stunned, “Did you do it for…. Did you call me over to see this?”

Liu Shu smiled and nodded. “That’s right. There were a lot of misdemeanors that the Village Head had been found guilty of, but only the charge of stealing taxed grain was sufficient for him to be punished with the board. The rest of the charges – well, forget about it…. But if you’re still not satisfied, I can think about it some more….”

Shao Rong quickly stretched out and grabbed his shoulders as if to stop him from trying anything more. “Satisfied! I am very satisfied… I never thought I would be able to vent like this… You really, forget it. This is enough. Let’s not create any trouble for ourselves?”

Liu Shu saw that she looked very anxious, so he smiled and pulled her into his arms. “Relax, I know what I am doing. I got you to come, to allow you to witness this moment.”

Shao Rong breathed out, “I actually am very satisfied… I have never thought that those two would have today….” Then she lifted the carriage curtain for a look. She couldn’t resist  smiling at the sight.

Liu Shu had no interest in seeing them get beaten. He looked at her – seeing her smile, he too laughed.

    ……

Liu Xu’er had run home to ask her mother about her dajiu, but when she got home, she couldn’t find her. It was only after asking the servants that she found out that her parents had returned for a trip. But they said they had gone to Qianzhuang Village. There was a chance they wouldn’t be back today. There was no need to worry.

When Liu Xu’er heard, she felt a bit embarrassed. Mum had gone back to explain the situation to her dajiujiu, and brought her father along. She sighed – had her mother been very definite when she spoke to her dajiu about this before? If that was the case, it really wouldn’t be easy to explain this now!

But there was no choice about the matter. Liu Xu’er could only sigh.

Everyone in the family slowly started to come home. They had no idea why their parents had suddenly gone back to Qianzhuang Village. Liu Lin had hoped to raise the matter of his marriage today, but he could only wait now. Still, he started to prepare for the marriage proposal. Song Yao was having a hard time at home, and he was very anxious about it.

Liu Xu’er didn’t know what her parents said, but after two days, her parents and dajiujiu came back together. Her parents looked a bit tearful, and so did her dajiu. He had come to bring Xiuxiu home.

He only planned to bring Xiuxiu home. He Zhongzhou and the rest would continue to stay here. When Liu Xu’er heard that, she relaxed. That meant that her dajiujiu wasn’t angry, or at least, not to the extent of breaking off ties. It was just not suitable for Xiuxiu to stay any longer.

Xiuxiu was a bit reluctant. She wanted to stay a few more days, but dajiujiu resolutely brought her home. Without a choice, she could only obey.

When they left, Liu Xu’er felt rather guilty. She gave Xiuxiu lots of gifts. But Xiuxiu didn’t know anything, and had bought herself rather a lot. With such a rich haul, she was actually rather happy. When she left, she had even told Liu Xu’er and Shao Rong to come over when they were free. Actually, Liu Xu’er knew that Xiuxiu was hinting at her to think of a way to let her come back to play again.

Although she wanted to comfort her mother, Liu Xu’er knew that this wasn’t the time. Especially since she was a junior and her dajiujiu was still around. It would be better for her to pretend to know nothing. When her dajiujiu left, Liu Xu’er asked her father quietly what had happened. Liu Changgeng sighed and said, “What else could have happened. Your dajiujiu and his wife are not unreasonable people. Now that your erge has someone in mind, they won’t insist… Of course they are disappointed, and your mother will be sad for some time.”

Liu Xu’er could only sigh, “There’s no choice about this.”

Ohhhh… Good that her uncle’s family is not unreasonable… Now Xiuxiu and Liu Tao are a certainty (or not, but I hope that they will end up together 🤣🤣🤣)

      Thanks for the chapter!!!
