When Shao Rong saw the silver, she was stunned! She had never imagined this would happen. After a moment, her face turned red, and she started to flap her hands, “No, no…. It’s not ok. We can’t accept so much money….”

Liu Shu smiled and placed the silver on the table, saying, “I am just lending this to you. When you’ve the money, you can return it then… Your family is good at growing flowers and all of you work hard. I am sure you will be able to return it. Don’t worry. I am not lending this to you for nothing either. My family has bought so many flowers, and we are all busy. We won’t be able to care for them. You should come by frequently to help us with it. Also, Xu’er wants to make some rose or jasmine powdered whatevers, and said you knew how to do it. You have to teach it to her too.”

Liu Shu was the most honest one amongst his siblings. He wasn’t as persuasive as Liu Lin, nor was he as full of strange ideas as Liu Sen. But he had at least been in business for a few years, and in a debate, would be able to throw out reason after reason. Shao Rong was no match for him! When Liu Shu had finished, her face was red, but she was helpless.

Liu Shu smiled and put the silver in her hand. “Bring it into the house, don’t let passers by see it, and wonder what is going on.”

Liu Shu wasn’t a harsh person by nature, but seeing how shameless this person was, he couldn’t resist mentally scolding him.

The Village Head’s son had never imagined he would be here. After a brief pause, he started to mumble, “Why are you here?”

Liu Shu’s frown deepened. He was about to say something when Shao Rong came out from the kitchen. Seeing the Village Head’s youngest son, her face sank and she said, “Isn’t this the Youngest Uncle from Grandpa Village Head’s family? My ge isn’t at home.”

Liu Shu was stunned. He nearly burst out laughing. Shao Rong had deliberately addressed him as her uncle.

The Village Head’s son was initially delighted to see Shao Rong. But the minute he heard what she said, his face darkened. After a while, he said, “How many times have I told you, I am not your uncle!”

Shao Rong’s face was heavy, “Youngest Uncle, let me repeat. My ge isn’t at home, so it isn’t convenient to entertain you. Please leave.” Then she walked toward the door. She wanted to close it, but was terrified to walk past the Village Head’s youngest. He might try to pull something with her. So after walking a few steps, she stood still again.

Liu Shu had already started to extend his hand to pull her behind his back. He went to stand at the doorway and looked at the Village Head’s son. “Please.”

The Village Head’s son glared at him, and angrily asked Shao Rong, “When is he leaving?!”

Liu Shu coldly sneered and said, “That has nothing to do with you!”

The Village Head’s son stiffened his back and glared at him, but Liu Shu met him, stare for stare. His hand rested on the door, but his entire body was tense, ready to spring into action. A fight might break out at any time! He had to be careful that this person didn’t try to get past him into the courtyard.

Perhaps it was because the Village Head’s son was a coward, or perhaps it was because Liu Shu had made a huge impression the last time, he hesitated for a moment before dejectedly leaving.

Liu Shu didn’t try to close the door after him. Instead, he followed him out, and watched at the doorway for a moment. When the two of them left the Shao family’s courtyard, quite a few villagers noticed. They immediately stopped what they were doing to watch.

The matter from a few days earlier had already spread amongst the villagers. Added to the fact that everyone knew that the Village Head’s youngest had his eye on Shao Rong, everyone was curious what would happen.

On one side stood the Village Head – the most powerful person in the village. The other side was an orphan family – pitiful siblings who had no one to back them up. Although the villagers all sympathised with the Shao family, they were all sure that they would eventually lose. One day, Shao Rong would be taken by the Village Head’s youngest, and a beautiful flower would be wasted on that human trash.

But a few days ago, there was suddenly a reversal of events! A wealthy young master, refined in manner, became the Shao family’s backer! Things had taken a sudden turn. This was more exciting than any play! So the instant they noticed something happening at the Shao family now, quite a few people came to watch.

The Village Head’s son came out first. He was not resigned to his fate. He turned to Liu Shu and asked, “Who the heck are you?! Why are you speaking up for the Shao family?!”

Liu Shu coldly smiled, and ignored his question. He coldly said, “You should stop bullying the weak. You never know when you might bring disaster on your head! As a person, you should know your limits. You are just a little Village Head – even if you can swagger around the village, do you really think no one can control you?”

The Village Head’s youngest son’s face turned purple, then green. He wanted to say something rude, but didn’t quite dare to. After a long pause, he huffed and stalked away.

After making sure that he had left, Liu Shu ignored the spectators and walked back into the courtyard. Again, he didn’t close the door, just sat in the courtyard and invited Shao Rong to have a seat as well. Then he finally took a sip of water.

“When you were alone at home before, has he ever come by like this? Does your brother know about this?” Liu Shu asked.

Shao Rong’s face had been red with embarrassment earlier, but now, it was just flushed with anger. She sat down for a long while, trying to get her rage under control, before finally replying, “If I am alone at home, I would make sure that the door is bolted…. So long as my ge is not at home, jie and I would securely bolt the door. My ge often isn’t at home at night. Nothing has ever happened to my jie and I. The Village Head’s son would seldom ever see the door open, and he’s never behaved this way before…. So boldly coming over.”

Liu Shu nodded his head. He thought to himself that the Village Head’s son was probably quite certain that with his dad’s status, he would definitely get his way – there was no need for him to behave like a hoodlum. Then he thought that this wasn’t a solution. Even if the two sisters were very careful, something might happen unexpectedly.

Another person stuck their head in from the door. Thankfully, it was just a goodhearted aunt. She smiled and asked, “Hey, Shao Rong is at home? There’s a guest? Where is your ge?”

Shao Rong went over and explained clearly. “Ge and jie were both not at home when a guest came by. Aunt, do you want to come in and have a seat?”

The aunt immediately shook her head. Waving, she smiled and went off.

Liu Shu shook his head. He rather regretted not bringing Xu’er along. But now, he was too worried to just leave! What if the Village Head’s son came back?

Shao Rong had been very embarrassed when she took the silver, but now, it was her turn to be magnanimous. Seeing him deep in thought, brow furrowed, she knew what he was worried about. She said, “Don’t worry Liu Shu ge. Since we are doing nothing wrong, we’ve nothing to fear. We are being very transparent – I even kept the door open. I’m not afraid of what others might see!”

Liu Shu gently smiled and nodded. Then he said, “That’s right, where is Yang Youbang’s home?”

Shao Rong quickly responded, “They stay toward the west. From the courtyard door, there is a little road at the back. You can get to their place in about 15 minutes along that road.” Then he asked, “Are you looking for him? Do you want me to call him?”

Liu Shu quickly shook his head, “No need, I will just wait.”

Shao Rong nodded and the two of them waited like this, with the door wide open. What Liu Shu didn’t expect was that the wait would stretch to nearly night time, and still, there was no sign of Shao Huai.

Shao Rong had long ago started to worry. She stood up and started to pace around the courtyard. From time to time, she would head to the door to check. Worried that she would leave the safety of the house in her worry, Liu Shu smiled and told her to prepare the meal. He told her he planned to join them for the meal. Although Shao Rong knew that he was just saying that to comfort her, she couldn’t disagree with the suggestion. She could only head in to start to cook.

Finally, just before the sky had darkened completely, Shao Huai and Shao Gui got back. Because they needed to transport flowers for their family business, they too owned a little donkey cart. When Liu Shu heard the sound of wheels stopping at the door, he knew they had returned.

Sure enough, he soon heard Shao Huai shout from outside. “Shao Rong?! Why is the door open? Whose cart is this?” He hadn’t even secured his own cart when he jumped down and ran in.

The instant he came in, he saw Liu Shu standing there smiling. Shao Huai heaved a sigh of relief. “Oh, so Shu has come… Oh, you should have a seat. Let me go and tie up the donkey….” Then he ran back out. In a while, Shao Gui came in. She quickly smiled and greeted Liu Shu.

Liu Shu smiled and nodded. Seeing that night was about to fall, he was anxious. He waited for Shao Huai to enter before quickly saying. “Don’t close the door yet. Let me head out first… I need to rush back. When I left, I didn’t say anything to anyone. My family will be getting worried.”

Shao Huai was stunned, “Have a meal with us first! After the meal, I will send you back!”

Liu Shu smiled and waved him off, “It’s alright – there’s no need to send me! However, Shao Huai, in future, you should try never to let your mei be alone at home. Even if urgent matters pop up, you should bring her along – don’t leave her alone….”

Shao Huai was shocked, “Did something happen?”

Liu Shu nodded, “The Village Head’s youngest came by. Nothing happened – he just said a couple of sentences before leaving…. I really do need to make a move. You should ask your sister for the details!”

The sky was about to turn completely dark and Liu Shu needed to hurry home. Without waiting for Shao Rong to come back out, he bid Shao Huai farewell and hurried home in his cart.
