The Second Year After Marriage

Chapter 6: Discovery

Wen Yang was startled and asked worriedly, “Honey, how did you get so soaked?”

Cheng Yanyu lifted his gaze, his hair damp at the forehead. A drop of water fell from his hair, landing near his nostrils. For a moment, his eyes seemed lost, deeply confused, followed by a wave of guilt and pain that he tried to suppress.

However, Wen Yang didn’t fully notice this. She only saw his disheveled appearance and the puddles of water on the floor. Realizing what was happening, she quickly turned around and rushed into the bedroom to grab a large towel. She moved quickly and draped it over his head. When the towel touched him, it was as if he had finally regained movement.

He allowed her to wipe him off, single-handedly bringing his suitcase inside. With a loud “bang,” the door slammed shut and automatically locked.

Wen Yang furrowed her brows, standing on tiptoe while wiping him, and softly asked, “What happened? How did you get so wet?”

She looked at his eyes through the towel. Cheng Yanyu lowered his head, meeting her gaze. Despite being drenched, his lips seemed dry, and he spoke after a long pause, “It started raining heavily when I got off the car. I didn’t bring an umbrella, so I had no choice but to get soaked.”

Wen Yang immediately understood. The rain had come suddenly. She wiped his ear and said, “You should have let the car take you to our underground parking.”

“I didn’t think about it at the time,” he replied.

From the very beginning, he was fiery and intense, his hands hot. Wen Yang clung tightly to his neck, and as they changed positions, he embraced her from behind, kissing her shoulder gently, planting soft kisses there.

His lips trembled slightly, and Wen Yang reached behind to hold him, turning her head to look at him. The moment their eyes met, he flinched.

For a brief moment, Wen Yang felt like something was slipping away. He was intense, as usual, his body scorching, but it seemed as if he was trying too hard to immerse himself in the moment.

Trying so hard to please her.

Women are naturally sensitive and have an intuition. For some reason, Wen Yang felt sadness in her heart. She leaned down, resting on his sides, burying her head against his neck.

She opened her eyes, and mist seemed to rise in her gaze.

This long-awaited intimacy after their brief separation eventually left only sweat and the coolness of their skin after it.

A long while passed.

Wen Yang lay on the bed, the blanket covering her waist.

Cheng Yanyu got off the bed and went into the bathroom, coming out with a hot towel to wipe her back. Wen Yang felt his gentleness, clutching the bedsheet tightly beneath her hands.

The room was warm, the curtains drawn tightly, and dim light filtered in from the nightstand.

Wen Yang felt him wiping her back, then lowering his head to kiss her smooth skin gently. But Wen Yang’s mind was clouded with thoughts, and she only buried her head in silence.

Her heart was screaming.

Has he changed?

Has he changed?

Was the way he flinched earlier just an illusion?

Why didn’t she feel any pleasure?

Why?

The words she had pushed away from her mind returned, digging into her thoughts like millions of ants. The kisses on her back and the warm towel had disappeared, but Wen Yang pretended to be asleep. As she lay there, under the flickering light, she turned her head slightly.

Cheng Yanyu sat on the edge of the bed, wearing only a pair of pants, holding the towel in one hand, propped up by the bed with the other. He seemed lost in thought. He was still handsome and tall, his figure imposing, yet there was an inexplicable sense of melancholy.

And he…

Before, when she was by his side, he never felt lonely.

Wen Yang quietly watched him, but he didn’t notice that she was awake. So, one of them sat while the other lay, in complete silence. Wen Yang didn’t know what expression she was wearing. She turned her head back to lie on the bed, clutching the corners of the pillow tightly with both hands.

A long time passed.

Cheng Yanyu finally moved, barefoot, carrying the towel into the bathroom to hang it up. He then returned to the bedside, grabbed a shirt, and put it on. He sat on the edge of the bed and gently patted Wen Yang’s head.

His palm was warm, and Wen Yang, buried in the pillow, felt her eyes grow hot. She gritted her teeth.

She wanted to ask him something.

But she didn’t know where to start.

What if it was all just an illusion?

She rubbed the pillow, trying to calm her emotions. She lifted her head and looked up at him from below. He was leaning against the headboard, his figure casting a shadow over the dim light. Wen Yang asked, “Are you hungry?”

Cheng Yanyu, probably not expecting her to be awake, looked down at her and smiled. “Hungry.”

Wen Yang gazed at his eyes, sat up, and said, “Then I’ll go make dinner. What do you want to eat?”

She was about to get out of bed when Cheng Yanyu reached out and put his arm around her waist. “Anything.”

Wen Yang put on her slippers, grabbed her home clothes, and wore them right in front of him without hiding anything. She tied her hair into a bun and turned to ask him, “You’ve been drinking the whole time, right?”

Cheng Yanyu looked at her and nodded.

Wen Yang nodded in return, then walked out. The rain outside had lessened, but it was still falling lightly, tapping on the window sill, almost like a melody. Wen Yang entered the kitchen, put on an apron, and took out ingredients from the fridge. She placed them on the counter and began preparing. The vegetables were from Cheng Yanyu’s mother, and during his business trip, she had sent a large box filled with vegetables and fruits.

Cheng Yanyu turned off the lights in the room and came out. He watched her busy in the kitchen. She hadn’t changed much. If there was any change, it was probably that she seemed a bit more feminine.

He watched her for a while, then walked in to help.

After dinner, it was still early, but the rain outside had started to intensify.

Wen Yang, having cooked, now smelled of a little oil and smoke. She decided to take a shower. After about twenty minutes, she came out, drying her hair. Cheng Yanyu was busy sorting through his wet luggage.

Wen Yang couldn’t help but think back to his messy appearance when he came in, and she found herself unable to stop thinking further.

She quickly pushed the thought away. Outside, in the living room, her phone received a message. She went out to check it. It wasn’t anything important, just a notification about a bank fee deduction.

She sat down, curled up in the corner of the sofa.

Her fingers slid across the screen, hesitating for a moment, before opening Baidu.

“How to tell if a husband has changed…”

The first suggestion that popped up was “How to tell if a husband is cheating.”

Wen Yang paused for a moment, then quickly withdrew her finger.

Just then, Cheng Yanyu finished sorting his luggage, carrying his laptop out. Wen Yang closed Baidu, and he sat down next to her, opening his computer to check it. He was wearing a white T-shirt and long pants, typing on the keyboard. Wen Yang watched him and, without thinking, bent her knee and moved closer, leaning against his shoulder to look at his screen. “Is it broken?”

Cheng Yanyu instinctively reached out to hold her, one hand still on the keyboard. “It should be fine. It didn’t get rained on. It just bumped the ground when I got off the car, and the laptop bag fell.”

Wen Yang said “Oh” and buried her head into his neck, suddenly feeling very helpless.

She wanted to forget those sensitive details. She wanted to keep moving forward, to continue with him for a long time. She hoped everything was just her imagination, that everything was just an illusion.

The weather wasn’t good.

Since that Monday, it had been stormy and windy, and after two days, it was still the same. During these two days, Cheng Yanyu had returned early from work and even came home for dinner.

The long-missed days seemed to be returning to normal.

Wen Yang felt a little happy.

That evening, with thunder and lightning, Wen Yang curled up in Cheng Yanyu’s arms, trying to avoid the loud thunder. Cheng Yanyu pulled the blanket up, covered her ears with one hand, and rested his chin on her forehead, softly comforting her. Wen Yang, lulled by his tenderness, gradually felt sleepy. The scent of the aromatherapy in the room and the warmth of his palm were like a lullaby.

Everything felt like a soothing song.

The room was quiet.

A faint flash of lightning slid across the tightly closed curtains, signaling the fury of the thunderstorm outside. The entire city was engulfed in this extreme weather. Cheng Yanyu’s gaze followed the white lightning without changing his expression, though he seemed slightly lost in thought. After a long while, he ran his fingers through Wen Yang’s long hair, pulled the blanket off, got out of bed, and left the room.

Wen Yang was deeply asleep, nestled in the warm, soft blankets. However, a particularly intense flash of lightning struck, and she slid down under the covers, suddenly waking up. Another flash of lightning followed, and Wen Yang saw that no one was beside her. She froze for a few seconds, then instinctively sat up and searched for him. The bathroom was clear, the door was open, and the light wasn’t on.

She pulled off the blanket and walked out into the living room, where she saw Cheng Yanyu standing facing the balcony, holding his phone and talking.

He didn’t look up, just stood there holding the phone, seeming to hesitate.

For a long time.

He dialed a number and held the phone to his ear.

Someone on the other end answered, though Wen Yang couldn’t hear what they said. Cheng Yanyu spoke, “It’s raining. This heavy rain and lightning, I’m a bit worried about you, so I called to check on you.”

Wen Yang stood right behind him, and despite the deafening thunder and lightning, she could clearly hear his voice and the tone. It was humble, as if he didn’t dare disturb the other person but couldn’t help calling her.

“Mm, I know. The weather has been bad these days. Remember to bring an umbrella when you go out.”

“Don’t drink coffee so late.”

“Do you have milk? Warm it up.”

His gentle voice came through, each word coming carefully, as if he were kneeling on the ground while making this call. Wen Yang’s whole body trembled as she held onto the doorframe.

It seemed like everything had been confirmed.

The sensitivity, the details, the changes — they were not just her imagination.
