The Second Year After Marriage

Chapter 49: Mm, My Yangbao

The kiss was deep, time forgotten. Wen Yang trembled slightly. Fu Xingzhou finally pulled away a little, looking at the woman beneath him. Wen Yang’s eyes were misty as she looked back at him. He lowered his head again and captured her lips once more.

Today, Wen Yang wore a soft beige blouse, and the knot at the collar had come undone, creating a slightly disheveled beauty. Fu Xingzhou tightened the hand around her waist. It took a long while before he finally pulled away, brushing her lips, his voice hoarse: “Feel better?”

Wen Yang had one arm hooked around his neck and nodded.

A lot of the emotions that had been weighing her down had eased. Fu Xingzhou ran his fingers through her hair. The clip at the back of her head seemed uncomfortable, so he took it off for her. Her long hair cascaded down. Ever since she started working, Wen Yang rarely wore her hair down. Most of the time, she tied it up — even if it didn’t make her look more professional, it at least looked tidy.

“I just remembered something.”

Wen Yang felt like this posture wasn’t suitable for having a conversation. His face was too close to hers, and with one button of his shirt undone, his masculine aura was enveloping her. Fu Xingzhou chuckled and gently pulled her up.

Fortunately, Wen Yang’s skirt was loose. She sat cross-legged, her wavy hair draped over her shoulders.

Fu Xingzhou looked at her. “Go ahead.”

Wen Yang shook her head. “It wasn’t really what she said that affected me. It was seeing her face-to-face for the first time. Actually, before I met you, I had seen her once — that was during my most painful time, in a café. She was so composed, while I was there crying. So seeing her again pulled me right back to that state, and that’s what affected me.”

“I was really angry. I wanted to yell at her, to fight, but in the end, I didn’t say anything.”

Fu Xingzhou looked at the Wen Yang in front of him. He understood her kindness, her helplessness, and her pain — like the first time he saw her, teetering on the edge, and the second time, still so broken.

That’s why he sat with her in that barbecue place he usually never went to and drank a few glasses with her — and even had Jiang Yue stay behind to make sure she got home safely.

At that time…

Compassion and pity had already taken root.

Fu Xingzhou reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her into his arms. Wen Yang still held the pillow as she leaned into him. Fu Xingzhou wrapped an arm around her waist and looked down, saying, “Next time you run into her, say whatever you need to say.”

But he knew — Li Man wouldn’t just randomly bump into Wen Yang without a reason.

Now that Wen Yang had gotten everything off her chest, she felt much better. She murmured, “She thinks I agreed to be with you just to get revenge on her.”

Wen Yang looked up at him. “What do you think?”

Fu Xingzhou met her eyes and said, “Weren’t you always so polite to me before? Calling me ‘President Fu’ this, ‘thank you’ that, ‘sorry to trouble you’… If you had really been trying to get close to me, that wouldn’t have been your approach.”

Wen Yang blinked. “So what is the usual approach for women trying to get close to you?”

Fu Xingzhou raised an eyebrow. “Trust me, you wouldn’t want to know.”

Wen Yang: “Alright then.”

“What about you?”

Was it really revenge?

Fu Xingzhou nudged her nose gently and said in a low voice, “I had no feelings for her.”

Which meant revenge wasn’t even on the table.

Wen Yang listened and said, “Exactly.”

At the beginning, she had simply wanted to try — to have a new future. It was because he made her feel safe. It had nothing to do with anyone else. She relaxed into his arms, starting to feel a little lazy.

Seeing that her mood had improved, Fu Xingzhou grabbed his phone, tapped on Jiang Yue’s profile, and sent him a message. Then he put the phone down, leaned in, and kissed her on the lips.

Wen Yang tilted her head up to kiss him back. Before long, it turned into a tangle of tongues. Fu Xingzhou tilted her chin up and kissed her deeply. Their silhouettes were reflected in the floor-to-ceiling windows, and Wen Yang’s heart was pounding fast.

Just then—

Wen Yang’s phone rang. Fu Xingzhou let go of her. She sat up, her long hair a mess. She grabbed her phone and glanced at the screen. It was a call from Yu Qing.

She smoothed her hair and answered, “Yu Qing, what’s wrong?”

“Hi, are you a friend of the phone owner?”

Wen Yang immediately recognized it was a man’s voice and said, “Yes. Where is she?”

“Oh, I’m the owner of a bar. Your friend’s drunk at the bar. She’s alone, and I’m worried something might happen to her here, so I’m calling you. Can you come pick her up?”

Wen Yang sat up straight and said, “Yes. Please send me the address.”

“It’s called Blue Note, 32 Nankang Road.”

“Blue Note,” that sounded like it was near the Yage residential complex — very close by. Wen Yang said, “Thank you. Please help me keep an eye on her for now.”

“Don’t worry, we’re a legit bar.”

Wen Yang agreed.

After hanging up the call, she turned to Fu Xingzhou. “I need to go pick up Yu Qing. She’s drunk.”

Fu Xingzhou said, “I’ll take you.”

Wen Yang nodded.

She tied up her hair while Fu Xingzhou took her hand and grabbed the car keys. The two of them headed downstairs. His shirt collar was a bit open, and he reached up to button it.

The black car started up and headed toward Blue Note.

Wen Yang sat in the passenger seat, tidying her clothes slightly. Her lips still held some warmth; her tongue tingled faintly. The car pulled up in front of the Blue Note Bar, which was tucked behind the back entrance of the Yage complex.

There was parking available out front.

Wen Yang got out of the car.

Fu Xingzhou accompanied her inside. As soon as they walked in, they spotted Yu Qing sitting on the couch, still drinking. When she saw Wen Yang, she immediately waved. Wen Yang went over and grabbed her hand. Yu Qing was drunk. She grinned at Wen Yang and said, “You’re here, Yangbao.”

Wen Yang brushed her hair aside gently. “I’m here. You still want to drink? If you do, I’ll drink with you. If not, let’s go home.”

Yu Qing looked up at Wen Yang and giggled again. “Can’t draw anything at home.”

Wen Yang spoke softly, “You’re overthinking it. That’s why you can’t draw. You’ve vented with some drinks tonight — maybe tomorrow it’ll come to you.”

Yu Qing blinked. “Really?”

Wen Yang nodded. “Really.”

“Let’s go home, okay?” Wen Yang asked gently.

Yu Qing listened, then thought for a moment. “If I go home… I’ll be able to draw?”

“Of course.”

“Alright then.”

Fu Xingzhou stood nearby, watching them. When he saw that Wen Yang had calmed Yu Qing down, he called the bar owner over to settle the bill. His voice was clear and cool. “Could you get someone to help support her — preferably a woman.”

The bar owner took one look at the tall man in front of him and the luxury car parked at the entrance and instantly realized this wasn’t an ordinary customer. He quickly replied, “Of course.”

He turned to go call someone.

A moment later, a female bartender arrived to help Wen Yang support Yu Qing. Yu Qing leaned against Wen Yang, still murmuring, “Yangbao, Yangbao…”

Wen Yang held her close, responding with a soft voice, comforting her gently.

Fu Xingzhou stood to the side, listening and looking down at her.

Wen Yang, who was coaxing Yu Qing like a child, met Fu Xingzhou’s gaze. Her ears turned slightly red. “What are you looking at?”

Fu Xingzhou’s lips curved slightly. “Mm, Yangbao.”

Wen Yang’s face flushed even hotter. “She doesn’t usually call me that, only sometimes.”

Fu Xingzhou smiled and opened the car door.

He let Wen Yang and the bartender help Yu Qing into the back seat. Wen Yang bent down and got in with her to take care of her. Fu Xingzhou shut the door. The female bartender glanced up at him — unintentionally, but with a trace of deliberate curiosity.

Fu Xingzhou paid her no mind. He walked around the car, opened the driver’s door, bent down, and got in, starting the engine.

The black sedan drove off.

They arrived at Yage.

They placed Yu Qing in the master bedroom. Wen Yang’s back was slightly damp with sweat. She straightened her messy hair, left the bedroom, and headed to the door, where Fu Xingzhou was waiting for the elevator.

Wen Yang looked at his back. “Fu Xingzhou.”

He raised an eyebrow and looked at her.

Wen Yang leaned on the doorframe. “Drive safe.”

Fu Xingzhou nodded.

The elevator was taking a while to arrive.

He looked at her for a few seconds, then stretched out his hand. “Come here.”

Wen Yang stepped away from the doorframe and walked over. She stood on tiptoe and wrapped her arms around his neck. Fu Xingzhou smiled and pulled her close by the waist. With his other hand, he held the back of her head and said, “Go to bed early. Don’t say one thing and do another.”

Wen Yang’s face burned a little.

How did he know she always tricked him?

Wen Yang whispered, “Same goes for you — go to bed early. You’re not allowed to say one thing and do another either.”

Fu Xingzhou said, “My routine is consistent. You can check.”

Wen Yang gave a small cough.

Fu Xingzhou chuckled softly.

The elevator finally arrived.

He kissed her forehead, then let her go.

Wen Yang’s face was hot. She stood outside the elevator and watched him step in — and didn’t look away until the elevator doors closed.

Wen Yang stood in the hallway for a while, then turned around and went back inside. She closed the door and entered the master bedroom to check on Yu Qing. Yu Qing was hugging a pillow and sound asleep. Her laptop was sitting on the nightstand, the screen still glowing.

Wen Yang pulled the blanket up to cover her properly. She planned to put the laptop away — the light was glaring and uncomfortable. When she turned to pick it up, she saw that it was playing a slideshow.

Photo after photo passed by, and many of them featured Xu Xu.

Wen Yang glanced at Yu Qing.

She was probably still caught up in her feelings — unsure whether she liked Xu Xu — which was likely why she hadn’t been able to finish her drafts the past couple of days. Wen Yang sighed, took the laptop out, and placed it on the coffee table.

Only then did she grab her pajamas and head to the shower.

The next day at Mengbai Studio.

At this hour, no clients had arrived yet.

Li Man, in high heels, was holding a meeting with the designers. Arms crossed and brows raised slightly, she was listening to their discussion when a shop assistant at the entrance greeted someone: “Welcome.”

Li Man turned to look.

And happened to see Jiang Yue.

Jiang Yue, carrying a briefcase, smiled and said, “Miss Li, business seems to be going well.”

Li Man was caught off guard for a second, then smiled back. “Assistant Jiang, what brings you to the studio today?”

“Just passing by,” Jiang Yue replied. He glanced around at the other people in the studio. Li Man noticed and asked, “Did you need something from me?”

“It’s nothing major. Just wanted to have a quick chat — President Fu asked me to pass along a few words.”

Li Man felt a sudden thud in her chest.

She kept her expression calm. Surrounded by her employees at Mengbai, she maintained a smile. “Let’s talk in my office then, Assistant Jiang.”

She pushed open the office door.

Jiang Yue smiled and stepped inside.

“What would you like to drink?” Li Man asked as she walked to the coffee machine.

Jiang Yue replied, “It’s only a few words, no need for the trouble.”

Li Man picked up a cup and turned around, looking at Jiang Yue.

Jiang Yue looked at her and smiled faintly. “Miss Wen is a kind and simple person. President Fu cares about her quite a bit. She’s also not very good at socializing. If there’s no need, Director Li, it might be best to keep your distance from Miss Wen.”

Li Man’s fingertips tensed.

From the moment Jiang Yue entered, she had already guessed the purpose of his visit.
