Chapter 67: Madam is Awesome

At the medical center, when Shen Chuyan received the identification report, his hands trembled uncontrollably.

He had taken both Shen Nian Nian’s blood and his own to the medical center for testing. Now, the test results were inside the envelope in his hands.

He didn’t dare to open it.

He recalled the year Shen Nian Nian was kidnapped—he was only ten years old. At the police station, their mother rushed forward in a panic, hugging his sister, who had narrowly escaped danger. Their father rubbed his hands together, his eyes red with emotion. Meanwhile, Shen Chuyan stood by the door, gazing at his younger sister from afar.

In her dark eyes, he saw a trace of unfamiliarity.

A child’s intuition is often accurate. The first time he saw Shen Nian Nian, an intense feeling of rejection and alienation rose in his heart.

The whole family happily returned to the mansion, with Shen Chuyan trailing behind. Watching Shen Nian Nian perched on their father’s shoulders, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off—like his sister had been replaced.

Although she looked almost identical, at least ninety percent similar, Shen Chuyan was certain that she wasn’t the same little sister.

Even as a child, Shen Chuyan was quite stubborn. But he knew better than to tell his parents about his suspicions, confiding only in Aunt Chen.

“Aunt Chen, I saw Nian Nian secretly dump the celery from her bowl. I remember she used to love your celery and beef dumplings.”

“Aunt Chen, Nian Nian is so clumsy now. I tried teaching her the multiplication table—she used to recite it fluently, but now she doesn’t remember any of it.”

“Aunt Chen, I just heard Nian Nian bullying a kitten in the yard. She told it to die. Aunt Chen, I’m a little scared. She’s not my sister. She never acted like this before. That cat used to be her favorite pet.”

As a confused child, Shen Chuyan shared many of his observations with Aunt Chen. But she always reassured him, saying that Nian Nian had been traumatized, that she had watched Nian Nian grow up—how could she not recognize her?

Until one day, the family’s beloved orange cat, “Little Stone,” went missing.

Shen Chuyan had found Little Stone as a kitten in the small garden behind his kindergarten. He and Shen Nian Nian had raised it together with great care.

Back then, Aunt Chen had said, “Give it a rough name—it’ll be easier to raise.”

So Shen Chuyan named it “Little Stone.” After two years, the cat had grown into a sweet and affectionate companion. Shen Nian Nian adored it.

When the cat went missing, Shen Chuyan was heartbroken for a long time. Aunt Chen comforted him, saying, “A stray cat will never truly be tamed. It must have run away on its own.”

But one day, while cleaning the flower beds, the gardener found the cat’s corpse.

It had been stabbed multiple times with a sharp object. Its eyes were gouged out. It had been buried in the flower bed for at least half a month.

Aunt Chen never let Shen Chuyan see Little Stone’s body. She didn’t even dare to tell him what had happened.

Later, Shen Chuyan overheard the gardeners talking—and that’s how he learned the truth about the orange cat’s fate.

It was said that before it died, the poor cat had been subjected to extremely cruel abuse—its eyes were gouged out, it was stabbed several times, and its tail was even cut off.

“Who in their right mind would do something so perverse? Could it have been someone in the family?”

The servants were certainly too scared to do something like that. After all, this cat was the young master’s most beloved pet. Besides, they were all adults, busy working to earn money for the family—who would go around antagonizing an animal like that without reason?

The servants all discussed the matter amongst themselves. They speculated that this incident was most likely the doing of that eccentric young miss. Ever since she returned, she had clearly shown a strong dislike for Little Stone—often yelling at it, even kicking it, and telling it to go die.

The servants discussed the issue privately, their voices abuzz with speculation.

However, Aunt Chen had never agreed with this account. Her mood grew heavier day by day. When Shen Chuyan complained about the misdeeds his “sister” had committed, she no longer urged him to let his sister off as she had in the past. In fact, she had stopped discussing the matter altogether.

Whenever Shen Chuyan complained that Shen Nian Nian had turned bad, Aunt Chen would quickly cover his mouth, shake her head, and urge him to stop talking.

The discovery of the orange cat’s corpse in the backyard had shrouded the entire mansion in an indescribable atmosphere of terror.

One day, while Aunt Chen was massaging Fan Yachen, she overheard Fan Yachen talking about her daughter with a face full of worry: “Today I met with Nian Nian’s homeroom teacher. The teacher said that she is no longer suited for the honors class, and suggested that she be moved to the regular class—or even demoted a level. But Nian Nian used to be so smart. How can she be demoted now?”

Advertisements

Aunt Chen replied, “Yes, I remember Nian Nian was very smart—even at a young age she could recite the multiplication table and Tang poems.”

Fan Yachen continued, “I can’t understand it. The teacher said her foundation is too weak, that she simply can’t keep up with the honors class. How is that possible? I remember when Chuyan taught her the multiplication table, she could even speak some basic English. I even taught her to play the piano… My daughter is very outstanding. How could she possibly fall behind in an honors class?”

Aunt Chen hesitated for a moment before cautiously saying, “Madam, do you think it’s possible… that the police got the wrong person?”

“How could that be!” Fan Yachen exclaimed in alarm. “She is Nian Nian! They look exactly alike, and she even calls me ‘Mom’! How could it be a mistake?”

Aunt Chen quickly laughed and said, “Yes, madam, I was just speaking off the cuff. Although a parent–child DNA test hasn’t been done, there’s no mistake—she and Nian Nian look exactly the same.”

Fan Yachen frowned and turned to look at Aunt Chen. “When we brought Nian Nian home from the police station, she was terrified and emotionally unstable. The police recommended a blood test for DNA, just in case. But when we took her to the hospital, Nian Nian screamed that she didn’t want her blood drawn and said she was scared—she nearly fainted. We were relieved to have our child back, and we pitied her for having gone through so much. So we let it go. After all, she recognizes me as her mom. Is it really possible for there to be two children in this world who look exactly alike?”

“Yes, yes, yes—I was just rambling. Madam, please don’t worry about it.”

Of course, Fan Yachen truly didn’t let it bother her.

Two weeks later, something happened that was neither a huge scandal nor a trivial matter.

Shen Nian Nian fell down the stairs at home, her head battered and bleeding profusely. The stairs had just been cleaned by Aunt Chen—the water was still wet.

Shen Nian Nian was immediately sent to the hospital. In the aftermath, no one at home blamed Aunt Chen—after all, she had been taking care of Shen Chuyan for so many years.

But Aunt Chen couldn’t shake her guilt. She felt that she had failed in watching over the young miss properly, which had led to her fall. As a result, she tendered her resignation to Fan Yachen.

Aunt Chen’s departure caused Shen Chuyan immense pain. After all, she had been there for him throughout his childhood; in a sense, she was his family.

On the day Aunt Chen left, Shen Chuyan clutched her clothing tightly, crying and throwing a fit. Aunt Chen herself was tear-streaked as she got into the car.

Before leaving, she leaned in close to his ear and whispered, “Young master, you must promise Aunt Chen never to say that she isn’t your sister. Please, never say that again. Promise me that you will get along well with your sister in the future, and not upset her…”

Shen Chuyan cried so hard he could barely catch his breath—and of course, he promised everything.

Aunt Chen left with a look of reluctant sorrow and lingering worry, and after a long sigh, she departed.

Shen Chuyan then turned around and saw Shen Nian Nian standing behind Fan Yachen, expressionlessly staring at him.

In her gaze, Shen Chuyan thought he saw a glimmer of triumphant, cunning satisfaction.

He was nearly convinced that it was all Shen Nian Nian’s doing—that she had orchestrated everything to drive Aunt Chen away!

As time passed and Shen Chuyan grew up and matured, the doubts and resentments he had harbored in childhood gradually faded away. He learned to be tolerant and forgiving, and he learned to care and love.

He never doubted Shen Nian Nian again—never, until… today.

Today, holding the unopened identification report in his hands, memories from the past flooded back—memories of Aunt Chen’s departure, of Little Stone the orange cat’s death…

Cold sweat began to form on Shen Chuyan’s back. He finally understood the words Aunt Chen had spoken to him as she left, urging him never to upset his sister and never to say that Shen Nian Nian wasn’t his sister.

Not because she wanted to teach him the noble virtues of fraternal respect, but because… Aunt Chen was worried about him!

She was afraid that Shen Chuyan, like Little Stone, might one day face retaliation from Shen Nian Nian.

Shen Chuyan also understood that, as a humble and low-ranking nanny, Aunt Chen had no right to question the identity of the Shen family’s young miss. As long as Shen Sushan and Fan Yachen recognized Shen Nian Nian as their daughter, then she was who she was.

That was why Aunt Chen chose to leave.

Now, nearly thirty years old, Shen Chuyan clutched the heavy identification report and walked unsteadily out of the hospital.

He was no longer the naive child he once was—he now possessed the courage to face the truth.

Shen Chuyan then broke the seal on the identification report.
………

That very evening, Shen Nian Nian returned home in high spirits. She rushed into Shen Chuyan’s room and shouted, “Brother, I’ve already told all my friends that you’ll invite tons of celebrities to my birthday party…”

“Eh?”

The room was completely empty—there was no one there.

Shen Nian Nian glanced at her watch. It was already 10 o’clock at night. Normally, by this time, Shen Chuyan would have been home long ago.

Frowning, Shen Nian Nian considered calling him.

At that moment, she noticed that on Shen Chuyan’s desk, in the upper left corner, lay a thick copy of the English classic Wuthering Heights. Peeking out from a gap in the book seemed to be something.

Curious, Shen Nian Nian walked over and opened the book.

Inside, a few photographs were tucked between the pages. But when she looked closely at the girl in the photos, her blood instantly turned to ice.

A chill ran up her spine.

Those were photos from her childhood! No—more precisely, they were photos of Qin Xiaoli when she was a child.

The girl in the pictures had a countenance as fierce as a raging beast, forcing Shen Nian Nian to instinctively step back.

Qin Xiaoli, Qin Xiaoli…

No, she wasn’t Qin Xiaoli. She rejected that name. She was Shen Nian Nian—the eldest Miss of the Shen family, Shen Nian Nian!

Overwhelmed, Shen Nian Nian stumbled, tripping over a chair and falling to the floor. A servant outside the door asked with concern, “Miss, are you alright?”

“Don’t come in!” Shen Nian Nian screamed, her voice nearly cracking, “Do not come in!”

“Yes, Miss.”

The servants, resigned as ever, obeyed. They were used to her temperamental nature.

Taking deep, forceful breaths to steady herself, Shen Nian Nian stood up. With trembling hands, she hastily reinserted the photographs back into the pages of the book, and then returned the book to its original place.

When she stepped out of the room, the servants looked at her in varying expressions. She glared fiercely at them and shouted, “Don’t you dare tell my brother that I’ve been in his room!”

“Yes, Miss.”

Shen Nian Nian then returned to her own room. With trembling hands, she took out her cell phone and dialed Wen Yang.

………

The TV series Feng Luan was nearing completion, and everyone was excited—brimming with energy each day.

Yet Jiang Xingxing had noticed that recently Shen Chuyan had changed a lot. The once sunny, cheerful, and talkative Shen Chuyan was nowhere to be seen. It seemed as if he was hiding many things deep within his heart.

One day, when Jiang Xingxing saw him standing alone, lost in thought by the palace wall, she considered going over to ask him what was wrong.

“If you discovered that the person closest to you had been lying to you for years, what would you do?” Shen Chuyan asked her.

Jiang Xingxing thought for a moment and replied, “Maybe I’d forgive him.”

“Really?”

“If he was extremely important to me—someone I held dear—I’d forgive him once.” Jiang Xingxing held up one finger, indicating “one.”

“But only this one time. If he ever deceives me again in the future, I will not forgive him.”

“Why only this one time?” Shen Chuyan asked.

Jiang Xingxing pondered a moment longer and said, “Since he’s someone you love dearly, isn’t he worth that one act of forgiveness?”

Gazing into Jiang Xingxing’s gentle eyes, Shen Chuyan’s heart trembled violently…

The one you hold dear… There was a time when he had cherished her just as much. After all these years as siblings, how had things come to this?

Moreover, if he were to tear apart the bloody truth now, how would his elderly parents bear it? Furthermore, the real Shen Nian Nian had been missing for so many years—a double blow for his parents.

Just then, Shen Chuyan received a phone call. The caller ID displayed “Li Lin.”

“Chuyan, if you have some time, let’s meet. Last time you asked me to investigate that couple with the surname Qin—I’ve got some results, and…” Li Lin said in a low voice, “I’m afraid it’s a big case. You’d better come over right now. I’ll be waiting.”

As night deepened, the streetlights along the road shone brightly.

In a flurry of urgency, Shen Chuyan hurried to the police station. There, under a large tree at the entrance, Li Lin was waiting with a cigarette in hand.

Li Lin, standing at about 6’0″ in his crisp black uniform, exuded efficiency. Judging by his demeanor, he was clearly still on duty.

Unable to wait until his shift was over, he had rushed to find Shen Chuyan—certainly something very important had come up.

“Linzi,” Shen Chuyan greeted him. “You’re calling me in so urgently—what did you find?”

“Let’s not waste time. Come with me.”

“Alright.”

Li Lin led Shen Chuyan into the police station. A female colleague on duty recognized Shen Chuyan and exclaimed, “A celebrity!”

“Wow, it really is him!”

“Shen Chuyan.”

“Can I get his autograph?”

“Wow, Li Lin, sure! I used to think you were joking when you said you knew big celebrities!”

“Brother Lin, I’d like to take a photo with Shen Chuyan. Is that okay?”

……

Li Lin led Shen Chuyan into his duty room and blocked a group of female colleagues at the door. “Alright, I have important business to attend to. I promise you I’ll get to the autographs and photos later—next time for sure.”

“One word is a bond!”

The female colleagues dispersed contentedly. Li Lin then closed the office door and poured a cup of hot water for Shen Chuyan using a disposable paper cup. “Drink some water first. As for this matter… it’s rather complicated.”

Shen Chuyan took the paper cup and placed it on the desk. He said to Li Lin, “We’ve been brothers for many years. You can tell me anything. When I asked you to investigate, it was because I already had a hunch, though I wasn’t entirely sure. So feel free to speak frankly.”

Li Lin fetched a stool and sat down across from Shen Chuyan. “The couple you asked me to look into last time appears to have some connection with your sister’s kidnapping case over a decade ago.”

Shen Chuyan’s eye muscles twitched as he waited for Li Lin to continue.

“Back then, the kidnapper of Shen Nian Nian—the man who later ended his own life by jumping into the river—was named Qin Zhaoye. He and Qin Zhaolin were brothers.”

“Just as I suspected…”

“You should recall the circumstances from back then,” Li Lin went on. “Qin Zhaolin once worked as a foreman at the real estate company under the Shen Group. Later, due to a mishap, he fell from the second floor and had his left leg amputated.”

Shen Chuyan nodded. “I was still a kid then, but I got the gist of it. His elder brother—whom you mentioned, Qin Zhaoye—was dissatisfied with the compensation and kidnapped my sister, Shen Nian Nian, as an act of revenge. And that very day, Shen Nian Nian happened to be with Shang Jie’s son, Shang Jie, so both children were taken away by Qin Zhaoye.”

Picking up where Shen Chuyan left off, Li Lin continued, “After the two children went missing for five days and six nights, they were eventually recovered. Two days later, Qin Zhaoye’s body was found by the river, and it was preliminarily ruled a suicide.”

“Both families got their children back, and the kidnapper was dead. The case was then closed and never investigated further,” Li Lin said with a shake of his head and a sigh. “If only the investigation had continued back then, perhaps… such a huge mistake wouldn’t have happened.”

Shen Chuyan asked nervously, “What mistake?”

“The kidnapper Qin Zhaoye had a daughter—a girl named Qin Xiaoli.”

“Qin Xiaoli?”

Shen Chuyan recalled that on the day he accompanied Jiang Xingxing to visit the Qin family home, he heard Qin Zhaolin repeatedly refer to Jiang Xingxing as ‘Qin Xiaoli.’

“I know that. They even mentioned that one of my friends is Qin Xiaoli.”

“According to our investigation at the time, after Qin Zhaoye divorced his wife, custody of the child was granted to the wife. And since his wife had been working in the South, the police assumed Qin Xiaoli had always been with her. But last week, when I called Qin Xiaoli’s mother, I learned that the child had long been taken away by her father and there’s been no word since. Moreover, Qin Xiaoli’s mother has started a new family, so she has no intention whatsoever of reclaiming her biological daughter.”

Shen Chuyan’s face gradually darkened. In Li Lin’s painstaking, step-by-step explanation, the truth of the matter began to emerge in vague outlines.

“In other words, Qin Xiaoli has been missing all this time, and the police haven’t had a clue.”

“You can’t really blame the police,” Li Lin remarked. “After all, this was nearly twenty years ago. The legal system and enforcement back then had its shortcomings. If it happened today, there’s no way something like this would occur.”

“Where is Qin Xiaoli now? Can she be found?”

Li Lin glanced at Shen Chuyan apologetically. “Well… Didn’t you tell me earlier that your sister’s blood type didn’t match your DNA tests—that there was no genetic relation? Later, when you gave me your ‘sister’ Shen Nian Nian’s blood sample, I took the liberty of comparing it with Qin Zhaolin’s blood. The results showed… a genetic relationship.”

At these words, Shen Chuyan felt as if he’d been struck by lightning; his eyes immediately filled with red.

That meant Shen Nian Nian was Qin Xiaoli—the daughter of the kidnapper. So what about his real sister…? Where was his sister? After all these years—was she dead or alive? What about his Nian Nian…?

The paper cup in Shen Chuyan’s hand was already crumpled from his grip, water spilling out all over the desk…

“Don’t get too worked up,” Li Lin quickly cautioned. “Just let me continue. Think about it—if things were really like that, would I even be able to call you here?”

Shen Chuyan looked up at him. Li Lin saw that his eyes were bloodshot all over, and he understood just how devastating the news about Shen Nian Nian was.

He had long known that Shen Nian Nian wasn’t his biological sister—the blood type comparison was unmistakable. But initially, Shen Chuyan had guessed that the police had simply mistaken the child.

However, if Shen Nian Nian is actually Qin Xiaoli, then the nature of the case is far more serious.

Shen Chuyan clutched Li Lin’s sleeve, his hands trembling uncontrollably, and his voice hoarse as he asked, “Just tell me—my Nian Nian… is she still alive?”

Li Lin quickly reassured him, “She’s alive, she’s very much alive. Don’t lose your head—your sister is alive and well.”

Shen Chuyan suddenly exhaled a long, relieved breath. The emotional roller coaster nearly left him drained, his entire body weak. With red eyes, he looked at Li Lin and said, “Tell me everything you know.”

Li Lin lit a cigarette and began slowly, “It was also by sheer chance that while I was investigating Qin Zhaolin, I discovered that someone else was also looking into him.”

Shen Chuyan perked up sharply, “Who?”

“Lin Chuan—the assistant to the CEO of the Shang Group.”

“Lin Chuan?” Shen Chuyan asked in surprise. “But Xingxing never mentioned that the Qin couple had tangled her up in their mess with Shang Jie.”

“Yeah, I found that odd too. Then I thought—he himself was once kidnapped. Perhaps he’s investigating the same case from back then. But then I pondered further, and something didn’t add up… Look…”

Li Lin took a sheet of paper and, using a marker, wrote down the names of several key individuals—

“Shang Jie was also one of the people involved in the kidnapping case, and his wife, Jiang Xingxing, was forcefully labeled as Qin Xiaoli by the Qin couple. And you always say that Jiang Xingxing looks like Shen Nian Nian…”

Li Lin connected the names with lines. Finally, he drew a straight arrow linking Jiang Xingxing’s name to Shen Nian Nian’s. “I boldly speculate that Jiang Xingxing is your biological sister.”

Shen Chuyan was stunned for a moment before suddenly saying, “Dream on. Where’s the evidence?”

A slight smile tugged at the corner of Li Lin’s mouth. “Without absolute certainty, do you think I’d have called you here?”

“Spit it out.”

Leaning back in his chair, Li Lin continued, “I looked into Jiang Xingxing’s background. She’s an orphan who, as a child, was adopted by a family with the surname Jiang. And the year she was adopted happened to be the same year as the kidnapping case. The timing fits perfectly.”

“That alone, though, is hardly enough to prove anything.”

At this point, Shen Chuyan appeared extremely cautious—he could no longer bear any further blows from mistakes.

“Last time when Jiang Xingxing fell off a horse, got injured, and was hospitalized for a week, out of caution, Shang Jie had the hospital retain her blood sample.”

Shen Chuyan looked at Li Lin, a trace of astonishment in his eyes. “You were able to retrieve a blood sample?”

Li Lin smiled and pulled an identification report from his file cabinet, handing it over to Shen Chuyan. “I have my ways, so there’s no need to ask further. In any case, her DNA matches with yours—it’s a biological match.”

Shen Chuyan took the file envelope with trembling hands…

………

8:00 PM, Wangjiang Villa

Jiang Xingxing was hard at work in the gym, panting as she exercised. She had set the elliptical machine to maximum resistance and had been running for twenty minutes, while Shang Jie was doing push-ups on a yoga mat.

“I still have plenty of time,” Jiang Xingxing said while running. “I can last at least twenty minutes—otherwise, you might as well admit defeat.”

Shang Jie, his arm muscles tensed and visibly straining with energy, red-faced and with beads of sweat on his nose, continued his rhythmic push-ups. “Stop babbling—keep going.”

“Don’t push yourself too hard; I can see you’re exhausted.”

“Don’t disrupt morale.”

“Alright, alright—let’s see how long you can keep up that stubborn streak.”

………

At that moment, Lin Chuan walked into the gym and said to Jiang Xingxing, “Madam, one of your friends is here outside.”

Jiang Xingxing got off the elliptical machine and asked in surprise, “At this time of night? Who would be looking for me—and they’ve even come to the house?”

“Just go out and see.”

Wiping the sweat from her forehead with a towel, she called to Shang Jie, “Get up quickly.”

“You admit defeat.”

“Alright, alright, I admit defeat. If you keep doing push-ups, you’ll probably break your arms.”

Shang Jie roared deeply and collapsed onto the yoga mat; after several hundred push-ups, he was now barely holding on on one breath.

Jiang Xingxing stepped out, and Lin Chuan, looking at Shang Jie lying almost lifeless on the mat, asked in confusion, “Boss, it was just a bet—why are you pushing yourself so hard?”

Shang Jie sat up, shooting him a sidelong glance, and a gentle smile suddenly curled his lips. “My bet with my wife was… to give me a daughter next year.”

Lin Chuan’s eyes widened in surprise, and then, unable to help himself, he gave Shang Jie a thumbs up. “Brother, I’m convinced.”

Jiang Xingxing left the gym. In the living room, no one was present. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, one could faintly see the silhouette of a man standing in the yard.

Shen Chuyan, slender and tall, was dressed in a light gray trench coat with a fur collar around his hat. He stood in the night, head bowed as he gazed down at the green lawn.

A large dog lay near its doghouse, tilting its head to look at him and letting out a soft “woo.”

Jiang Xingxing took a white towel handed to her by a servant, wiped the sweat from her face, and asked, “Why didn’t you invite the guest in?”

The servant, clearly seeing this movie star-level celebrity for the first time and with slightly flushed, embarrassed cheeks, replied, “He refused to come inside—he said he wanted to see madam.”

Originally, Jiang Xingxing had planned to take a shower before going out to meet her guest. But on second thought, if it weren’t an urgent matter, Shen Chuyan wouldn’t have come to the house in the middle of the night.

She stepped outside and smiled at Shen Chuyan. “Brother Chuyan, what brings you here? Is there something urgent?”

Hearing her, Shen Chuyan turned his head and looked at her.

His eyes were remarkably striking—with a row of long, dark, and thick eyelashes framing his inky black eyes that seemed full of emotion. For a moment, Jiang Xingxing even thought he looked as if he were acting.

Shen Chuyan walked over to her, placed both hands on her shoulders, and met her gaze, studying her face intently.

His gentle look swept slowly over her brows, nose, and lips…

“It really is…” he said in a low, husky tone, “you, huh.”

Jiang Xingxing felt somewhat uncomfortable under his intense gaze. “What’s with you tonight? You seem… off.”

In the next second, Shen Chuyan suddenly pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly!

There was a faint hint of mint in his embrace—a very fresh, clean scent. She wasn’t unfamiliar with his hugs, after all, they had acted together before. But this wasn’t acting now!

Jiang Xingxing’s mind went “boom” and she was stunned.

She had just finished exercising and hadn’t even showered!

Shen Chuyan buried his face in her hair, inhaling deeply. “I finally… found you.”

At that moment, Lin Chuan stepped out and saw the shocking scene before him. He nearly slipped and fell down the stairs. Meanwhile, the servants stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the explosive scene outside and whispering among themselves.

“Damn, is our young master being cheated on?”

“Madam is amazing—if even a movie star comes right to the doorstep!”

“I can’t imagine what expression young master will have when he sees this.”

“Should we chase that guy out?”

“Are you crazy? Would you dare use a mop on a movie star?”

“This is our young master’s house—this movie star is way too arrogant!”

Lin Chuan: …
Servants: …

Lin Chuan stiffly turned his head and noticed that Shang Jie had already come out, wearing a short-sleeved sports shirt that showed off his robust, well-defined arms.

The servants quickly dispersed, each busy with their own tasks, but all eyes remained on Shang Jie.

The atmosphere was so awkward it felt like it might explode.

Lin Chuan hurriedly said, “Boss, I think Shen Chuyan must have encountered something serious.”

Shang Jie, with a solemn expression and deep coffee-colored eyes that held a chill, pushed open the door and left.

Lin Chuan and the servants quickly followed, hiding behind the door to watch the spectacle.

But true to form, Shang Jie, being Shang Jie, did not behave as everyone expected by storming up to punch people and drive them away.

He calmly stood in front of the embracing couple and elegantly lit a cigarette.

Lin Chuan: …
Servants: …

“This, for fck’s sake, is the true bearing of a general!”

Jiang Xingxing was completely confused as she forcefully pushed Shen Chuyan away, assuming he was drunk.

“Our friends are our friends. But if you deliberately try to disrupt the harmony of my family, forget about being friends!”

Jiang Xingxing warned him angrily.

Shen Chuyan’s eyes were a little red; in the moonlight, there was something strangely seductive about his gaze. He was too handsome for words.

His beautiful eyes fixed solely on Jiang Xingxing, conveying countless unspoken words.

Servant (whispering): “Look at the expression in that movie star’s eyes—such profound love.”

Lin Chuan: “I feel like tonight’s going to end in blood.”

Shang Jie reached out and grasped Jiang Xingxing’s slender wrist, pulling her behind him, and coldly said, “Shen Chuyan, what exactly do you want with my wife?”

Jiang Xingxing hurriedly explained, “No matter what he might be thinking, I have not entertained even a shred of an idea!”

Shang Jie lowered his gaze at her and said, “You cleanly denied it.”

Although his tone carried a note of reproach, he still trusted her.

“Really, I don’t know what’s gotten into you tonight, Chuyan,” she pleaded, looking at him. “Explain yourself!”

Otherwise, she’d be in deep trouble—no way to clear her name.

At that moment, Shen Chuyan’s rationality slowly returned. He let out a soft “ah” as if waking from a deep dream, appearing dazed.

Jiang Xingxing thought: Just don’t say you were hexed or something.

After a moment of hesitation, Shen Chuyan said, “I meant to… invite Jiang Xingxing to my sister’s birthday banquet at the end of this month.”

At these words, everyone was stunned.

Is it really necessary to make such a fuss over inviting someone to a birthday banquet? It sounded as if it were a matter of life and death.

Shen Chuyan continued, “I wasn’t in a good state earlier, and I lost control for a moment because of some family matters. I’m sorry, Mr. Shang.”

Shang Jie glared coldly at him, weighing the truth in his words. Yet, facing an equal match—and Shen Chuyan was, after all, a movie star who spoke with sincere conviction—he continued, “I’ve been off all day. When I saw Xingxing earlier, for a fleeting moment I thought I saw my sister.”

Shang Jie asked, “What on earth happened?”

“These are family matters that I can’t disclose,” Shen Chuyan replied. “But I sincerely invite Xingxing to the birthday banquet. I plan to announce something very important in front of all our relatives and friends.”

Before Shen Chuyan could finish, Shang Jie, still on guard, asked, “And what does this have to do with my wife?”

“She is my best friend; I want her there to witness it.”

Shang Jie felt that Shen Chuyan was just spouting nonsense, but he wouldn’t interfere with Jiang Xingxing’s decision.

“If you want to go, go. If not, don’t force yourself.”

Jiang Xingxing looked at Shen Chuyan with a puzzled expression on her face.

Just a moment ago, when he embraced her, he said… “Finally, I found you.”

It was as if he had recovered a lost treasure, and his eyes were filled with such deep, passionate love.

For some reason, Jiang Xingxing felt overwhelming emotion welling up inside her—her heart ached, and she nearly wanted to burst into tears.

“Then I’ll go.”

Shang Jie: …

Jiang Xingxing stepped up to Shen Chuyan and patted his shoulder. “No matter what you’re going through, go home and get some sleep. Tomorrow, everything will be alright.”

Shen Chuyan grasped her hand. “Mm.”

Shang Jie walked over, withdrew Jiang Xingxing’s hand, and glared at Shen Chuyan, “Lin Chuan, see off the guest.”

“No need—I’ll walk back on my own,” Shen Chuyan replied as he turned and left the courtyard, deep in thought.

Jiang Xingxing and Shang Jie exchanged a look and shrugged, silently conveying that they were truly innocent in all this.

Sansukini: I suddenly have a hunch that Shen Chuyan’s going to have an accident courtesy of the fake daughter.
