I Started Farming in the Countryside After I Divorced

Chapter 47: Another Fever in the Night

— A luxurious spaceship soars by, its path illuminated by the shimmering glow of 3,500 stars —

A night spent using ten condoms left him utterly drained, and the aftermath was nothing short of catastrophic.

At half past two in the morning, Su Ling suddenly came down with a high fever.

His head throbbed violently, each pulse a sharp wave of agony. His body went limp and drained of strength, as if energy had been ripped from him. Tears poured down his face, his breath ragged and shallow. Curled in on himself, he whimpered softly, helpless and broken.

With a serious look on his face, Lin Feng held him close, his hand tenderly stroking Su Ling’s back in a comforting rhythm.

  “Ling… wake up, Baby…”

However, Su Ling could not make out any of his words. He slumped against Lin Feng, nuzzling his feverish forehead into his chest. In a pleading whisper, he called out, “Lin Feng… Lin Feng… my head hurts…”

Lin Feng’s expression was one of deep sorrow as he swathed Su Ling in the blanket, cradling him gently against his chest like a precious child. “I’m so sorry, it’s my fault.”

“I thought you didn’t want me anymore…” Su Ling wrapped his arms around Lin Feng’s neck, burying his face in the crook of his shoulder. His voice trembled with sadness as he murmured, “I have nothing left… only you… and yet you don’t want me anymore…”

“I want you, always have, always will,” Lin Feng whispered softly in his ear, his voice filled with love. “I love you.”

“You don’t want me, so I don’t want you either!” Su Ling’s voice cracked as he struggled to contain his overwhelming emotions, trapped in sorrow that he could not escape. Lin Feng’s words felt distant, as if he were speaking from a far-off place, their meaning blurred and unclear.

“I want a divorce since I can’t bear to hate you… Sob… I love you, I love you so much…” He melted into the man’s embrace, his voice a fragile plea. “Please don’t push me away, okay? Don’t ignore me, please?”

“Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere, and I’ll never ignore you.” Lin Feng spoke soothingly, as if comforting a child. His kisses fell like gentle raindrops on Su Ling’s sweaty skin. “Let’s return to City S and head to the hospital, okay?”

As soon as Su Ling heard the word “hospital,” he shook his head vigorously. “No hospital! I won’t go to the hospital!”

“Alright, alright, we won’t go to the hospital,” Lin Feng acquiesced, his voice calm as he adjusted to Su Ling’s distress. With one hand, he skillfully navigated his phone and dialed Zhan Yang’s number.

Zhan Yang was clearly still asleep — his phone rang a dozen times before he groggily picked up.

  “CEO Lin?”

“Su Ling has a high fever. Book the earliest flight to City S and come here to pick us up.” Lin Feng instructed, his voice firm and composed.

“Ah? Yes, sir!” Zhan Yang snapped awake, bolting upright from the hotel bed. He rubbed his face to shake off the remnants of sleep and immediately began searching for the earliest flight.

As soon as Su Ling caught wind of Lin Feng’s plan to buy a flight ticket to City S, he kicked up a fuss, struggling to break free from Lin Feng’s arms.

“Stay still, Baby.” Lin Feng set his phone down, his hand pressing gently to hold him in place.

“Sob… I don’t want to go anywhere!” Su Ling protested, lying stubbornly on the bed as the silk blanket fell away, revealing his back dotted with love bites. Lin Feng’s expression darkened for a moment; he swallowed hard and summoned all his self-control as he gently pulled the blanket back over Su Ling’s body to conceal the traces of their passionate night.

He pulled Su Ling close, brushing the sweat-drenched hair from her face and kissing away the tears from the corners of his eyes. At that moment, his usually stoic expression melted into a deep, silent worry.

Su Ling’s nose was completely clogged, making each breath a struggle. His thoughts were slowly starting to clear, though still hazy. He rasped, “There’s cold medicine… in the drawer…”

“I’ll get it for you.” Lin Feng noticed that Su Ling had regained his composure and let out a quiet sigh of relief. He rummaged through the drawer of the bedside table for the medicine, hesitated for a moment, then put it back. Turning to see Su Ling lying with his back to him, he quietly slipped out of bed and retrieved a box of medicine from the suitcase tucked in the corner. He took out a white pill, poured a fresh cup of warm water, and propped Su Ling up.

“Here, take your medicine,” he urged gently.

Su Ling struggled to push himself upright, carefully holding the pill in his mouth before washing it down with a gulp of warm water.

After taking his medicine, he slumped back onto the bed, his eyelids growing heavy with sleep.

With a touch as gentle as one comforting a small animal, Lin Feng ran his fingers through Su Ling’s hair and massaged the pressure points on his head.

Moments later, the medication worked its magic. Su Ling felt his fever subside, the pounding in his head eased, and his stuffy nose cleared. He turned over and faced Lin Feng, wrapping his arms around his waist.

“I… I just feel awful,” he admitted, his voice barely a whisper.

“Yes, I know.” Lin Feng gently adjusted him into a more comfortable position, allowing him to rest on his chest.

“I don’t even know what’s wrong with me. Whenever I come down with a fever… I just feel utterly down.” As the man’s gentle touch soothed him, Su Ling closed his eyes, letting a calmness wash over him. “The thought of you not wanting me… It hurts so much that I feel like I might die from it.”

“There won’t be a next time, Baby,” Lin Feng promised. “I should’ve been there for you last time. That was my mistake.”

It was hard to tell whether Su Ling was even listening as he spoke on, lost in his own thoughts. “Coming to the countryside alone, not knowing a soul, staying in this empty house… The first night was so terrifying and lonely that I hid under the covers, crying. It was so embarrassing. Waking up the next morning in such an unfamiliar place felt like I had no future without you… It was absolutely terrifying.”

Since falling in love with Lin Feng during his university days, Su Ling had believed with unwavering conviction that they would always be together. As such, he poured his heart into the relationship without hesitation, never imagining that the journey of life would throw obstacles in their path. The thought of not being able to overcome these challenges filled him with dread, for it could mean their love would drift apart like scattered feathers on the wind.

That day, he stood at the crossroads, struggling with a choice that weighed heavily on his heart.

Lin Feng listened in silence, his gaze deep and intense. He took Su Ling’s hand, their fingers entwining.

Su Ling continued to pour out his heart, his illness weakening his resolve like a seabird struggling against the fury of a storm. At last, he returned to the refuge of his lover’s embrace, nestling into their warmth and seeking solace.

“The tea plantation matters have taken my mind off things… I need to grow vegetables… tend to the fields… raise a puppy and a kitten… I’m slowly getting used to life without you… I’ll take care of myself now…” His voice trailed off,  murmuring those last words before lapsing into silence.

Lin Feng traced his fingertip gently over Su Ling’s lips, lost in thought. Moments later, he lowered his gaze, finding the young man in his arms with his brows relaxed and peacefully asleep.

An hour later, the phone on the bedside table vibrated twice. Lin Feng reached over and grabbed it.

“I’m outside, CEO Lin,” Zhan Yang responded respectfully.

“Give me a moment,” Lin Feng said before hanging up. He gently eased Su Ling out of his arms and picked out some clothes for him. After packing a few essentials, he wrapped Su Ling in a light blanket and carried him downstairs.

The commotion stirred the cat and dog from their slumber in the guest hall, and they scurried to Lin Feng’s feet in confusion. With furrowed brows, Lin Feng fought against his discomfort and carried Su Ling out the door.

In the quiet hours of a summer morning, there was a crispness to the air as the horizon started to brighten with the soft hues of daybreak.

Zhan Yang was taken aback when he saw CEO Lin carrying Su Ling out. Snapping back to his senses, he hurriedly opened the car door. When he noticed the two pets pacing near the car, Zhan Yang inquired, “Will they… be coming along as well?”

Lin Feng placed Su Ling in the back seat, then shot a cold glance at the two small creatures. “Send them back to the courtyard.”

“But…” Zhan Yang hesitated, his words stuck in his throat. What would happen to them if no one’s at home?

Lin Feng instructed, “Drop us off at the airport, then come back here.”

“… Yes, sir…” Zhan Yang answered. “I’ll have Yunzhuo pick you up at the airport in City S.”

“Mn.” Lin Feng stowed the luggage, then slid into the car and gently drew the slumbering Su Ling into his arms.

Lin Clan Private Hospital, City S

  “You’ve gone too far!”

In the Chief of Psychiatry’s office, a man in a white coat and glasses cast a stern glare at Lin Feng, who was lounging on the sofa.

At six in the morning, when he should have been blissfully lost in his sleep, an urgent call from his boss yanked him out of bed, summoning him to the hospital to treat a patient he had not seen in six months.

“The first time he was hospitalized due to a fever, I warned you not to stimulate his emotions. Excitement, sorrow, depression, and fury can all trigger an episode.”

Lin Feng clasped his hands together, enduring the doctor’s stern reprimands without a word.

He lifted the teacup, took a few sips to soothe his throat, and then asked in a gentler tone, “Was your research in Country L successful?”

Upon hearing that question, Lin Feng snapped back to reality. “Mn.”

Ji Qing tugged at his tie, relaxing a bit. “You need to get him to Country L as soon as possible for treatment. This type of genetic mental illness worsens the longer it’s left untreated. He’s currently in the early stages, and his condition is relatively stable, but if we wait a few years and he develops schizophrenia, it could become a serious problem.”

“I know.” Lin Feng got to his feet and strode toward the door.

Rubbing his throbbing temples, Ji Qing stopped him in his tracks and gave him another stern warning. “Cut back on your bedroom activities, and keep your urges in check!”

His eyes downcast, Lin Feng opened the door with a sharp twist of the knob, stepping out with an expression that was utterly frigid.

  Slam!

The door slammed shut with a deafening thud, and Ji Qing glared in disbelief.

After a moment, he ground his teeth in frustration.

“Good advice certainly grates on the ear!”

After leaving the Department of Psychiatry, Lin Feng moved like a breeze, his steps light as he made his way to the VIP ward. Once inside, he softly approached the bed.

Su Ling lay peacefully beneath the snow-white quilt, his breaths steady and his temperature normal.

In the chair beside the bed, Lin Feng held his hand outside the blanket. He bent down to kiss each finger tenderly, his eyes rimmed with redness.

  “I’m sorry, Baby…” he whispered.

Su Ling drifted out of slumber, faintly aware of something pecking at his fingers like a tiny chick. His lashes quivered before his eyes fluttered open, and the stark white walls of the hospital came into view. In an instant, he was fully awake.

“Hmm?” He blinked, taking in the surroundings. Is this Lin Clan Private Hospital’s VIP ward?

Having been hospitalized several times, he knew this ward like the back of his hand.

“You’re awake?” Lin Feng asked, his voice thick and hoarse.

Su Ling looked over at the man, taking in his haggard visage and the stubble along his jawline. His peach blossom eyes narrowed slightly in distaste as he remarked, “Why didn’t you shave?”

Lin Feng leaned in, deliberately brushing his chin against the soft back of Su Ling’s hand. “I was waiting for you to wake up and help me shave it off.”

Su Ling pulled his hand back, giving it a quick shake. “Not a chance.”

Not the least bit bothered, Lin Feng leaned in close and pressed his lips to Su Ling’s.

Su Ling tilted his head back, sharing a kiss with him for a moment before their lips parted, breathing raggedly and unevenly.

  “My fever’s back again?”

The memories flooded back of that night when Lin Feng had tossed him around in bed, trying every position imaginable. By the end, the sheer intensity of it all overwhelmed him, sending him spiraling into unconsciousness.

He remembered feeling feverish in the latter part of the night, though the details were murky. It seemed he had curled up in Lin Feng’s embrace and wept for what felt like a long time.

It was mortifying to be knocked out by his husband and end up in the hospital with a fever.

The author has something to say:

It’s a fictional world, so the illness plaguing Su Ling is entirely made up. Don’t delve too deeply into it!

It’s akin to a mental illness triggered by genes, one that can’t handle any form of stimulation. Yep, that’s the gist of it. I’ll explain more later.

Poor CEO Lin, he’d been holding it in for far too long.
