Timeline: Capitol Hill Day
Troy was chopping vegetables when a sudden sharp pain shot through his wrist—his modified wrist-mounted smart brain had delivered an electric shock.
The man paused, stopped chopping, and first commanded Xiaona to disable the surveillance, then opened an encrypted communication channel.
The red text on the screen was alarming.
The man finished reading it, remained silent for a second, and then put down the knife.
He left the kitchen and went to his bedroom. After a while, he came out, gently patted the head of Jiang Rui, who was practicing walking along the hallway wall, and knelt down to tell him, “I have to leave.”

“The major went out alone,” Xiaona replied.
“Alone?” Jiang Miao was taken aback and quickly asked, “Where’s Rui Rui?”
“Jiang Rui is in the stroller, with the hibernation system activated,” Xiaona replied.
Jiang Miao’s pupils contracted sharply. Not bothering to inform her colleagues, she rushed out, asking, “What’s going on? Is he hurt?”
“No, Jiang Rui’s vital signs are normal. He’s perfectly healthy,” Xiaona said.
Jiang Miao felt slightly relieved, but this didn’t explain why Yan He had left Jiang Rui alone at home—something that had never happened before!
As she hurried through the hallway, she bumped into Tanaka, knocking him over. Surprised, Tanaka asked, “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Miao didn’t have time to explain and only said, “There’s something wrong at home; I have to go!”
Before her words had even fully left her mouth, she was already gone.
When Jiang Miao got home, the house was eerily quiet. She rushed into the bedroom and saw that the crib was empty, and the stroller next to it was sealed.
She hurried over to activate the control panel, first checking Jiang Rui’s vital signs. After confirming that everything was normal, she finally relaxed, deactivated the hibernation system, and woke Jiang Rui.
Of course, Jiang Rui didn’t know anything—he was just a baby.
Unable to contact Yan He for several hours, Jiang Miao ultimately decided to report him as missing. However, she was refused on the grounds that a missing person report cannot be filed until 24 hours have passed. Jiang Miao was anxious but had no other options.
As Jiang Rui’s eyelids began to droop from fatigue, Jiang Miao took him back to the bedroom. Looking at the stroller and crib in the room, she hesitated for a moment before placing Jiang Rui in the stroller.
It was hard to explain why—perhaps it was a sixth sense.
When the ultrasonic weapon breached the house’s glass curtain wall, Jiang Miao saw, before losing consciousness, that the stroller she had designed herself automatically closed to protect Jiang Rui from the impact.
Good.
Jiang Miao lost consciousness…
When she woke up, she was at a military base. Her abrasions had been treated, and as soon as she opened her eyes, she called out, “Rui Rui!”
“Dr. Jiang, please don’t be alarmed. Your child is safe and unharmed,” the medical staff reassured her and soon brought Jiang Rui to her.
Jiang Rui was happily munching on a teething biscuit from an unknown source. Seeing that he was unharmed, Jiang Miao felt relieved and asked, “What exactly is going on?”
She was taken to meet Colonel Natalie Pokova from the National Security Agency.
Natalie didn’t explain what had happened, only that it was a matter of national security. Jiang Miao answered the colonel’s questions as calmly as she could.
The questioning lasted for several hours, during which Jiang Rui fell asleep again. Fortunately, the National Security Agency had also brought Jiang Rui’s stroller to the base, so Jiang Miao placed him back in the stroller and activated the soundproofing.
Jiang Miao was questioned extensively about Yan He, and she realized that the whole situation was undoubtedly connected to him. When the questioning finally ended, she asked, “Colonel, can you tell me where Yan He is now? Is he safe? Has something happened to him?”
Natalie refused to reveal anything.
Jiang Miao anxiously waited for four days.
On the fourth day, she was taken to the interrogation room again. As she entered, she immediately spotted a young man with a handsome face and a strong build among a group of people in black suits. The young man stood up and stared at her.
“Yan He!” Jiang Miao exclaimed with joy as she rushed over, “Where have you been?”
Yan He didn’t speak, keeping his lips tightly pressed together and his brow furrowed as he looked at her.
Jiang Miao then noticed that this “Yan He” had a scar on the left side of his face, near the ear and neck. It was clearly a scar from an injury that hadn’t been treated in time.
Jiang Miao felt both shock and pain, repeatedly asking, “What happened? How did you get injured? Are you alright? You…”
Just as her hand was about to touch Yan He’s cheek, the person suddenly froze.
The room was silent, and everyone, including Yan He, watched her intently and silently.
Jiang Miao’s eyes widened.
“You—you’re not Yan He!” Jiang Miao’s voice rose sharply, tinged with an indescribable fear, “Colonel! He’s not Yan He! He’s an imposter! Get him arrested!”
“Calm down, Doctor. We know he’s not your cohabitant,” Natalie said, holding her shoulder to steady her, and looked into her eyes, “But the person in front of you is the real Major Yan He.”
What does that mean? What does it mean?
Jiang Miao was bewildered.
“I am Yan He.”
The young man suddenly spoke, his face and voice familiar to her, but his words were incomprehensible: “I am Major Yan He of the Third Fleet Marine Special Forces, I am the real Yan He, and the person you know is an imposter.”
What are they talking about? Jiang Miao felt dizzy.
She tried to step back, but her legs suddenly gave way… Yan He’s hand, swift as lightning, caught her elbow and steadied her.
Jiang Miao looked up into a pair of dark, cold eyes. Despite the extremely familiar face, it felt so unfamiliar.
Jiang Miao gently pulled away, and Yan He released his grip.
“Doctor, please sit down and let’s talk,” Natalie said with sympathy in her eyes.
Jiang Miao sat down, remained silent for a few seconds, then looked up and demanded, “I want to know what’s going on!”
The room was quiet, except for Colonel Natalie’s clear and orderly narration.
The man she had lived with and raised a child with was actually a spy from the enemy country codenamed “Troy,” while the real Major Yan He had only returned to the country and contacted the border troops four days ago…
“Where is he?” Jiang Miao asked expressionlessly.
Natalie paused before answering, “He escaped.”
Jiang Miao could feel the sympathetic gazes from those around her. Among them, one gaze was notably different but intense. Jiang Miao looked up to meet the eyes of the real Yan He, who had a scar on his face.
That gaze was full of inquiry.
Jiang Miao instinctively erected a defensive mechanism in her mind.
“So, it’s all cleared up now, right? My parenting partner was a spy impersonating someone, and I don’t know what he did, but he’s escaped now,” Jiang Miao said indifferently. “So, what does this mean for me? Is there anything I need to cooperate with?”
Natalie understood Jiang Miao’s feelings at this moment.
According to their investigation, she and the imposter, Troy, were lovers, and her feelings had been completely deceived.
“Based on our investigation, you are not suspected,” Natalie said.
Jiang Miao said, “Then I…” She wanted to ask if she could leave now.
Natalie interrupted her, saying, “But there’s one more thing we need to confirm.”
Jiang Miao frowned and asked, “What’s that?”
Natalie waved her hand, and a young agent stepped forward, taking out a tubular device from a box. Jiang Miao recognized it as a military-grade gene tester.
She furrowed her brow, “Are you suspecting that I’m also an imposter?”
“No,” Natalie said, “We need to confirm who your child really belongs to.”
Jiang Miao was stunned.
Yan He suddenly spoke, “The person who matches your genes is me. The imposter applied to extract sperm from the military sperm bank while he was impersonating me.”
In other words, Jiang Rui, who was born from her and the “Yan He,” might also be the child of this completely unfamiliar man?
Jiang Miao understood the implication of his words and felt her whole body tense up.
The young agent stepped forward, intending to do what was usual. He looked down at the chubby baby with the thumb in his mouth, his round face looking up at him, eyes bright and big.
The young agent hesitated for a moment, bent down, and picked up a black hair from Jiang Rui’s shoulder, placing it into the sample slot.
The waiting was torturous, and after a minute, the tester beeped.
“Wow! Major Yan!” The young agent looked up and said to Yan He, “Congratulations, you’re a father!”
Both Yan He and Jiang Miao were taken aback.
Their gazes collided again, this time neither of them looked away.
Yan He’s gaze was deep and inscrutable. His eyes moved to Jiang Rui and stayed fixed on him.
Jiang Miao pressed her lips together and held Jiang Rui closer.
With Jiang Rui’s paternity confirmed as Major Yan He’s biological child, Dr. Jiang Miao was completely exonerated and became an entirely innocent victim.
Natalie patted her shoulder and said, “Take a rest, we’ll discuss things further later…”
Before she could finish her sentence, her communication device buzzed. She pressed the earpiece and listened for a moment, her expression suddenly sharpening. She looked at Jiang Miao and asked, “Doctor, do you know Liu Chengguang?”
……
……
With the revelation of Liu Chengguang’s clue, the room became suddenly busy.
In the midst of all the noise and activity, Jiang Miao, who remained quiet and still, seemed out of place. Jiang Rui, meanwhile, continued to suck his thumb, watching the adults in black scurrying around with curiosity.
Natalie, amid her busy schedule, glanced at Jiang Miao and pointed to a young agent. The agent understood and walked over to escort Jiang Miao out.
As Jiang Miao was leaving, she couldn’t help but look back and saw the scarred Yan He walking up to Natalie. The noise was too loud, and she could only hear him say, “I want to apply…”
Apply for what?
She stepped out, and the door closed behind her, cutting off further sounds.
Jiang Miao was released from her house arrest and was escorted by agents back to her home in Nice Garden.
The glass walls had been repaired, and the house had been cleaned. However, the damage to the furniture was still evident.
“My house was searched, wasn’t it?” Jiang Miao asked.
The agent replied, “This is a matter of national security. Please understand.”
Jiang Miao nodded, “I understand. Was anything found?”
“Nothing,” the agent said regretfully. “They didn’t leave anything behind.”
Clearly, they had only used Jiang Miao’s place as a cover.
After the agent left, Jiang Miao settled Jiang Rui and made her first call to Tanaka Min.
“Oh my God! You’re back too! What’s going on?” Tanaka shouted, “What did the Major do? Why are all the questions about him? Wait! Don’t say anything on the phone, I’ll be right over!!!”
Jiang Miao: “…” Before she could say a word, the call ended.
Tanaka hurried over in a frenzy.
He had also been summoned and questioned at the military base, and Natasha had not said these matters could not be shared with him. Jiang Miao told him everything she knew.
Tanaka was completely stunned.
“So, he wasn’t who he said he was?” He asked, wide-eyed. “What was his code name? Troy?”
Jiang Miao was now most reluctant to mention the man named Troy.
She thought she had been in a wonderful relationship, only to discover she didn’t even know what he looked like or what his real name was. It was possible she might never know.
“Are you… okay?” Tanaka asked cautiously.
“What could be wrong with me?” Jiang Miao squeezed the words out through gritted teeth. “Just consider it meeting a jerk.”
Jiang Miao’s feelings were indeed similar to when she discovered that Chen Berton was cheating on her—just that this situation was even more bizarre and the process even stranger.
But no matter how angry or upset she was, she had to face reality. This time was even worse than when Chen Borent cheated. Back then, she was upset, but moving out, blocking him, and having a big drink with Tanaka was enough to get over it by the next day.
This time, the jerk had left behind a tricky problem.
“I’m not worried about that right now,” she said.
Tanaka was puzzled. “What are you worried about then?”
Jiang Miao sighed and said, “Rui Rui has another biological father. It’s a huge mess.”
Tanaka understood and thought for a moment, then said, “But you didn’t lose out. The Major was supposed to be the one matched with you, and Rui Rui’s genetic level is genuinely excellent, not fabricated.”
“Idiot, you don’t get what I’m saying.” Facing this huge problem, Jiang Miao had no energy to think about the jerk who ran away. She had managed to get over the mood of a “heartbroken woman cheated on by a jerk,” but her tone was very heavy.
“The parenting agreement was signed with Troy, not the real Major Yan He.”
“Major Yan He is Rui Rui’s biological father, and he has the right to overturn the previous agreement.”
“I’m worried he might want to fight me for custody of the child!”
Jiang Miao was deeply troubled.
Sansukini: So there are 6 extras about Yan He. Personally, I also finished all the extras when I first read it, but since I have been rooting for He Yan, I didn’t think of this extra as part of the story. I would rather think of it as a different set of story because it kinda cancels out all the sincerity and care He Yan showed Jiang Miao and Rui (I believe he was sincere to her except that he hid behind another name).
