Chapter 117: The End

But Jiang Miao did not stop He Yan.

Because He Yan said, “I know you can understand.”

Yes, Jiang Miao understood better than anyone.

Just like before, when she risked separating He Yan and Jiang Rui, and took Jiang Rui back to Gita despite the dangers.

Because she had her own reason for being, her own value that she had to fulfill.

Before someone can be a father or mother, a wife or husband, they must first be themselves.

He Yan was Jiang Miao’s lover, Jiang Rui’s father, but first and foremost, he was himself.

He was a soldier. With a war that could determine the fate of all humanity looming, he couldn’t retreat.

Things were better in Nash, but in Gita, people like Jiang Miao were in the minority. Even the lovers of the soldiers couldn’t stay invested for long; after a few months, many of them automatically became ex-lovers.

Advertisements

For Jiang Miao, the eleven months passed both slowly and quickly. The waiting dragged on painfully, yet in the blink of an eye, time was up.

Every day, Jiang Miao stared at the stars, wondering if today was the day the allied forces would encounter the Beastmen.

But the government wouldn’t send back information from the frontlines immediately; it was over a month later when news of the battle finally broke in the media, sparking another wave of public interest.

The people at home were as lively as if celebrating a holiday, eagerly watching the live footage from the frontlines like they were watching a movie.

The footage was indeed edited, with grand and majestic background music, making it visually appealing.

Only people like Jiang Miao would feel their heart skip a beat with every explosion, the drumbeats of the background music striking directly at their heart, leaving them shaken and uneasy.

Jiang Miao collected all the videos from the frontlines and had AI analyze them. However, the number and duration of the videos were limited, and it was only in a video of less than two minutes that she found the warship belonging to He Yan and Yan He. The ship appeared for less than ten seconds.

Jiang Miao further analyzed those ten seconds of footage. In the enhanced images, countless fighter jets, mechas, and Beastmen were engaged in chaotic combat.

It was impossible to tell which one was He Yan and which one was Yan He.

Jiang Miao was familiar with the weaponry of both Nash and Gita, and the Beastmen’ ships and weapons had a completely different style.

No matter how she analyzed the footage, limited by the resolution, it was impossible to extract any useful data.

But just as she began to think about what she could do for those on the frontlines, someone in uniform knocked on her door. The government had lifted the 30-year ban preventing her from entering the military industry, with the condition that she would be conscripted to serve the country.

Advertisements

It sounded like a plot twist from a popular web novel she had read in her past life.

But Jiang Miao didn’t feel triumphant. Upon learning that the government wanted her to participate in the research on Orc weaponry, she immediately agreed without hesitation.

At the military research base, she encountered familiar faces. In this field, the top experts all knew each other.

Dr. Jiang Miao’s return was met with enthusiastic applause.

While the ordinary citizens in the rear lived peaceful and serene lives, the battle at the frontlines raged on, and Jiang Miao was busy and tense in the rear. Their research results were sent to the frontlines, where specialized ships acted as mobile factories, constantly improving their own weapons and making tactical adjustments against enemy weapons.

Since the war began, casualty lists from the frontlines were regularly sent to the rear.

For Jiang Miao, those few seconds of searching the list were nerve-wracking, and every time the AI called out “Doctor,” her heart would tighten. Fortunately, each time, the AI continued with the news that neither He Yan nor Yan He was on the list.

Fortunately.

But when would the war end?

In one video message she sent to He Yan, Jiang Miao couldn’t help but ask.

After some time, a new video message arrived, and He Yan replied, “No one can predict when the war will end.”

He said, “Jiang Miao…”

Advertisements

He Yan seemed to want to say something, but the words were too difficult, and he couldn’t bring himself to say them.

Jiang Miao could more or less guess.

The war had been going on for over two years. And this war was different from past wars. The upgraded warp engines required eleven months of travel to reach the battlefield—this was an expeditionary war.

The soldiers of the allied forces couldn’t temporarily leave the battlefield for regular leave as they did before. They had to stay there, keeping the flames of war away from human habitats.

The result of the time and distance was that most soldiers’ lovers in Gita had found new partners. Jiang Miao had heard internal reports that those who still regularly received video messages and inquired about the soldiers were mostly people with blood ties.

Either children or guardians.

She wasn’t sure about the situation in Nash.

No one knew when this war would end. The wars between Gita and Nash had intermittently lasted for hundreds of years.

What He Yan likely wanted to say was to ask Jiang Miao not to wait for him anymore.

Rationally speaking, this might be the right thing to do, what was best for Jiang Miao.

But emotionally, it was incredibly difficult for He Yan to tell the woman he loved not to wait for him anymore.

Jiang Miao stared at the screen, seeing the inner conflict and pain in He Yan’s eyes.

Advertisements

But then, Yan He suddenly appeared in the frame.

“Hey, listen to me, Jiang!” Yan He said with a grin, wrapping his arm around He Yan’s neck. “Don’t be foolish and wait for him! Who knows when we’ll be able to return, or if we’ll even make it back! Don’t do anything stupid!”

The atmosphere should have been somber, but He Yan didn’t hesitate to roll up his sleeves and start a fight. The two of them kept disappearing from the frame, only to reappear as one kicked the other from one side of the screen to the other—unexpectedly turning the situation into something comical.

When did they get so close that they could put their arms around each other like that?

In the end, both of them crowded in front of the camera, insisting that Jiang Miao judge whose face looked better at that moment.

One had a swollen cheek and blood at the corner of his mouth; the other had a black eye.

They might as well have been competing over who looked worse.

The two guys said, “Make sure to tell us next time!”

The video ended.

Jiang Miao sighed and rubbed her forehead. “Idiots…” Did they really think she was so fragile that they had to act like clowns to cheer her up?

She smiled wryly.

In the face of a tumultuous interstellar war, everyone was so insignificant. No one could control the course of the war or the direction of history.

The days passed one by one, with the rear sending several batches of reinforcements to the frontlines.

Only a very small number of severe PTSD patients were withdrawn from the frontlines; apart from that, there were no injured soldiers. Except for those who died instantly and couldn’t be saved, almost all external injuries could be treated and healed.

Interstellar warfare was indeed different from the wars of ancient Earth.

But this war wasn’t as long as people had feared.

The year that the 14-years old Jiang Rui received his doctorate, the war that had lasted four years and nine months finally came to an end.

The Beastmen surrendered, and humanity was victorious.

One reason the war dragged on for so long was the sheer number of the Beastmen. Unlike humans, who selected soldiers to fight, the Beastmen waged war as an entire species. Their fleet was so enormous that the word “fleet” doesn’t even fully capture it—there were thousands upon thousands of mobile fortresses alone.

Yet despite their massive fortresses and countless warships, their “vast numbers” couldn’t fill the void.

[It’s said that when they first set out hundreds of years ago, their numbers were much larger than they are now. Well, considering they went to war as an entire species, just think about how many people the human race have now.]**

[The entire journey took hundreds of years, with the intent of propagating several generations along the way. Their lifespans are much shorter than ours. It’s said that genetic modifications started during the age of great exploration, using animals brought from Earth for experiments. Although they achieved bodies stronger than those of the original humans of Earth, they never managed to extend their lifespans. Compared to us, they could be considered short-lived.]

[“The speed of genetic collapse was much faster than they anticipated. By the time they had propagated through five or six generations during their journey, it was already hopeless. Many of them had no consciousness at all—the animal genes had completely overwritten the human genes, resulting in extreme atavism.]

[There was one ship that was a biochemical lab. By the time the allied forces took control of it, it had been out of contact with the other ships for several years. It’s said that even the teams sent by the Beastmen themselves never returned. A biochemical crisis occurred inside, and anyone who still had any semblance of humanity was wiped out. The ship was full of monsters, and even the allied forces suffered heavy losses when they boarded it, ultimately having to destroy the entire ship.”]

[“After the war started, it became difficult for them to find food supplies from nearby planets. It’s said that on some ships, those who had undergone atavism were ‘recycled and reused’ as protein.”]

[“How tragic!”]

With the end of the war, all kinds of information flooded the internet, and the Beastmen once again became a hot topic.

Discussions about genetic modification surged.

[“According to records, our colony’s origin also experimented with fusing animal genes, but the colony at the time established an ethics committee, which ultimately controlled the scope and scale of such experiments, so we didn’t end up going down their path.”]

[“I’ve got some inside info. Apparently, their colony faced extreme conditions, being trapped in a harsh environment for about two hundred years. It was during that time that they crossed ethical boundaries to survive, leading them down this path.”]

[“So, in the end, it was all just to stay alive?”]

[“It does sound pretty sad.”]

[“Sigh, when you think about it, it’s incredible. Twenty colonization teams left Earth back then, heading in twenty different directions. We’re just the descendants of one small group that split off from one of those colonies… What about our other human brothers? What happened to them? Aside from the few messages we received in drifting bottles, how many other human remnants are scattered across the universe, facing situations like the Beastmen and evolving down paths we never imagined?”]

[“Thinking about it makes you realize… everyone is… so small.”]

The war significantly accelerated technological advancements. The warp engine underwent another upgrade during the war years, allowing the expeditionary forces to return in just seven months.

Jiang Miao and Jiang Rui stood in the courtyard, watching as a small military shuttle hovered in the sky.

Time had passed, and Jiang Rui had grown into a handsome young man with refined features. Jiang Miao, just over forty, hadn’t aged a day. The youth of interstellar humans was still in full bloom.

The shuttle didn’t land. A flash of white light, and someone had already teleported into the courtyard.

He was wearing the black uniform of the allied forces. Even though he had left the battlefield, the sharp, blade-like aura surrounding him couldn’t be concealed.

He Yan had returned.

He had come back alone.

The killing intent around He Yan dissipated as soon as he saw the bright, hibiscus-like woman and the handsome young man.

Jiang Miao rushed into He Yan’s arms, and he opened his arms to hold her tightly. His arms were full, and so was his heart.

He then looked up at the young man. In the past, the boy would have been the first to run up, asking to be hugged and lifted high. Now he was taller than Jiang Miao, gently patting his mother’s shoulder, comforting her as she sobbed.

He Yan extended his arm and pulled the young man into the embrace as well. The boy smiled a bit shyly and reached out to hug both his parents.

The three of them held each other tightly.

“So, Yan He…?” Jiang Miao asked once she had calmed down.

Along with the news of the war’s end, the final list of those killed or missing was also sent back. He Yan’s name wasn’t on it, which allowed Jiang Miao to finally breathe a sigh of relief. However, the AI soon informed her that Yan He’s name was on the list of the missing.

According to military protocol, after five years, a missing person is officially declared dead.

He Yan’s return alone had taken seven months.

“No new information…” He Yan said, looking down.

Time had changed many things.

Yan He was no longer just “the man with the annoying face” to He Yan; he had become a dependable comrade. Over the years, they had saved each other countless times on the battlefield.

A flash of pain crossed He Yan’s eyes.

Jiang Miao patted his hand.

Jiang Miao had already left the government’s military research base. Wherever she went, she could set up her own lab. So, when He Yan returned, due to his work, Jiang Miao decided to move with Jiang Rui to Nash.

This time, stepping into Nash felt entirely different from before.

It was Jiang Miao’s first time reuniting with Jude since that year. His gaze was complex, but whatever thoughts he had eventually turned into a look of relief and admiration.

“Jiang, it’s good to see you again,” he said. “The Bardock family sincerely hopes you will become part of the family.”

Jiang Miao and He Yan settled in Nash’s capital planet, where they held a grand wedding.

Their fifteen-year-old son served as the best man for his father. From that day on, the three of them became a legal family, bound by mutual responsibilities, rights, and obligations.

Their life after the wedding was peaceful and happy, and even Jiang Rui started dating.

Jiang Miao was deeply moved. One day, she casually asked He Yan if he wanted to have another child.

But He Yan fell silent.

“What’s wrong?” Jiang Miao asked, puzzled.

He Yan seemed reluctant to speak, but he finally said, “Miao Miao, I was thinking… about Yan He… his…”

He struggled with the words, his gaze uncertain. “…Is it possible?”

Even though he spoke vaguely, Jiang Miao understood.

Yan He’s sperm was stored with her. They had originally planned to find a suitable candidate to carry on his genes after the five-year mark, once Yan He was officially declared dead.

But what He Yan wanted was…

Jiang Miao thought for a moment, then nodded in agreement. “Yes, it’s possible.”

He Yan was overjoyed. He held her hand and said, “I’ll be the one to carry the baby! Let me do it!”

All this time, Jiang Miao had known that something must have happened between He Yan and Yan He, but she never asked. There were too many painful memories from the battlefield, and Jiang Miao didn’t want to reopen He Yan’s wounds.

But this time, He Yan spoke up on his own.

“He was covering our retreat,” he said. “Without him, our entire team probably wouldn’t have survived.”

“He always, always wanted a brilliant child with your genes.”

“It became his obsession.”

“Let’s not wait anymore. Let’s do it now.”

When someone is alive, such an obsession might seem unpleasant, but when that person has made a heroic sacrifice, it becomes something understandable, forgivable, even acceptable.

Jiang Miao agreed to have a child with Yan He. All she needed to do was provide an egg, and He Yan would carry the pregnancy.

The process of reversing the block, retrieving the egg, fertilization, and implantation into an artificial womb was the same as when they had Jiang Rui. The only difference this time was that Yan He’s sperm was used.

The pregnancy went smoothly, and He Yan’s belly grew day by day. Jiang Rui was excited about having a little brother or sister.

The whole family eagerly awaited the arrival of this new life.

In the evening, with the cool breeze blowing, Jiang Miao and He Yan sat on the terrace watching the sunset and the colorful clouds in the sky. When they looked down at He Yan’s growing belly, they couldn’t help but think of Yan He.

When someone passes away, the memories that remain are often of their best qualities.

They remembered Yan He as an excellent soldier, a handsome man, a reliable investment partner, a good friend, a comrade they could trust with their lives… and many more compliments piled on him.

As they reminisced about him, it was both sad and beautiful.

The only problem is, this dead man shouldn’t appear in front of them again!!!

“Why are you still alive?!” He Yan’s face turned green when he saw the living, breathing Yan He again, while sporting a big belly!

“We were comrades! Are you really hoping I’m dead?” Yan He said, enraged.

The two men were about to throw punches right then and there!

Jiang Miao, her head throbbing, couldn’t take it anymore and shouted, “Stop it! One of you is pregnant!”

Yan He was the first to back off, letting out a “hmph” as he glanced at He Yan’s belly, and jealously said, “You’re having another baby!”

He Yan: “…”

He Yan’s face turned ashen. At this moment, he very much wanted Yan He to die once more!

The aroma of tea and coffee filled the air, seeming to clash just like the two men.

“…So I had no choice but to ditch my mech and crawl into an orc escape pod. Who knew their official language was a Russian dialect? My Russian is the weakest of the three languages I know. And their dialect has evolved quite differently from ours—lots of words were incomprehensible, and the grammar had changed too.”

“I fiddled with the controls, thinking I was sending a distress signal, but instead, I triggered the hibernation system and fell asleep. When the cleanup crew found me, the war had been over for nearly ten months.”

That was around the time they had just returned to Nash.

Jiang Miao pinched the bridge of her nose. “Why didn’t we get notified?”

“Oh, that,” Yan He said, sipping his coffee. “I never changed my primary contact from my guardian, and I added you as the second contact. Once they reached my guardian, they didn’t bother contacting the second one.”

“You should’ve told us!” Jiang Miao stared at Yan He.

Yan He chuckled, glancing at He Yan. “I thought, since I ‘died,’ this guy would be upset, so I wanted to surprise him. Who knew you guys had moved when I got back to the capital? I asked Tanaka and found out you were in Nash. Since I’m on leave, I decided to come over for a visit.”

So, instead of rushing, he leisurely traveled, enjoying the scenery and having countless flings along the way, slowly making his way from Gita to Nash to deliver his “surprise.”

The pregnant man, his hormones all over the place, was furious. He leaned back and kicked the coffee table: “Bastard!”

Yan He wasn’t one to back down. He lifted his foot to block the sliding coffee table, which shattered with a loud crash!

“I haven’t liked the look of you since earlier! I survived and came back, and you’re not even happy?” Yan He rolled up his sleeves.

“Sit down!” Jiang Miao, pressing her temple to calm herself, said patiently, “He’s not mad because of that. It’s because…”

“Don’t tell him!” He Yan shouted angrily.

“Huh? What’s going on?” Yan He asked.

It was impossible not to tell him.

So, with a sullen face, He Yan rubbed his belly as Jiang Miao explained everything to Yan He.

Yan He was stunned.

He swallowed, staring at He Yan’s belly with a look of awe. “So, inside there is…”

My kid?

He Yan was carrying a baby—his and Jiang Miao’s baby?

This is unbelievable!

This is what you call a real surprise!!!

Yan He never imagined that after narrowly escaping death, he’d return to find himself a winner in life.

He had medals, a promotion, growing wealth, and now, even a child on the way!

Not only did he get the precious genes he wanted, but he didn’t even have to carry the baby himself—someone else did it for him!

He was winning without lifting a finger!

“How many months along? Has the baby started kicking? Still feeling nauseous?”

“Get lost! Don’t touch my belly!”

“Ah, do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?”

“Get lost! I said don’t touch!!!”

Things were getting lively. Jiang Miao thought to herself, her expression wooden.

Two weeks after Yan He arrived, He Yan gave birth to a girl.

A beautiful, strong baby girl.

“I carried this baby, so I have the right to name her!” He Yan said fiercely to Yan He, “The name’s already picked out, so don’t worry about it.”

“Alright, alright, I won’t argue, but you’ve got to tell me what our daughter’s name is.”

“Yan Yan.”

“Great name!”

“You don’t even know which character it is, and you’re already praising it. Go look it up in a dictionary!”

“No need to look it up. You carried her for ten months, so you wouldn’t give her a bad name.”

“…”

Another round of punches flew back and forth.

These dads are way too violent!

“So, does that mean my little sister has two dads?” Jiang Rui asked.

Although Jiang Rui was still a teenager, he was already a doctoral student at the Nash National Academy of Sciences.

Jiang Miao rubbed her forehead. “Yes.”

“So now we’re a family of five?” The young doctor, who knew everything from astronomy to geography, seemed confused about this.

Jiang Miao’s headache worsened. “No, that’s not quite right…”

Considering the situation, Yan He didn’t take turns on paternity leave like the standard Gita parenting setup. Instead, he applied to take his entire year and a half of leave all at once.

Every day, holding his daughter, he felt an indescribable sense of fulfillment.

However, human nature is greedy. After a period of contentment, Yan He began to develop other ideas.

He had pursued Jiang Miao a long time ago. When he realized Jiang Miao had no interest in him but still wanted to have a child with her, he toned down his advances and presented himself as a sincere parenting partner.

But now that he had gotten what he wanted and was seeing Jiang Miao every day, those old feelings started to resurface.

As for the fact that Jiang Miao was already married to He Yan… Yan He chose to conveniently ignore that.

Marriage? We Gita people don’t get married. What? Marriage has become popular in Gita in recent years? I was busy fighting on the front lines; how was I supposed to know?

After Jiang Miao clearly rejected him several times, Yan He went to He Yan and seriously proposed an idea.

“Let’s the three of us be together,” he said. “That way, everyone’s happy.”

Surprisingly, He Yan didn’t immediately resort to violence. He remained calm, even smiling slightly. “Why don’t you go and tell Jiang Miao that?”

So Yan He really did go to talk to Jiang Miao.

As a high-quality man, it was rare for women to reject him. Jiang Miao’s refusal was simply because He Yan had gotten there first. If He Yan could accept it, wouldn’t the three of them being together be even better?

Yan He’s idea wasn’t exactly wrong or perverse. Threesomes weren’t considered strange in Gita; in fact, they were quite common. Even foursomes and fivesomes weren’t unusual.

After all, Yan He was a born and bred Gita.

Jiang Miao understood his reasoning.

But she still knocked Yan He out with a stun gun and then beat him until his face was swollen like a pig’s head.

As He Yan was gloating, she stunned him too and gave him the same treatment.

The two “pig heads” then got up and started fighting again.

Life was truly like living among gods.

“So what’s the plan? Are you guys settling down here?” Yan He asked, a bit worried. “I can’t take parental leave until Yan Yan is three.”

Just as Yan He was beginning to enjoy the joys of family life, he was even considering quitting and retiring after his leave was up, although he was reluctant to do so.

But then, an unexpected job opportunity came up.

After the war ended, the temporary united government didn’t disband; it became a permanent entity. Now, the united government was recruiting members for a scientific exploration team.

“After you killed Little Fish, no one knew about the things he had hidden away,” He Yan said. “But after Gita cracked the teleportation technology, they used the historical records from the teleportation ring and coordinated with Nash’s anti-piracy units to search each of the coordinates Little Fish had teleported to. They found his safe houses and private stash.”

The work notes of He Yan’s parents and another archaeologist were fully preserved. Using those notes, scholars from the united government also found the ruins of an extinct civilization that Little Fish had discovered.

Among their many discoveries was a star map.

“It’s an unknown star region to us, but back then, it was home to several advanced civilizations. Although distant…” He Yan said, “This scientific exploration plan is scheduled to last twenty years—ten years out, ten years back.”

He Yan’s eyes conveyed his desire to go.

Unknown star regions, unknown civilizations, unknown life forms—these were the things his biological parents had spent their lives trying to explore. As a child, He Yan had sat on his parents’ knees and listened to their dreams countless times.

Even if those unknown advanced civilizations had long since perished, the ruins they left behind were incredibly enticing to Jiang Miao.

“Go,” she said.

“I’m going too,” Yan He added.

With peace now prevailing throughout the human settlements, the life of a peacetime soldier had become too mundane. Yan He preferred exploring the unknown universe to staying in a regular military unit.

This decades-long exploration plan allowed for bringing family or spouses along. The gender ratio of singles had been carefully considered, turning the entire exploration team into a stable, small society.

The team members were allowed to live normal lives during the long journey.

He Yan and Yan He both submitted their applications. Once approved, they each received command of their own ship, becoming the captains of their respective vessels.

Only Yan Yan was considered family, as Jiang Miao was the chief science officer on He Yan’s ship, while Jiang Rui held the same position on Yan He’s ship.

On the day of departure, the newly built scientific exploration ships, representing the pinnacle of human technology, gleamed under the light of the stars. One by one, they stood silent and immense.

Six thousand years ago, humanity fled Earth like lost dogs, plunging into the dark, unknown universe in search of survival, the continuation of their race, and the advancement of their civilization.

Six thousand years later, humanity, confident and composed, advanced deeper into the universe, driven by a desire to encounter higher civilizations.

As the familiar starfields rapidly shrank and grew distant, Jiang Miao stood on the bridge, holding Yan Yan’s chubby little hand, waving goodbye to the past.

Then, she turned, holding Yan Yan, toward the direction they were heading.

“The universe is so vast,” she smiled, “Come on, Daddy, Mommy, and Papa will take you to see it.”

[End of the Main Story]

The side story focuses on Yan He as the main character in a parallel world. If you’re not interested, feel free to skip it. (In the parallel world, there is no “He Yan,” only “Troy.”)

Author’s Note: Final thoughts:

If this hadn’t been written as a sweet story, this setting and plot could have turned out completely differently.

But this is probably the sweetest story I’ve ever written. I finally managed to control myself. ╮(╯▽╰)╭

The side story is about Yan He as the main character, with Troy as a minor character in a parallel world. If that doesn’t interest you, please skip it.

Reminder: If it’s not your cup of tea, don’t read it.

Different people have different tastes, and everyone has their own preferences. Thank you all for your understanding.

Sansukini: Aww… what a sweet ending. I especially like the bromance between He Yan and Yan He and the relationship between 3 people. This author definitely checked all the boxes to make the ending so sweet. So satisfying.

But, this is not really the end. This is the last chapter of the main story, but there are still 6 extra chapters with Yan He’s alternate HE. Yay for #TeamYahHe

  1. Thank you for translating this wonderful story. It was a super interesting ending. I did not expect the five-person family angle xD
