    Chapter 24.3: Clues (3)

Xia Nuo followed the young Kan Chen and watched him walk through the main mansion.

At this time, the owner of the manor had long passed away. Kan Chen, as the sole grandson and heir, reasonably and legally inherited the manor and became its new owner.

The manor having a new owner produced many changes. The most obvious one is that the manor’s servants have been reduced.

When the past owner was still alive, no matter where or when, one would be able to see uniformed servants walking in the manor. But now, only the butler of the past owner was left as well as one cook wearing an apron called ‘Mother He’.

The butler usually acted respectfully towards Kan Chen. Except when reporting about the manor’s affairs, he never said more than one word to him. Other servants would subconsciously avoid Kan Chen’s eyes as if he were some kind of beast.

In this large manor, only this ‘Mother He’ would dare to say a few words of concern to the teenager.

Xia Nuo looked at the thin, straight back of the young Kan Chen, who was walking in front of him. He suddenly felt distressed.

There was  something like an invisible film between him and the young Kan Chen. Though he had never tried, Xia Nuo had a vague guess that even if went up to talk to the young Kan Chen, he wouldn’t be able to find his presence.

As Xia Nuo thought about this, he saw He Lina walking towards the kitchen, and approached ‘Mother He’. She called her ‘Mom’.

So she was Mother He’s daughter. The one born with a cleft lip.

He looked at the mask the girl wore all the time. Hasn’t she had corrective surgery yet?

He clearly remembered He Lina’s beautiful lips. He didn’t even think that she used to have a cleft lip.

By the time he came back to his senses, He Lina had already left the kitchen and bumped head on into Kan Chen, who had just returned to the manor from doing some business talk.

    “…”

The two remained silent and passed by each other as if they were strangers. But Xia Nuo clearly saw that He Lina showed a very sinister and resentful look behind Kan Chen’s back.

    “! ! !”

Xia Nuo immediately had an ominous premonition in his heart. In fact, from the first moment he saw He Lina, this premonition had been constantly ringing an alarm.

He would never forget how He Lina smiled eerily as she lightly said that she wanted to kill evil spirits. Now that he thought about it, she probably said that specifically for Kan Chen.

    What should he do now?

He didn’t want to watch helplessly as Kan Chen gets hurt by He Lina. He needed to find a way to warn him.

Xia Nuo tried all sorts of things. He tried to write something that says ‘Be careful of He Lina’ and put it in front of Kan Chen. He also tried to directly warn him—but none of them worked.

To his relief, He Lina seldom came to the manor. She only came once a month and would always leave in a hurry, not meeting Kan Chen at all.

    Unfortunately, he relaxed too early.

A few days later. One evening, Kan Chen suddenly received a snow-white envelope containing a note that read: If you want to know where Mr. Luo’er is, come to the lake in half an hour.

Xia Nuo also read the note and almost wanted to shout to stop him.

This is clearly a trap! Don’t go!

However, Kan Chen clutched the note and quickly stood up.

Xia Nuo knew that this note had completely grasped Kan Chen’s weakness. He’d always wanted to know his father’s whereabouts, and now, he finally got a clue. Even if it might be a trap, he’d still choose to go.

A deep sense of powerlessness overwhelmed Xia Nuo as he lowered his head. He thought dejectedly, what was the point of coming in this time if he can’t even stop something bad from  happening? Could he only be a dispensable bystander?

Everything went according to how it happened. He watched helplessly as Kan Chen came to the lake. He Lina, who had long planned this before, attacked Kan Chen with a stone. She pushed the unconscious Kan Chen down the lake and let him drown.

Mother He, who usually showed great concern towards Kan Chen, witnessed everything that happened in the woods nearby. Not only did she not stand up to stop her daughter’s evil deeds, but after He Lina left, she salvaged the body and put it in a glass cage used by the previous manor owner to raise cows.

The butler, for whatever reason, chose to remain silent about this after seeing Kan Chen’s mutilated body that he found in a cage the next day. He let the ravens peck at his flesh and blood, and eventually set fire to the remaining bones.

Xia Nuo witnessed all of these happen, as he stood outside of the cage, lost in thought, his heart filled up with indescribable sadness.

Then one day, a fire broke out in the manor and the butler got trapped in it. He wailed and struggled in the fire that didn’t burn him to ashes and instead wrapped his whole body, turning him into the ‘blaze man’.

The ravens in the glass cage flew out at some point and hovered in the sky, making ear-splitting noises above the thick smoke. Their eyes changed from black ink to scarlet red, and their bodies grew several times larger. They gathered together and coalesced into the image of the teenager.

This was where the evil spirit Kan Chen was born.

    Now, everything has become clear.

After his death, Kan Chen still exercised the duties of being the owner of the manor and continued to guard it.

The phrase Mother He wrote in her cookbook, ‘I feel sorry for that child’ actually was referring to Kan Chen.

The ‘Blaze Man’ in the beginning of the book of the Raven Manor House was actually the butler engulfed by flames.

Congratulations to the player for obtaining a special clue—the death of the manor owner.

Congratulations to the player for completing the first part of the special mission—Unraveling the Mystery. Please continue to work hard to free the evil spirits in the manor.

A long black corridor appeared in front of Xia Nuo’s eyes. At the end of this corridor, Kan Chen and Zhang Man heard something and both looked back at the same time.

Then they saw a young man with red eyes running like a bullied, small animal seeking for comfort, and jumping straight—into Kan Chen’s arms.

Zhang Man: …I am unnecessary here.

Seeing this scene, he no longer felt like he needed to worry for this rookie being harmed.

Because as he stood by, he witnessed how the gloomy face of the other man instantly became soft as the young man jumped into his arms.

A steel being refined a hundred times eventually turned into something soft1Used to describe a tough temperament becoming soft. That was what happened.

Kan Chen gently patted the back of the young man in his arms as he comforted him with a warm voice, “What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Who bullied you?”

His attitude and posture showed that he was ready to seek revenge on whoever Xia Nuo mentions.

Kan Chen bombarded Xia Nuo with questions, but the latter shook his head again and again, revealing a pair of red, rabbit eyes, “No one bullied me, I swear…”

Zhang Man stood frozen on the sidelines, feeling that he should say something. As soon as he opened his mouth, he saw something that surprised him and could not stop himself from cursing.

“Oh sh*t, Chang An, is that your kid?!” He pointed at the spot where Xia Nuo had just stood, which should have been empty now. But now there was a small child, with black hair and blue eyes, staring at them.

The author has something to say:

God in the lake: Good child, did you drop the Little Kan Chen, the teenager Kan Chen, or the adult Kan Chen?
