After The Sweet Ending

Chapter 21: Reconciliation

It was a sunny day when Xu Wei returned home, and the hot sunshine made him sweaty. The doctor told him that he suffered from a cold, plus he was fatigued. After two days of staying in the hospital, the doctor told him he could go home.

Xu Wei and Yu Shizhou got home. She wanted to drink water, but before she could even get a sip, his parent’s arrived. They carried a thermos container and they smiled when they saw her. “Wei Wei, where’s Shizhou?”

“He’s in the bath.”

Mother Yu put down the thermos on the table and looked around the room twice before she followed father Yu to sit down on the sofa. Two days ago, she heard they were preparing to get pregnant; she was in awe.

After she returned home, she pulled father Yu and told him about it. She was happy. Mother Yu said to Xu Wei, “Xu Wei, you and Shizhou are quite busy, too. It’s not uncommon that you can’t take care of your body.”

Yu Shizhou came out of the shower as they were talking, and sat next to Xu Wei, listening to his mom. But the more he listened, the more he felt that there was something wrong. “Nowadays, the younger generation lives a busier life than our lives before. Your  cooking can feed yourself at best, but how can you make any tonic soup?”

“I was thinking, I’ve got nothing to do, so I might as well stay with you for a while and give you both a tonic.”

Xu Wei was about to burst out laughing. She really didn’t want to live together with Mother Yu, but someone else would not like it more than her. At the hospital, Yu Shizhou had been moving closer to her, leaning here and there. It was as if he had been holding it in for a long time.  He hadn’t done it in over half a month. She was still frightened about the last time in the car, and she had been very wary of him when she was living outside.

This was rather a helpless statement, and it seemed he really didn’t want mother Yu to go. Yu Shizhou sighed and said, “Mum, you said you wanted to go to Yunnan and visit the countryside. The other day, Wei Wei told me to let you go on vacation. She even booked the tickets, it’s only ten days and not refundable.”

When he went to her office earlier, he saw it at a travel agency when he was passing by. Mother Yu was surprised, and let out an ah! She asked Xu Wei.

Xu Wei glanced at Yu Shizhou suspiciously. “There was a trip to Yunnan, all-inclusive food and accommodation. It’s over two thousand for one person, non-refundable.”

The problem was that she hadn’t bought it, she gave him a veiled glare as Yu Shizhou smiled and took her hand. Then Yu’s mother wavered between taking care of her son and daughter-in-law and going on a trip.

Yu Shizhou said, “Go on, or you’ll waste nearly five thousand yuan.”

Father Yu took a sip of his tea and mentioned, “It’s also the child’s wish. You see, you were envious of Wei Wei going on a trip, now, she arranged it for you.”

Forced into a corner, Xu Wei could do nothing but smile in cooperation. In the end, she cheerfully sent them out of their house, saying that she would send the tickets in a couple of days.

Mother Yu was still doubtful about her decision when she first went out, but after father Yu convinced her all the way, she was finally happy. They talked about what they were going to bring and buy.

They thought about what gifts to bring to the family. When they arrived home, they saw Su Jing waiting by the door. Mother Yu talked about the trip. Su Jing was stunned. “Oh, you and uncle Yu are going to travel. Didn’t you say you would only live here until you died?”

Mother Yu laughed. “Wei Wei thought that we hadn’t traveled for most of our lives, so  she booked a tour for us to go to Yunnan. Five thousand dollars would be a waste if we didn’t go. She even said that when we come back, she’ll get us visas, so she can take us to Europe to experience.”

Su Jing gritted her teeth as she expected mother Yu to have conflict with Xu Wei who was quite well-behaved. She forced a smile and went home.

Wan Lijue leaned against the door and waited for her, his arms wrapped around his chest, rather unhappy. “What are you doing at Yu Shizhou’s house? You’re always running that way these days, my mother says we haven’t been back for days.”

Wan Lijue took Su Jing to live outside under the objection of mother Wan, and his ears were cleared. Su Jing did not like the Wan family, but always liked to go back to her mother’s house. Every time she came back, she would go to the Yu family to visit them.

He also disliked Yu Shizhou now. After Xu Wei married Yu Shizhou, she distanced herself from him, and now she didn’t even contact him anymore. Su Jing showed her concern there which was unpleasant.

Su Jing walked in the door to take off her shoes. Perhaps, the loving phase passed  because of his family’s treatment towards her. It became a lot more difficult for Su Jing to bear.

His family was becoming intolerable for Su Jing. Wan Lijue loved her, but with lesser care and consideration. Mother Wan had always looked down on her and had never let her get away with anything since they got married.

Xu Wei was the daughter of heaven and she knew she was no match for her. If she could, she would have wanted to be born into a rich and powerful family.

While others were desperately trying to become better and better, she could also be like those rich kids, travelling and shopping all over the world.

She had lost at the starting line, and someone would always come to remind her that she wasn’t as good as others. Su Jing’s uncontrollable hostility surged as she hated Xu Wei to the extreme.

Her heart felt tired when she looked at Wan Lijue, and her face showed it. There was some impatience in her eyes, too. “We’re friends. What’s wrong if I go there?”

He frowned, “My aunt and uncle have to go to Shanghai in a few days, would you like to go with them? You can learn a lot, and my aunt is close to my mother, it will be good for you to be close to her.”

Su Jing looked at him in shock, “Do you dislike that I don’t know anything, and I lose your face outside? Why would I want to please your aunt and uncle, it’s always your mother who looks at me badly and finds trouble with me.”

When she had just gotten married, she didn’t have the slightest backbone. She had always put up with it, but did these people think she was easy to bully?

The fact that Su Jing didn’t know anything, and couldn’t fit into his circle of friends and social circle didn’t help his career at all. He gently took her into his arms.

“I’m not saying I despise you, but sometimes, I need your help. There are times I need to go to a party,  and I need you there. Do you think people don’t like you when they look at you?”

She couldn’t learn, originally being a journalist for a publishing house, already took every ounce of effort, so she could do it. There was no way she could help his career.

She didn’t have the power to help him in his career, but Wan Lijue also didn’t expect her to help him. It was that the Wan family was large, and his wife was the face of the family. She should be able to hold her own.

Su Jing coldly pushed him away, “I’m your wife, not your secretary’s. I can’t do what you’re saying. I’m already trying very hard to make way for mum. Do I have to please all your mother’s family before the Wan family has a foothold for me?”

Wan Lijue had a headache and his face darkened. , “My mother has always disliked you not even because of your family. If you could be a generous housewife, she would never say anything.”

“She just dislikes that my family is not good enough for you, so she irritates me at every turn.”

Wan Lijue had no idea of the things his mother had said to taunt her when he wasn’t there, and it was he who couldn’t see clearly.

As soon as Yu Shizhou’s parents were out the door, Yu Shizhou grabbed Xu Wei. He trapped her on the shoe cupboard in the foyer. Then he bowed his head slightly.

There was a stubble on his smooth chin. His breathing was light, and his voice was low as he asked, “What did you say?”

Xu Wei leaned back, swallowed slightly and her eyes darted around. “I didn’t say anything.”

Then, she laughed, “Some people are so scheming, when did I set up a group for the two elders, how come I didn’t know?”

Yu Shizhou’s bony hand gently lifted her chin and smiled softly. “Wei wei, you must not want my mother to live with us.”

She laughed and said back at him, “Why not? Mum is so good at her job, better than you.”

He slowly slid one hand into her shirt and felt a handful of smooth, soft skin. He looked down, his hair sweeping across his ears. She flinched. “My mum’s a light sleeper at night, how bad do you think it would be if she heard something.”
